He's been sitting in the shelter in San Bernardino, since end of November. His photos were horrid, and it didn't look like he was getting any attention. So I asked for help (thank you Helping Herders), and here he is. He is so not scary! He's Briggs! He met my pack without incident, without so much as one raised hackle. It was perfect. And Briggs is beautiful! Not much time to get to know him well, but so far, sweet as can be. He's about 3, and has what I believe is a naturally stumpy tail, about 8 inches long, but, could be 6. Girls can't measure. Lots more to come on this boy! Stay tuned! Photos updated at: ...     Betty turned two in November. She is a quick learner and loves to play fetch. When ever she sees me she runs to get a ball and drops it at my feet. If I don't pick it up right away she will nudge it then nudge me. She knows sit, lay down, place and come. Is working on stay. loves her stomach rubbed. Walks well on leash and loves to go for rides in the car. I have been taking her to dog training classes. She loves agility course. But she is overly protective of me and I have to have her kenneled if grand kids or other people are around She will bite their heels. She really needs a job, other than the one in her head of guarding me from the ... (Read More)world. She has bitten my mom and sister on the heels. I need to have surgery on both of my leggs. Preferably on a ranch with cattle and or horses. She wants to please and loves to show off her smarts. She is a quick learner. (Less)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

8yrs old. 55lbs. Very sweet, obedient girl. Ruby aims to please. Knows sit, stay, shake, drop it. Down means roll over on your back (and please rub my stomach and chest). Ha! She plays fetch like a champ, LOVES squeaky toys and car rides. LOVES being pet. She will come over for pets and if you stop, she'll nudge you to keep going. She also loves butt scratches and if you aren't giving enough, she will back up into you and move her butt up and down. It's hilarious. She loves the outdoors as well. I just let her do her thing and she won't wander off and will come right back if called. She will roll around on her back in the dirt and bask in ... (Read More)the sun or do a little investigating around the perimeter of the house. Shows signs of protectiveness. Not sure how far she will go with it. Seems to be more bark than bite. But she doesn't like it too much if we give affection to other dogs in her presence. In a lot of cases she will come over and try to assert herself into the mix. However, a firm 'no' will stop her in her tracks. When on leash walking in the neighborhood and there's another dog across the street, sometimes she will puff up, start to growl and maybe bark. She will also nudge at certain people's feet. I'm not sure if any of these symptoms are typical of ACD's or not. We are 'fostering' her and trying to find her a forever home as we are not allowed dogs at our apartment. Her prev owner dropped her off at a kill shelter. I have plenty of pictures, just ask.     She is a great dog at home, but not out in the public. She is extremely fearful and acts like she will attack. She is great in her environment, but not with other people or pets of others. I'm afraid she will hurt someone and or other animals. I cannot keep her. She is a loving cuddling dog, but she is so fearful and her aggression is to attack when she is on a leash. I am afraid to take her out for walks etc. She actually is a loving sweet dog at home, but I cannot let anyone in my home. I feel like a prisoner. She is a little over a year old, actually 1 year and seven months.

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Cody is about 4. Looks like a cattle dog mix, maybe some border collie, he has pretty white socks and a white beacon tail tip. But who knows. He was a 'stray' and been living in Placer County, animal services. His time was up. Cody is not a complicated dog. He shut down in the shelter environment. He had 3 handlers in his time there and became bonded with them. When he got here, he had no issues allowing me to handle him. He followed me into the yard. Very uncertain of all the dogs behind the fence. It's trial by fire here... sorry Cody. He came with me into the small chain link airlock, one gate separated him from the pack. And once the ... (Read More)gate closed behind us, I removed his lead, and opened up the gate into the yard and he was descended upon by a pack. Cody didn't freak, but he was standoffish and air snapped at first, just to warn them and they gave him his space. I did my chores and ignored Cody, while he got the lay of the land. Inspected kennel runs with open gates, all the feeders and located the watering stations. He's chilling in the yard with the pack, and already has initiated play with the grumpiest of all of them! He and Dottie appear to be friends now. And Cody is sniffing the others, one at a time, in a very dog appropriate way. He has no issues with male or female dogs, as long as they have manners, and here, they do. As I got aquainted, I had the opportunity to talk with Brittany, who transported him (5 hours) here, and was his handler at the shelter. I learned some things that were not disclosed to me up front. Cody had been deemed unsocial with dogs and displayed barrier aggression with dogs. He was also said to be incredibly shy, although never aggressive with people. He flattened on leash. So far I have observed none of this. Obviously, he was not at all comfortable in the shelter. I'm so sorry he was there for the last 4 months... he would never have shown himself to a potential adopter there. This was his last chance. And I think this handsome boy has lots of opportunity for good placement. He has yet to get with the total program here. But maybe as soon as tomorrow he will experience his first pack walk.     [Read About Natural Seizure Care] Scooter is a blue heeler/cattle dog mix, who weighs 45 pounds, and is roughly 8 years old. He's a special needs dog, in that he has epilepsy that is controlled by phenobarbital tablets twice daily. That said, Scooter is an amazingly easy dog to have, especially for a cattle dog! He is super sweet, loving, extremely attentive and obedient, with a very balanced personality. Scooter is a wonderful companion, but is not in your face about his affection. He wants to be with and stay close to his person/people, and very much wants to please you. He checks in often to look for guidance and that all is well. He is a playful dog with other ... (Read More)dogs. His favorite activities include running around playing with other dogs. He also loves to playful wrestle on the floor, and although he loves people, he can be reserved around strangers. He enjoys wandering about the office with his person, hoping to get treats from co-workers. Scooter's doggy manners at the park are perfect and respects boundaries and body language of other dogs. He ignores cats and kids and doesn't have an aggressive or confrontational bone in his body. He has never bitten, or growled at anyone or anything. He is a quiet boy, and not a barker, though he does howl at a nearby fire/ambulance siren occasionally. He's got a great memory and basically trains himself. Scooter is extremely motivated to please and responds amazingly well to treats. He pretty much taught himself sit, stay, slow (slow down walking and wait), come, lay down, shake and high-five. His obedience is so solid that he will sit and stay on command, even if he sees another dog he wants to run and play with. Scooter is a dream when out on walks. He is a great off-leash or on-leash dog, and will stay right at your side, and if playing, he will come immediately when called. He is also crate trained and completely housebroken. He has even learned to do his business in designated spots. Scooter is well acclimated to family and office life, having been his human's constant shadow at home and work for the past 4 years. He currently lives easily with small children and two cats. Although he loves to be with his person/people as much as possible, Scooter is not a lap dog, but instead prefers to just be at his person's side as much as possible. He was originally rescued from a terrible hoarding situation 4 years ago. Currently, his seizures only occur a couple of times a year. The episodes are mild, and last 2-4 minutes. Scooter has been on a stable dosage of his medication and requires only a yearly vet visit to renew the prescription. Pill administration is very simple as he allows his mouth to be opened and a pill dropped in. His original adopters are looking for a new home for him due to changing financial obligations and health issues in the family. An ideal situation for Scooter would be in a home with another dog, but he would also be fine as an only dog.     Good things come to those who wait. That is what Ansel knows. This stunning Australian Cattledog boy is waiting for a wonderful home who is ready for a fantastic, devoted companion dog without all of the crazy energy that comes with a younger Cattledog. Ansel is a 10 years old guy who weighs about 50 pounds. He is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. He is a gentle, special soul who is great with people of all ages, men and women. He is also wonderful with his same size and smaller dog pals. Larger, calm dogs would be wonderful pals for him as well. As for cats? That is when his Cattledog drive kicks in. He chases cats, ... He is a social butterfly and really gets excited to see people. He will snuggle, tool. He even likes to be brushed and enjoys a bath. If you are touching him, he is in heaven. He will even smile with happiness. Ansel says that an older guy doesn't need to sit on command every time. After all, he is a total gentleman. A snappy quick sit isn't in his repertoire, though he does sit most of the time when asked. He is also crate trained and house trained. A new home will want to reinforce that. Ansel would love to meet potential adopters who want a big heart kind of dog to be their pal. He is good in a car, but prefers one low enough to make for an easy entry and exit. The 'jumping into the truck' days are for kids, he says. Ansel is available in So California. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Poppy is a 7 month old female Australian Cattle dog. She is a little timid with strangers but very affectionate with people she knows. As with most cattle dogs they tend to bond closely with their owner and can be very protective and territorial. For this reason we prefer to adopt her out to an adult only home. She has had obedience training and knows commands and walks well on a leash. This breed also requires a great deal of physical exercise and is not suited to living in an apartment. Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Cheyenne came into the Visalia shelter with 3 other dogs. None of them socialized. The video I saw showed a lying down dog, frozen, while a shelter volunteer stroked her. Said a lot to me. I was able to take her, and the one that was glued to her side, Strawberry I call her. %A0 They flat couldn't handle the noise and environment of the shelter, and wouldn't have been seen by the public. The rescue coordinator reached out to me, and literally saved their lives. To get them here, there was a lot of handling going on. Getting them spayed, putting them on and taking them off a plane, new people, and dressing them in the gear they wore for a ... (Read More)short time. Neither reacted or even tried to protest. I like that! They are very respectful of humans. Cheyenne is about 2-3 yrs old. She allowed Strawberry to cling to her. But since coming here, they have both branched out and become part of a pack. Made new dog friends, and very social. Cheyenne is wonderful with other dogs. Zero aggression, and completely respectful of people. She is timid. But I love her. Easy to put a collar and harness on, and this way, easy walking, less pressure on neck or body by alternating pressure. Cheyenne started walking on leash. Was a rough start compared to Strawberry, who is already off leash, and stays by my side, like a well heeled dog.%A0 And now... what has transpired with Cheyenne; and this was amazing. Cheyenne is now completely off leash too! STORY: I have been walking Cheyenne on leash for a month. She knows the routine, so allows me to nudge her from her dog house, she loads into the van by herself, but always has a leash dragging ready for me to pick up. This day, we were walking by the van, sort of doubling back, and she did what was expected and hopped in. I was working with a new dog, so I thought, I would give Cheyenne and me a break, and focus on the newbie. She stayed in the van under the seat, and she knows the trail well by now, so here we go. Leap of faith and I left her there with the van doors open. We were up at the top of the mountain, when I saw a flash of grey, it was Cheyenne! She was zooming by me, looking the happiest I have ever seen her! She went to Strawberry who was ecstatic and initiated play and they zoomed around together. Then I got down low and called Cheyenne to me, and she walked up. I reached over to her chest and unclipped the leash that I clung to always, but was now dragging. It was on! She played and ran and was a different dog than the one that came here a few months ago! New photos are showing who this dog really is! She is ready to be seen. Decompressing at Central Coast Herding Dog Rescue and Spa! Cheyenne and Strawberry could be adopted together, they certainly get along beautifully, but chances are, that can't happen, that's fine. They have shown how adaptable they are. Both are completely dog social. No aggression whatsoever with other dogs. Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Blind

Another great dog from Ventura Animal Care Center. And they really did care for Dottie. Then they found me... Dottie is three years old, gorgeous, pure bred cattle dog, and she is blind. Dottie was first shown to me wearing a 'halo' donated by Muffin's Halo For Blind Dogs. Helps her tap into things rather than bump into. I'd never seen one. Great idea. However, she is phenomenal on her own. Just have to sort of lead her around if I move something, and unfortunately I'm doing some remodeling, so Dottie has to deal with furniture there one day, and not the next. Dottie figures it out! First day here she was in the yard with the pack all ... (Read More)day. I let her in the smaller yard w/access to the dog door, so she could eat and go into a straw filled dogloo if she wanted. Next thing I heard was the dog door. She was in the house. And she has been ever since. I took it in stride, congratulated her and led her to the Kuranda bed she would have to sleep on if she wanted to stay inside. Went out to dinner, and when I returned, there she still was. Now she is in and out at will. I tried bringing her food bowl to her, but she likes eating from the communal feeder outside. She's a normal dog. Somehow, she does see. Dottie was not connecting with me at first. Indifferent. I bribed her with chicken and everything I could think of... She had this harness on, and I thought it was kind of tight around her rib cage. She had been wearing it since she got here, 3 or 4 days, and I decided to take it off. Soon as I released that clip around her torso, she jumped up, licked me in the face, spun around, tail wagging! She was so happy! She was just not comfortable! She is now cruising around with a light lead hanging from a collar so I can guide if needed. This dog is nothing short of AMAZING! She jumped on my extra tall bed for Pete sake! Obviously not a dog you want the kids hanging off of. Although she has never opened her mouth in protest, she startles sometimes, I mean, she can't see you reaching out to touch her. Dottie would definitely be fine around any other animals. She is a great companion and will make someone a wonderful friend for the rest of her life.     This pretty young gal is Harvest, a Cattledog mix. She is approximately 2 years old and weighs 45 pounds. Harvest is a typical Cattledog. She likes to have a polite introduction to new people. Once she gets to know them, she is a great pal. We prefer that she go to a home with no kids or older kids, just because she has Cattledog tendencies. Harvest is polite in the house. She is house and crate trained. She is also smart. She already knows sit, come, and no. She learns quickly and wants to please. She will enjoy a home that keeps her learning. Harvest is nice with other dogs. She does prefer a polite introduction, but that is again ... (Read More)pretty standard for this breed. She prefers dogs her size or smaller. She also prefers polite dogs. Dog pals who are pests and just won't give up when she doesn't want to play can irritate her. So, a polite pal is a good pal for her. She is also good with cats! Harvest will be a great dog for an active home. She loves to go on walks, and pulls just a bit on the leash. She also loves to go on car rides. If she is at home, she fetches and fetches and fetches. She loves to play ball. She also enjoys playing with toys. Harvest is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. She is located in Buena Park, so is available for adoption in So Cal.     Young, adorable relationship-building dog in foster care really needs his forever home!! Jax, a 2.5 year-old, lean 30 lb. Cattle Dog/Am. Staff. mix, has been in foster for nearly 2 years now, most of his life. He is inherently fearful and needs to build trust through patience with a dog-savvy adopter, but he's so sweet, loving, and loyal, and builds such a strong bond once he does, it's worth every minute. He's very easily managed without any medications or special equipment. He's super intelligent, housetrained, knows how to use a doggie door, and knows lots of commands. He's also vaccinated, micropchipped, and neutered. Now all he ... (Read More)needs is to find his forever home. He has lived with two medium/large dogs and can potentially live with other appropriate, tolerant medium dogs if introduced properly. He plays very well with my medium dog. He does not get along with small dogs. He has also lived with cats and is fine with mellow ones. He will bark at them if they move erratically or show fear. He has also lived with foster kittens and has done well. He has been around older, dog-savvy kids but would not be ideal for a first-time dog owner. He is partially muzzle-trained for occasions when a situation could be too stressful for him (vet visits, exposure to unfamiliar people in new environments, etc.) He loves to go for long walks and hikes, fetch tennis balls, chew on bones and toys, and work for treats. He can also entertain himself well and does not appear to have any separation anxiety or similar issues. He just needs a place to call his own, where he feels safe and comfortable. His rescue organization is Love That Dog Hollywood, but he has been in my home as a foster. I'd be happy to share additional details or answer any questions about this wonderful little guy! (Less)

It doesn't get any sweeter than Baron von Snarfles. This darling little Cattledog mix found himself in a shelter with a seriously bad case of Secondary Acanthuses NIgricans (or for those of us non-medical types- long term neglect left his hair and skin in horrible shape). Now he is healing, his charming personality is coming out, and he is looking for a forever home who is willing to love him as his hair finishes growing in. Snarfles is between 7-9 years old and weighs about 30 pounds. He is a gentle, low key boy who is a social butterfly. He loves everyone that he meets: people, dogs, and cats. He even likes the vet! Baron von Snarfles ... (Read More)is a very nice boy in the house. He is house and crate trained. He adores people and loves to cuddle and be held. Heck, he is even looks dashing in a sweater. Don't let that calm demeanor fool you. He is a smartie pants. He knows his name and comes when called. He is working on sit and stay. As for food, that is his special pleasure. He will do anything for food. He can hear a treat bag open from the other side of the house and will bark to let you know that he wants one immediately! If you want a fun little buddy who will root for your sports team, hang out with you on the couch, and snack with you, this guy is your dog. That said, he is wonderful on leash and great in a car. So, when it's time to work off the calories from eating snacks, he is ready to keep you company on walks and hikes. Mostly, Snarfles is looking for an amazing home who will see the beauty in his heart. He adores attention and is almost surprised when he gets it.     Named Lucky because he truly is, this guy is a 5 year old Australian Cattledog who weighs about 27 pounds. Lucky is the kind of dog whose love you earn and, when you do, he is your best friend forever. He has had a rough time of it and a good samaritan stepped in to help him. Lucky, indeed. Now, he is looking for a home who doesn't mind taking it just a bit slow at first. Simple little things make all of the difference to him, such as talking to him before coming up to him, so he knows you are coming his way. Gentle leadership will help him relax and become even more wonderful than he already is. His foster mom wishes that she had fewer ... (Read More)dogs, so she could keep him. Lucky is a typically Cattledog in that he sometimes wonders about bigger dogs. He likes small dogs and would be fine with another medium-larger dog who isn't interested in being number one. He is also uninterested in the cat in the house, so should be fine with cats. Lucky is a smart guy. He learned his name in under a week. We don't know what his name was before he came to us. Also, he is house trained. He knows his basic commands: sit, stay, quiet, and come. He is initially excited to go on an adventure, but stops pulling on the leash after just a bit. He will walk right at your side, ready for whatever fun is in store. He does love car rides. He thinks that he would like to help drive by sitting on your lap. So, he is learning to stay on his side and will benefit from a dog seatbelt or crate in the car. Mostly, Lucky is a guy who wants a committed relationship. He has a cute smile, missing one tooth. When happy, he will come up and put his head on your chest. If you lay down on the floor, he is likely to come up and lay curled up against your arm. Once he loves, he loves deeply. Lucky is neutered and is current on his rabies vaccination. He will be up to date on his other vaccinations and microchipped before adoption. Lucky is ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to our favorite rescue partners. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting an Australian Cattle Dog in California
Australian Cattle Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. The Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most intelligent dog breeds, needing a lot of attention to stave off boredom. A neglected Australian Cattle Dog can become destructive. Australian Cattle Dogs have strong herding instincts and behave best when they have plenty of space and a job to do. Australian Cattle Dogs are well suited to farms and homes with large yards; they do not do well confined to an apartment or other small space. Australian Cattle Dogs are loyal and very obedient with attentive training. An Australian Cattle Dog tends not to do well with children unless it has known them since it was a puppy. Australian Cattle Dogs may be very close to their masters and reluctant to accept other people.

Australian Cattle Dog
lnteresting Australian Cattle Dog Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Cattle Dogs were bred by 19th century Australian pioneers to herd cattle on large ranches. Australian Cattle Dogs are excellent at catching frisbees. The Australian Cattle Dog nips at a cow's heels to keep it in line with the herd, and may apply this technique to its humans from time to time as well. Australian Cattle Dogs are descended from several different breeds, including Dalmatians and Smithfield Collies, which are now thought to be extinct.
