Rescue Me ID: 15-07-04-00011Denga (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed

Denga is Portuguese slang for young woman with many desires. She is obedient, watchful and calm. She got along well with my miniature dachshund. She belongs to a neighbor who inherited her from her late brother. Mary wants to go back home to Brazil, but to her, her brother's dog is like his child and so she wants to find a good home for her. Denga does have a habit of sort of nibbling the edge of furniture, but I couldn't find any damage. (A couch cover does its job.) (Mary doesn't have a computer, so I am relaying messages to her.)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Bea is an amazing dog. She loves chasing balls and running in fields. She is a great little explorer. She is wicked smart and has basic training. She has shown some food aggression, mostly towards other dogs; for this reason I think she'd be best suited to a single dog household. She loves people and is very well socialized. I love this dog but she does not get along with a rescue I took on. She could also use more space and stimulation than what I can offer. Please let me know if you have any questions about her!

Rescue Me ID: 15-07-01-00617Sheila (female)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Very High Energy
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis, Fearful/Anxious

Sheila has been with us since she was about 12 weeks old. After adopting her and getting her used to us, she revealed herself as very nervous and high-strung. At first, she would show submissive behavior all the time, even to cats. She is still submissive to certain new adults she meets and to larger, confident dogs. But, she is aggressive towards submissive (especially smaller) dogs. She had surgery a few years ago to correct a coronoid process in her right elbow. She has arthritis still, but it doesn't bother her unless she is allowed to play rough with other dogs for long periods. She is fine with running and has a strong chase instinct. ... (Read More) We recommend that she not be trusted with children as she doesn't like to be hugged and gets nervous with a lot of commotion. She would do best with a strong, male master who can be with her most of the time and can show her who is boss. She would do well on a ranch or a big property but would need to get used to being around horses and livestock. (Less)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Needs Vaccinations, Deaf

This is a pup we call 'Riley' and she's looking for the right rescue or individual to find/give her a loving home. She was in a grocery store parking lot headed straight for a busy intersection before she was rescued by a good samaritan. She was dehydrated, half starved, full of worms and covered in fleas. She was vetted and after some meds, has been pronounced healthy by our vet -we have a health certificate. I've had 2 vets say that she is a heeler mix. She will likely be a 'small sized' medium dog. Right now, she is mostly legs and ears, though she's almost grown into her paws. She is approximately 4 months old and is mostly housebroken ... (Read More)and crate trained. She is deaf and needs to be with a rescue or individual who knows how to work with non hearing dogs. She has done very well with our 5 dogs, large and small, and is desperate to play with our kitties, they are not so keen. She is intelligent, playful, very fond of people and loves to snuggle. She has had one vaccination and has already been microchipped. Riley is located in Visalia in the Central Valley. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-06-26-00556Cinder (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Except for the floppy ears, Cinder looks to be a pure Australian cattle dog (heeler). She weighs 30-35 lbs. and is about 1-year old. Cinder is an extremely sweet, loving dog, who wants to please her people. She is very much a velcro dog and will follow her chosen person wherever she can. She loves to give kisses and cuddle on the sofa. For a young cattle dog, Cinder is moderate energy. She loves toys and will carry them around the house and yard with her. Cinder likes to play fetch and run around the yard, leaping over bushes and planters in her path. Cinder can be very playful and energetic, but for a young girl she is also very calm and ... (Read More)likes to lounge around the house. Cinder is a very smart girl; she knows sit, down, drop it, and is continuing to learn. She is completely housebroken and will let you know if she really needs to go outside. She rides quietly in the back of the car (not crated). Cinder also walks fairly well on leash, but is very cautious on walks, especially if on a busy street/sidewalk. A loud noise or a scary stranger approaching quickly can cause her to panic. She does best when running with and focusing on her person. Cinder is good with calm dogs who respect her space and are not too forward. She will play with another dog once she feels comfortable. If another dog tries to keep at her, when she wants to stop interacting, Cinder can get grumpy and communicate that she wants to be left alone. She has reacted defensively when meeting dogs who are extremely busy, approach her quickly, and are in her face. We have not seen her with cats, but feel she may be fine with them - as she is with anyone who is not a threat to her. For a young dog who is still just a pup, Cinder was found on her own, as a stray. This could be the reason for her nagging worries about her safety, especially in unfamiliar surroundings or when meeting a new person. If strangers approach too quickly to greet her or startle her, Cinder may retreat, while growling, and may air snap if she feels cornered. She is quicker to warm up to people who are calm and, at first, don't focus on her, allowing her to approach at her own pace. For this reason, we do not recommend Cinder for a home with small children. When her people leave her alone, she will whimper softly but, only for a few minutes. Cinder is getting better at being left alone, and is NOT destructive in any way when alone. In her foster home she is beginning to learn that she is not being abandoned each time someone leaves. She often will sit by the window, watching for her person to return. Cinder needs a quiet, calm home, with loving and patient forever companion(s) who will stay dedicated to working with her and show her the world is not so scary. Once she trusts someone, she will open up into a very playful, happy and loving pup, who is very enthusiastic about giving kisses. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 15-06-26-00276Zero (male)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Zero is a 5 year old, male, blue merle Australian Cattle Dog. He weighs about 45lbs, has all of his vaccinations, is neutered and is not on any medications or had any health issues. I have had him since he was 8 months old, and have loved him the entire time. Unfortunately my current (and future) living situation makes it no longer possible to give him the life that he deserves. I am looking for a good home for him so that he can be happy again. Zero is submissive and shy/timid, and sticks to whoever he knows when he meets new people. He will bark or hide when he is scared, and if he is particularly frightened he might pee himself a tiny ... (Read More)amount. Zero is not aggressive, and in typical cattle dog fashion prefers to be left alone when meeting new people/strangers until he is comfortable. He has never consistently been around children, but when he is, he treats them like adults. Zero is cautious when meeting new dogs because he was attacked by a dog once when he was a puppy, and prefers calmer dogs. Zero has never been food aggressive. He can get annoyed and bark at strange dogs if they take his Frisbee when he is playing Frisbee. However, with dogs he knows, he is fine sharing and playing with them. Zero grew up with a cat when he was a puppy and loves to play with them. However, cats do not always like his enthusiasm for playing. Zero loves being around people he knows, and can whine/whimper if left alone. However this usually only occurs when he's left in a new or unfamiliar place, and usually subsides after a day or so. He is housebroken, and can go about 12 hours without needing to be let out before he gets really anxious. Zero needs exercise each day, even if it's just a couple of walks. He would prefer to be worn out by doing an activity (running, Frisbee, etc), but he is content with playing inside and walks. He is pretty calm on the leash, he mainly likes to sniff and watch things. Zero loves going on car rides, and has done 2 cross country (CA-)NY) trips with me. Zero barks when he is scared, when he meets somebody new, or if something is wrong (his toy is stuck, etc). He is not crate trained, has never been around livestock, and has never used a doggy door. If left for too long without anybody around Zero will sometimes get bored, but he hasn't destructively chewed anything since he was a puppy. He is content with a bone or a chew toy. He does like to tear apart soft chew toys and rope. Zero is very smart, and if not accustomed to where he is, he will try very hard to reach his people. Once I caught him trying to jiggle the door handle between his paws. Zero will only mouth when he gets instigated (like somebody pinching him repeatedly), and even then he just carefully places his mouth over your hand, but even that is rare. If he does accidently nip during play, he immediately stops and tries to lick where he nipped. He does like to try and bite the broom/mop/vacuum. He grew up being allowed on furniture, but in the past year has been learning to wait before coming onto furniture. He does have a dog bed that he likes to sleep on. Zero knows: Sit, Stay, Wait, Down, Off, Out, Go to bed, Beg, Paw, Dance, Hugs, Kisses, Come (when his name is called). He is a very smart dog and can learn commands pretty easily. He absolutely loves playing Frisbee and wearing a bandana and loves getting attention. Zero also enjoys observing and watching things. He does not like baths and will try to hide when he hears the bath come on, but he tolerates them when they come on. Zero also hates being tangled in wires and will very carefully walk through anything that he thinks will get him entangled. He has never had any health issues, is micro chipped, and neutered. I've been mainly trying to work on building up his confidence, as I think that will help with his anxiety when meeting new people and being left alone. If you are interested in meeting Zero or have any questions, please contact Matt Herzog at 707-386-9496 or e-mail him at mattrherzog@gmail.com. (Less)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Dan, or Danny Boy, is one solid, handsome Australian Cattle Dog. 5 years old, 45 pounds, he is still young enough to keep up with you but beyond the silly stage that young heelers go through. In short, he is the perfect age. Rescued from a high kill shelter where he was found as a stray, Dan isn't telling us his history. From there, he was adopted and living a great life until his person unfortunately started to lose the battle with cancer. Now, he needs a new home. Danny is a gentle soul who slowly scoots closer to you so that he can cuddle. He really wants to be close to his person and get plenty of petting. He was even an angel with the ... (Read More)vet. Danny walks nicely on a leash and rides politely in a car. He sits politely when asked. Dan takes treats gently and has shown no food aggression. He also lives with a male and female foster sibling, so we assume he is good with most dogs. Squeaky toys and soft beds are favorites for Dan.He also noses you for attention. Apparently he can't get enough. Danny is soft and takes corrections simply with tone of voice. He is looking for someone who will adore him. Danny is crate trained and is potty trained. Danny is ready for a forever home. He is microchipped, neutered, and fully vaccinated. A vet reference and home visit are required as part of the adoption process. (Less)

Could this be your Buddy? He hopes so since he is very dedicated to his person. Unfortunately, his person is losing a battle with cancer and, despite hating to lose him, knows that it's best for him to find a new home. Buddy is a four year old blue Australian Cattle Dog with some charming brown accents and a fantastic Cattledog tail. He is on the smaller size, between 35-40 pounds. He adores people, even children. Buddy is also good with other dogs. Currently he is living with other dogs and puppies. He takes advantage of that by playing as much as possible. Buddy is a polite family member. He is house trained and loves to sleep in his ... (Read More)person's bed, though he can sleep on a soft dog bed next to his person, if that is preferred. He knows sit and down. He walks nicely on a leash and rides politely in the car. He really likes to ride shotgun and be your best pal. It's just that he would like to take even more walks and car rides. Where he lives now, he doesn't get out much. Buddy also knows to sit while you serve his meal. He will wait until you say okay before he begins to eat. You can even reach your hand to his food as he isn't food aggressive. He also knows the command 'no jump' so that you can remind him should be be excited to see you and happen to jump up. In general, he restrains himself. Buddy adores belly rubs. When you reach to pet him, he will roll over onto his back, making sure that you can give his belly plenty of rubs. He is also good being brushed. Buddy adores toys. He loves squeaky toys and stuffed animals. He almost always has one in his mouth. He'd rather play with a toy than chew on your things. He also likes to fetch with you. If you ask 'where's your toy?' he will bring it and set it in your lap so that you will play with him. Buddy is in good health and has all of his shots. He has two years of vet records that come with him. Buddy is being fostered in Southern California and is ready for adoption to a home in the area. A home visit and vet reference are required.     Layla was found as a stray by our friends at Hope For Paws. She was then brought to us so we could help her adjust with the changes from being on the streets to being part of a family. She is amazing! So smart, attentive, great with other dogs, loving with humans (a bit shy with men still but she warms up fast given the opportunity). NO CATS. Hasn't hurt any cats but she's too interested. She knows sit, down and rollover. She was obviously trained at some point. House trained, crate trained and no food or toy aggression. Approximately 35 lbs.

We sort of inherited this dog over a year ago. I like him better than any animal I have ever met, however he severely attacked my sister-in-law's leg and is now in Agoura animal shelter as of May 30th. Both dogs were running excitedly through the house at the arrival of company, my sister-in-law put her granddaughter on the other side of child gate to protect her from getting knocked down and Doc attacked as she was stepping over the gate herself. (He may have been possessive of the child with whom he has played in the past) I should have tried to find him a better suited home from the get-go, one where he can run, run, run

Roan is a red heeler/Australian cattle dog who was adopted from Cosumnes River Community College's vet school 4 years ago. He lived an institutional life there. He is quiet, calm, and a little shy, but reactive towards other dogs. He loves to be petted and to sit next to you on the sofa. Roan is good with all people, children, and cats. He is a very intelligent, food-motivated, and trainable boy who wants nothing more than to please his people. He needs a long walk daily and is not interested in fetching or toys. He would rather relax with his people. Roan enjoys car rides and gets very excited when first starting out, but then quiets ... (Read More)down. He has no food aggression, is housebroken, and can be left alone. Roan is a great watchdog - he is very alert and has excellent hearing. He will bark to alert his people when he hears someone outside. Roan walks nicely on a leash, but needs continued training learning not to lunge and bark at other dogs. A trainer has been working with Roan to overcome this using clicker training, redirection, and distance. He would do best as an only dog or with a female dog smaller than him. Roan is up-to-date on all vaccinations and neutered. He is located in the Sacramento area. If you are interested in meeting Roan, please contact Marta at fernsibal@gmail.com. (Less)

W have a beautiful dog, who has been in our lives for 5 years. Having recently lost our dog of 15.5 years, we adopted Cali from the SPCA as she charmed us with her exuberance and interaction. And she was beautiful - a cross between a cattle dog and a corgi, long legs, alert eyes and ears, bushy tail and a spotted red and white coat. She made friends with the neighbor dogs - there is even a video on youtube of her playing tether ball with her friend Poppy. She had a yard to play in, a 'puppy empowerment portal' (doggie door) to get there, trails to hike nearby and clean streets to walk on leash. We have divorced - very amicably - and ... (Read More)have just sold our house and will be moving out in May. We had a friend who had just lost his dog and he graciously took Cali in while we prepped the house. And he fell in love with her. But he lives in the city - in a not so clean section of Oakland. Now, when Cali walks, she is fixated on finding scraps of food on the route. Nearby parks are littered with chicken bones, so rather than playing, she spends her time hunting bones. His house has a studio downstairs where people often come to play music. Her protective nature gets the better of her and she has to spend a lot of time upstairs, cut off from the action downstairs. My ex and I will also be moving to the city. The three of us have done a lot of soul searching and have come to the conclusion that we cannot keep Cali. It is simply not fair to her. She deserves to be in an area where she can run and play and not be distracted by junk on the sidewalk or in the park grass. She is too smart and energetic to be kept cooped up. Cali's good traits: She is beautiful. Folks always say she looks like a fox. She is loyal. She loves the people she knows and follows us all around. She is good on trails and doesn't run off. She is good with other dogs at the beach, on trails, at doggy day care when she goes. She is SMART! One can actually see the wheels turn in her head. She learns tricks in about 30 minutes. She had an opportunity to try out an agility course and mastered 3 activities in an hour! The trainer was impressed. She is active. She loves hiking, the beach, playing ball, and playing tetherball. She LOVES being chased with a toy in her mouth, by dogs or by people. She is protective of her peeps and her territory (the house, yard and car). She is incredibly exuberant when you come home and loves to lick you. No dog is perfect and Cali is no exception. Her protective nature can get the best of her. Once she becomes used to a place (3-6 months), she believes it is her job to protect it from visitors and other dogs. Once she becomes used to someone - usually because they work with her by feeding her and walking her - they are welcomed into the pack. A home with constant coming and going of people for rehearsal is not for her. She gets along well with other dogs on neutral territory and on their turf. She doesn't like them inside her home, although she has friends she doesn't mind hanging with in her yard. She is SUPER SMART! She learns things quickly. With that smartness comes a bit of wllfulness and mischievousness - but that happens when she is bored. When she is bored, she plays games to alleviate that boredom - such as learning how to open trash cans and spilling the contents on the kitchen floor. Or opening the tall cabinet and removing key food items: loaves of bread, a bag of flour, a box of rice. Sometimes she eats these, other times, she just moves them to other areas so that you know she was there. Cali needs a real job. She needs space to be active. She needs to be mentally challenged. She wants nothing more than to please and can be such a very loving dog. She needs an assertive pack, as she is most at ease when there is structure. We are looking for the right person or persons and the right environment for her (Less)

Housebroken, non-chewer and bed sleeper... oops). Needs/wants to work outside during the day! He had one chicken issue - not sure if he would repeat offense :( Been to several dog parks - no issues. When we travel he protects me/car!! Trained, smart.

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Needs Vaccinations

Josie in Napa is an adorable 5 year old Black Beauty Cattle Dog girl. She is a very sweet and loving dog who is active. She has silky shiny black hair. She is medium size about 50 lbs. Josie loves running and we didn't have her herding sheep but we know she has the skills with the right owner to teach her, she always tried to herd our other dog a Shepard mix, it was so funny, she did great pushing him around and trying to put him in certain area. Josie loves people, but small hyper children make her anxious and you have to keep an eye on her. She is super sweet with our 9 yr. old, fetch the ball and gives many kisses. She doesn't like cats ... (Read More)or is house trained. She is ok with some dogs, others not, all depends. We never tried to walk her in areas with many dogs interaction, so we don't know how she is going to react. She has had beginner manner training in Ramona (Beckman's dog training) she had many sessions and she learned how to walk in a leash with the gentle leader. We used to have 5 acres surrounded by land, no neighbors or roads like in the small house that we moved to, she seems sad. She would do great with someone who loves training and teaching and has an area for her to run and play freely, best a ranch with people who knows how to train cattle dogs to herd. Please farmer consider making Josie a part of your family! Josie is spayed and healthy, might need some vaccines. (Less)

Currently Bella lives outside most of the time. However, she is ready to join you in the house and be your best pal. She is house trained already. True to her breed, Bella is a smart girl. Currently Bella pulls a bit on leash. Perhaps that is because she is looking for an active home that will help her burn off some of that cattledog energy. She has been polite at the dog beach, though she does like a proper introduction as is typical of the breed.     Say 'hi' to Ted... quietly, he's nervous! Ted came here with his sister/mother, who knows, Tessa from the small Orange Cove Shelter. Sometimes you wish you knew a dog's story. How could they be SO messed up?! Ted is one of those dogs. He's fearful and under socialized. Been working with him, and experience has proven that they are all reachable. The kind of progress I'm grateful for, he sniffs other dogs, comes in to sleep on a dog bed of his own volition, housebroken, not terrified of me anymore, eats grass on walks... walks on a leash. I can touch him... I'm tellin' ya, it's the little things that are enormous with some of these guys! ... (Read More) Ted needs a special adopter, one who might understand what Ted is going through. He could just be left alone to exist, but I would love to see him with someone that would touch him every day, take him on walks, expose him to things. This is when I've seen the most improvements. Exposure to everything! Immersion. Was a huge deal to even force him to sleep in a dog bed next to me! Once he did for a few days, he expected it! Routine is key! Dogs are incredible, you can reach them through routine. Still working and he has all the time he needs... He's completely house trained, knows how to use he doggie door, and walks nicely on a leash. He's neutered, current on vaccinations and microchipped. His family has moved, and can no longer keep him. We didn't want Deuce to end up in the shelter, so we said we would find him a new home. We're boarding Deuce at the vets office until we can find a foster or permanent home. He'd love a home with a yard to run and play! Deuce is a big happy goofball that ... (Read More)would make a great addition to the right home! He loves to play with his toys, or have you throw the ball for him. Deuce would be best as an only dog. Sadly, Deuce had a very rough start in life. When he was just a puppy, some cruel person kicked him in the head, and then dumped him at a high kill shelter. Deuce has an adorable tilt to his head because of that injury, and specialists say there's nothing that can be done. Deuce really deserves a wonderful family of his own! He'll repay you with lots of love and devotion! If you'd like to meet Deuce, please call 310-283-8947 or complete our online adoption application found on dexterfoundation.com If you can't adopt Deuce, can you at least foster him temporarily? Living in a cage at the vet's office is not a good place to be :( We're only adopting out to the Southern California area. (Less)

lnteresting Australian Cattle Dog Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Cattle Dogs were bred by 19th century Australian pioneers to herd cattle on large ranches. Most Australian Cattle Dogs have a star-shaped marking on their foreheads called the Bentley Mark, after dog owner Thomas Bentley, whose purebred dog supposedly passed this mark on to all genuine Australian Cattle Dogs.
