Rescue Me ID: 16-06-30-00059Missy (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Seriously, how pretty is this girl? This is Missy, a 2 year old Australian Cattledog mix who weighs about 45 pounds. This little smartie is quickly learning manners. She has already mastered sit and no. She is working on more. She is also house trained and knows what to do with a dog door. Missy has learned about the crate. She does well in a crate, though it still takes a bit of coaxing from time to time to get her in it. When she has been let on her own in the house, she hasn't bothered anything. Missy is a friendly girl. She is good with dogs large and small. She loves to play with other dogs and is a dog park superstar. That said, ... (Read More)she should be good in a home with other dogs and is also just fine on her own. She hasn't shown any food possessiveness and seems happy to share. She also seems to leave things alone in the house, not chewing or messing up anything in her foster home. Missy is also people social. She is happy getting to know men and women. She has also played some with older kids, so should be fine with a family with older kids. Missy is learning to fetch. She likes to get the ball and brings it back most of the time. She is a fan of kiddie pools and likes the water hose. She loves water. Missy would like walks and activity. She is good on leash, with just a little tugging. She gets in and out of the car nicely. Missy is really a happy girl. She shows heathy confidence. She will let you know when someone wakes up to the house but is also happy to meet the visitor. When her person comes home, she is extra excited. She oddly greets her people by mouthing their arm, which she does softly. It's a love thing, and no surprise given her Cattledog genetics. Missy has a good time chasing squirrels and birds. We think that a home without cats is likely best. Missy is up to date on her vaccinations, spayed, and microchipped. She is ready for a great home. She is only available to adopters in Southern CA. A home check and vet reference are required. (Less)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Dolly... she is a doll! 'Fantastic dog' was how she was represented by the director of Fresno Human Animal Services, who pretty much just demanded, I 'take this dog'. So far, she is what I was told. She smiles too! Sweet as all get out. She's fine with my dogs, ALL the dogs! Although she was a bit freaked at first. She's had a recent amputation of her front left leg. She came into the shelter with it hanging by a thread. So she was properly vetted at HOPE in Fresno, and brought here as soon as she was up and about. She's doing great. Loving the cool house. Using the dog door, and waiting for her date! She should have a home soon. Maybe ... (Read More)yours?     Dottie is a loving sweetie who is very devoted to her people. She wants to be with them all the time! She is great with kids. Has lived with cats for years (she sometimes likes to chase them playfully). She does get along with other dogs. She would do great with a family who is home a lot and can provide daily exercise. Dottie is a great running buddy! She was recently diagnosed with a condition that will require her to have medication twice daily and otherwise she is the picture of health! *courtesy post*

Rascal has many typical Cattle Dog characteristics. He's not into big crowds and take 10 minutes or so to welcome people to my home. He's obedience trained and respects me and his older border collie brother as his pack leaders. He's learned not to chase chickens and loves the baby lambs. Cats is another story. He has 3 acres to live on and never wanders off. Each night we play ball. He is quick to get it and especially loves catch when I throw it up real high. He's competitive with his brother, but not challenging.

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

We have been fostering Bella, a beautiful and affectionate two-year-old Australian cattle dog mix. She came to us from the San Francisco SPCA who brought her into the city from Stockton. Bella is alternately bored and over-stimulated by the demands of city life. She does better in a suburban environment, but will really thrive on a ranch or farm where she can be free to run and have the responsibility of patrolling a large area to keep its inhabitants safe from harm and gophers. Bella will do well in a home where there are people or animals to watch over. She is very protective and will bark aggressively at perceived threats, though she ... (Read More)has no history of biting. So far she is not good with children, but some work with an experienced trainer could help her get more comfortable around them. She's a very smart dog and she loves a challenge so she is very responsive to training. She plays well with other dogs and is very affectionate and loving with people she trusts. We will miss Bella terribly, but will love to see her thriving in a safe place where she can have a job and get the exercise she needs. Bella is spayed, house-broken, trained on the basics, microchipped, and up-to-date on all shots including optional leptospirosis. $150 rehoming fee includes: Collar, Leash, and no-pull harness Heartgard and Nexgard for next 4 months Food and treats Her bed and a few of her favorite toys (Less)

Ryan is a very loving, loyal, and intelligent companion. She gets along well with my other two smaller dogs as long as food is not involved. Unfortunately, I am an older single woman, and according to my vet, not a good alpha. Ryan has been trained and she obeys the female trainer and my ex-husband, but will not comply with my commands if she thinks I may be in danger or there is a critter that needs catching. Because I am unable to control her and my ex-husbands new wife does not want her, I feel that she would be better off in a home with a strong female or male in charge. Rescue Me ID: 16-06-14-00162Jack and Ernie (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

These two boys are devoted friends. For this reason we want to adopt them to a home that will welcome them together. Jack is a 6-7 year old Australian Cattle Dog. He's very shy at first but once he's comfortable he is very friendly and loyal and loving. Wherever you are you will find him as your shadow. He's housebroken and gets along well with other dogs once he's warmed up to them. He tends to do better with little dogs and dogs close to his size. He's never met a treat he didn't like and is very eager to learn and makes great eye contact when being talked to. He's not a big fan of balls or squeaky toys but he does like stuffing free ... (Read More)animals. He's a very sweet dog who is happiest being by your side. His absolute favorite thing to do is lay on the ground then flip over and rub his back while kicking his legs in the air. He loves children and if he feels there is something wrong he checks up on them and gives kisses to make them feel better. Jack will panic a little if you tug on his collar. I'm not sure what happened to him but I can assume someone yanked on it too rough and he does get a little scared if you grab his collar and will sit down and shake his head hard to get you to let go. For this reason he is walked on a harness. He walks great and when you stop walking he sits at your side. Jack did well at the groomers while getting his bath and nails clipped. And Ernie is Jacks' buddy. Ernie is roughly 5 years old and believed to be a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix but I would say he leans heavily towards the Chihuahua side. He has never met a toy that he doesn't like and could spend all day playing ball. He is just a very happy-go-lucky kind of dog. He's very friendly and he loves his friend Jack. Ernie is not a fan of tile floors but is slowly warming up to them so don't be alarmed if he refuses to walk on tile or hardwoods at first. Ernie does well getting his nails clipped but the quick is very long on his nails so his nails tend to always look a little longer than other dogs. He loves children as well and if allowed he will spend most of his time with kids either playing with them or laying on their bed with them. He loves to be petted and will jump into your lap but occasionally will try to jump up and kiss you. He thinks hands are toys and does tend to get a little playful nippy but responds well to verbal correction. Ernie loves playing with his foster sister who is a German Shepherd Husky mix. He holds his own quite well. Both dogs are crate trained and eat in their kennels otherwise Jack will eat Ernie's food. They would do best in a home without cats.     Born 2-11-2014. She knows sit, laydown, crouch and loves playing fetch with her racquetball. She has one blue eye and a naturally docked tail. Needs a yard. Parting with her breaks my heart, but she needs a home with more active owners. She currently lives with elderly and disabled persons. She is too protective of me and won't allow people to come near when I fall out of my wheelchair. I'm not asking for a fee because a good home is first priority, but I have spend a small fortune on her and any donation would be appreciated.

Small white with brown spots Queensland Healer mix about 5yrs old. On Saturday June 4TH Buster lost his owner which was my sons father. Buster is confused and scared. We thought taking Buster in would be easy, but it was not. He has escaped from the pin 3 times. He has been being aggressive and we have no places for him to run. We are hoping to find someone how can handle Buster. We don't want him to end up at pound and destroyed. I believe in the right conditions he will be very happy.

Say 'hi' to Ted... quietly, he nervous! Ted has been here a while now, but oh, the progress! Looking normal much of the time now. Follows you everywhere off leash. Routine oriented. He's blowing me away. Longest I have ever had a foster, but the things he's taught me are invaluable! He's about 2, Queensland / Catahoula combo. Beautiful guy, one blue eye. Ted came here with his sister/mother, who knows, Tessa from the small Orange Cove Shelter, in July 2014. Sometimes I wish I knew a dog's story. How could they be SO shut down?! Ted was one of those dogs. He's fearful and under socialized. Been working with him, and experience has proven ... (Read More)that they are all reachable. The kind of progress I'm grateful for, he now instigates play with dogs, loves sleeping on a dog bed inside and knows how to navigate the dog door, and is housebroken. He's not terrified of me anymore! Eats grass on walks... walks on a leash. I can pet him... I'm tellin' ya, it's the little things that are enormous with some of these guys! Now when we walk, Ted is so close he bumps into the back of my legs, and I feel his breath on the back of my hand... Ted just needs a special adopter, one who might understand Ted is special. He could just be left alone to exist, but I would love to see him with someone that would touch him every day, take him on walks, expose him to things. This is when I've seen the most improvements. Exposure to everything! Immersion. Was a huge deal to even force him to sleep in a dog bed next to me! Once he did for a few days, he expected it! Routine is key! Dogs are incredible, you can reach them through routine. Still working and he has all the time he needs... She has been known to carry a toy with her around the house, holding it in her mouth as she walks along. Minnie Pearl currently lives with other dogs and likes them. Like all ladies, she ... (Read More)simply prefers a polite introduction upon meeting. With a few dogs, she will even play. A submissive or neutral dog would be a lovely companion for her. Miss Minnie Pearl is a very polite girl. She knows sit, wait, and off. She also walks nicely on a leash and rides politely in the car. She is ready for a person who wants to go places and take her along. Minnis is a sponge when it comes to learning. She is very interested in learning and would really blossom with additional training or even someone who wants to take her to flyball or agility. Minnie really focuses on her person. She is ready to make a deep bond and be someone's very best pal. That said, with her activity level, Minnie is not a fit for a home with kids under junior high age. Minnie is a lovely house pal. She is house trained and, if you ask, will go into her crate where she remains quietly until it is time to get out. Minnie Pearl is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. She is being fostered in the Inland Empire. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to local rescues. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Thanks Nancy, Derek, and Pilots n Paws, for getting Rowan to a safe place! Rowan isabout 1 1/2 years old. A neutered Mcnab. Rowan was not doing well in the Ukiah shelter, he's sensitive and was shutting down in the kennel environment. Since he got here, he began decompressing immediately. The other dogs are helping for sure. He is absolutely appropriate with other dogs, and the shyness will fall away after he has a little time to relax. what a difference 24 hours has already made! Rowan is like a feather on a leash. I don't want to drag him around, but if I just clip a leash on, I can barely tell he's there, he is so easy. Flew here ... (Read More)like a champ too. He was tethered not crated and then rode in the car back to the house, and he does great.     Meet Sadie and Woofers, who, sadly, were brought to the shelter after their beloved owner was placed in hospice care. They are now looking for a new home to park their dog beds and live out their golden years. Sadie is a lovely Australian Shepherd mix about 8 years old, and Woofers is a handsome Queensland Heeler about 10 years old. They are very bonded and look out for each other. Both are easygoing, housetrained, cratetrained, not destructive, and are very affectionate, they love hugs and kisses. They are still quite active but mellow. When they first arrived at their foster home they were a bit overweight, but have now slimmed down and ... (Read More)really love going for walks and car rides. They've also both tested well with other dogs, but are over their rough and tumble days so would prefer to spend their time with other low-key, friendly dogs like themselves.     Rain 'found' us Aug. '15. For a week, whenever she caught sight of us she'd run and hide. She came to trust us, wag her tail, and gained a good amount of weight. She initially blended into our 'pack' of a male Boxer and a female Pitt mix while we looked for her owner(s). We made mistakes -- being naive about the attention needs and energy levels of not only her breed (we're going by 'looks' for breed) but of our two 'home dogs'. We did not 'drain' Rain's energy sufficiently to maintain balance in the 'pack'. Rain and the Pitt mix can not be alone with one another as they have fought. She does well with the Boxer. It's unclear if it's ... (Read More)because of being male or because of his non-alpha temperament. She has also played well with a male lab on a few occasions. We know she has growled and snarled at visitors, but it's also unclear if that comes from insecurity or from some negative experience she's had. Bottom line: We're sorry we can not keep her. If we didn't have two 'high energy' dogs, or just the Boxer, we DEFINITELY would keep Rain. We want her to find a safe, caring, balanced 'pack leader' who understands (better than we did) the need for exercise for her breed. Rain needs 'a job'. Our 'pack' needs stability returned. She rides EXTREMELY well in the cars. She tethers well when needed. Walks fairly well on lead. Comes when called better than any other dog we've had. She is SWEET and BRIGHT. Rain is a great little dog. (Less)

This little character is Fin, a 4 year old Australian Cattledog mix. At 22 pounds, he is a small guy with mass amounts of personality! Fin has learned a lot of house manners. He is house and crate trained. He knows sit and 'to your bed' when it's time for the crate. He is wonderful in the car and on leash. He learns so fast that he may have learned something new by the time you are reading this. He also LOVES his blankeys! He loves to bury himself in his blankets and pillows. He's also a goof - very wiggly and snuggly and affectionate once he gets to know you. Fin enjoys casual hikes or long strolls through the neighborhood. Once he gets to ... (Read More)know his person, he is even good off leash on a hike. Fin is a big guy in a small package. He needs a home where his people aren't pushovers. If he gets an inch, he will take a mile. Therefore, he is looking for a home that understands that some dogs feel best when they have a lot of structure. He also is looking for a home where he is a buddy rather than a teddy bear. He will do best hanging out with his person but not being cuddled and coddled. A home without kids is required. He lives with other animals and gets along well. Just like with people, he does best when his animal friends aren't pushovers. In order to help Fin be the best he can be, he has been enrolled in professional training where his obedience skills have been refined. He has received additional socialization with dogs and people, too. He will always be a one or two person kind of dog rather than the super social, love everyone kind of guy. If you want devoted, he is definitely that. HIs foster mom says that he has a way of becoming a part of your heart, so even with his need for structure, he is well worth it. He will come with a few sessions of training with his new person and current trainer so that his transition to a new home is smooth and effective. The training is included in his adoption fee. Fin is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to local rescues. PIease Read Before Adopting an Australian Cattle Dog in California
Australian Cattle Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. The Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most intelligent dog breeds, needing a lot of attention to stave off boredom. A neglected Australian Cattle Dog can become destructive. Australian Cattle Dogs have strong herding instincts and behave best when they have plenty of space and a job to do. Australian Cattle Dogs are well suited to farms and homes with large yards; they do not do well confined to an apartment or other small space. Australian Cattle Dogs are loyal and very obedient with attentive training. An Australian Cattle Dog tends not to do well with children unless it has known them since it was a puppy. Australian Cattle Dogs may be very close to their masters and reluctant to accept other people.

lnteresting Australian Cattle Dog Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Cattle Dogs were bred by 19th century Australian pioneers to herd cattle on large ranches. Most Australian Cattle Dogs have a star-shaped marking on their foreheads called the Bentley Mark, after dog owner Thomas Bentley, whose purebred dog supposedly passed this mark on to all genuine Australian Cattle Dogs. Australian Cattle Dogs are excellent at catching frisbees. The Australian Cattle Dog nips at a cow's heels to keep it in line with the herd, and may apply this technique to its humans from time to time as well.
