Personality: High Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Incontinent

[Read About Natural Incontinence Care] We love Didi so much! She's sweet and cuddly - a real lover - but then also very energetic and playful... the dog of our dreams.. But we don't know what to do - we adopted her last week from North Central LA Animal Shelter and a few days later she suffered a partial rectal prolapse.. We took her in and got her stitched up, but today (5 days later) she has prolapsed again and will likely need surgery.. the bills have become more than we can handle and are not sure what to do. if there is someone out there who can her give the love and care she needs better than we can, we would give her up... though we ... (Read More)would miss her very very much. Cattle dog people, this is a great one! Can anybody help or does anyone have advice?? Save Didi!!!!!!!!! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-08-21-00221Cooper (male)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Our boy Cooper is a gentle and happy soul, with a calm, easy going nature. He adores all people, and just wants to be loved. We estimate he is about 4-years old and weighs 40 lbs. He is moderate energy dog, who in true cattle dog fashion, wants to be by his person's side whenever possible. When meeting new people, he is a little shy, but warms up quickly to both men and women. He has no preference and adores being be loved and petted by all people. His fosters described Cooper's personality as 'complete sweetness,' with 'no bad qualities.' He will often sit quietly and gaze at his humans with pure love in his eyes. Once he feels ... (Read More)comfortable, he is also a very playful boy, who comes alive when you begin playing ball with him. Cooper is friendly and submissive with other dogs, and does NOT have any resource guarding issues. His is good with children and ignores cats. Cooper is also housebroken and walks well on leash. He prefers sleeping on his dog bed, rather than in a crate. He is NOT mouthy and does NOT dig in the yard. Cooper knows a few commands, and his adopters should continue his training and build his reperatoire of basic commands. He is a very smart boy, who very much wants to please his people. For these reasons, he is motivated to make his people happy, and would learn quickly. Cooper is a little fearful of getting into a car and nervous when riding in a car, unsure of where he's being taken. A few regular trips to the park or other enjoyable excursions, should have him eagerly hopping into the car very soon. Our boy is also a bit needy when his humans initially leave him, but does NOT bark or destroy anything when left alone. We believe that once he understands that he is not going to be abandoned, these issues will eventually fall away. He would do best in a home where he will not be left alone for long hours. The company of another dog would help, but Cooper much prefers human companionship. Getting the love and attention that he craves from his very own people, will do much to help him develop the confidence he needs. Many observations about Cooper lead us to believe that in his former life, he was not exposed to very much. His fosters describe him as 'naive' and wide-eyed when exposed to new situations. We would love to find a loving family that will take Cooper by the paw, to new places and show him the good things that the world has to offer. If you are interested in adopting Cooper, please complete our online adoption questionnaire. It provides us with your contact information, tells us a little about your situation and pet experience, and is part of our pre-approval process. You will find it on our website (hittgv.org), under the 'Adopt' tab, near the top of the page. Scroll down the page for the beginning of the form. When you hit 'submit' all your information will be emailed to us. Thank you! (Less)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very High Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive, Fearful/Anxious

Holly is one of the sweetest dogs we have ever known. However, she is the Alpha Female and she likes what she knows. She is super protective and only trusts those she has spent a lot of time with. Holly has become defensive and aggressive in certain situations, and with a child on the way, we will be unable to trust her with visitors/nanny or our child. We have tried training and advice from a certified trainer but we are not capable of supplying her with the 'work' that she needs. Recently Holly has been asked to not return to her day care as there are only a couple of attendants who she responds appropriately to. Holly is super smart, ... (Read More)picking up any tricks with 'click/treat' training. She LOVES playing Frisbee, cuddling on the couch, and being close to her owners. This being our first dog, we did not know what we were getting into with this Queensland Heeler & Lab mix. We are hoping that she will do better where she can run around most of the day on some land, perhaps a farm. Holly does best with adults and we feel that a couple who can spend most of the day with her would be the best fit. Dog lovers that know the personalities of heelers are a must! We are not experts with Dogs at all, but will be willing to have detailed conversations with anyone interested in helping Holly live a long and happy life. Please Help find a home for Holly. If you know of anywhere or anyone that may be able to help, please contact me. Our baby is due in December and we do not have a lot of options. (Less)

My husband took in this stray he found, in hopes of rehoming him but we have been unable to. We think he was abused before, but he is very sweet and gentle. He gets along with all of our dogs except for one so we've kept them separated completely. He's been friendly to all family, friends and kids who have come to our house. He can open certain door handles so it's better if you have round ones if you ever intend on putting him alone in a room. He loves to go for walks but isn't well trained on a harness. (He zig zags all over the place). He does bark a lot at other dogs or birds, while you walk him. But we've never been in a situation ... (Read More)where he met another dog while we walked him. So I'm not sure how he would react. I don't want to take him to the shelter, but we can't keep him. He's very sweet and just needs a loving home that has room and time for him. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-07-29-00168Tulsa (female)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Male Dogs Only, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Tulsa is a wonderful, athletic, and smart companion who loves her people as well as walks. Although she just turned 9, she shows no signs of slowing down, and loves to run around outside, play tug, or do tricks such as jumping through a hoop or over a stick. We adopted Tulsa 8 years ago from a rescue organization, and have had great adventures with her, including two cross-country moves. Unfortunately, we have a one-year-old baby and have not been able to make Tulsa's high energy compatible with our child's high energy, while still giving Tulsa the active lifestyle and loving attention she deserves. Tulsa is a wonderful dog, but needs ... (Read More)boundaries, as she had some aggression problems (primarily with other dogs, but with some strangers who tried to approach her) when she was about 3 years old. She does okay with some male dominant dogs, but not well with female dogs or small dogs. She has calmed down quite a bit over the years, and loves going on runs, hikes, or just cuddling on the couch with her people. She knows her commands (sit, stay, lie down, heel, shake, jump, roll over, pretty) and you can even train her to go potty in a specific area. She is crate trained and loves her crate. She has had no health problems and still has quite a bit of energy. She loves runs, but she is fine as long as she gets walks every day. We love Tulsa and would really like to find her a home where she gets the attention she deserves. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-07-23-00723Katie (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Katie is a beautiful 2.5 - 3.5 year old German Pointer and Blue Heeler mix. She is a medium-sized dog, who is currently overweight at 60lbs, but should weigh about 50lbs when at a healthy weight. She is current on all vaccinations. Katie should not be around children (approximately under 13 years), should not be around cats, and should not be around small dogs. She would do well with another dog if she has a slow introduction - she is not the kind of dog who can run up to a strange dog and be happy, and she shows signs of aggression to new dogs. When meeting new people, Katie may bark and be fearful. If given a treat, she commits to ... (Read More)loving the new person. Katie is also fearful of quick movements and loud sounds (i.e. semi-trucks scare her a lot) She is a very, very smart dog and all of these problems could be easily addressed with some training. Here is the story of Katie: I went to the pound last October looking for a dog who would fit my lifestyle. After looking at many dogs, I walked passed her cage. She was curled up in the back of her cage and clearly depressed; she had no desire to see people. I walked by her cage again and she picked up her head a little and wagged her tail a little. I had the staff take her out of that cage, and met with her. That's when I learned that she had been transferred to this pound by a local high-kill shelter because her time there was up. And, she had been at this pound for a week and had gotten no attention - everyone seemed to walk right passed her. I asked the staff why this may be and they told me she was an 'undesirable' breed. Well, I had fallen in love. I was told she had just been spayed and would be fully recovered in three days, and right then and there, she came home with me! When I got home, I realized it was a very good thing she had gotten out of that pound - her spay wound was infected, open, and causing her to throw up from licking it. I took her to the vet ASAP, where I learned that she was allergic to stiches. And she had several more complications with the wound; it ended up taking about 5 months for her to fully recovery. Well, after she finally recovered, she became a totally different dog - happy, loving, joyful, and playful - everything a dog should be! But I realized I made a mistake, because she could never be happy living in the tiny apartment I rented. She deserves a family who has more time for her and a yard. With a little training, she could be the most lovable and wonderful dog anyone could ever want. She is so amazing and I wish I could keep her because I love her, but I know she will be much happier in a home more suited for her. So to all you dog lovers out there, please consider giving Katie a new home! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-07-21-00580Liberty (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Liberty is our 4th of July rescue pup. Although he is his adult size at 48 lbs., he is still a silly pup. Our boy is a little overweight and ideally should be around 45 lbs. We estimate that he is about 1 year old. Liberty is extremely sweet and submissive, and loves all people and other dogs. He loves nothing more than to be with and play with his people and other dogs in his pack. His foster family has nicknamed him 'Bug,' because of his tendency to 'bug' those around him. As a goofy pup, he sometimes makes himself a pest to other dogs, following them around constantly and trying to get them to play. With people, he will let you know ... (Read More)that he would like some attention by gently poking your leg with his nose, and then giving you a happy smile and a wag. We have not seen 'Bug' with cats, but would guess that he would just want to play. There is not a mean bone in Liberty's body. Our boy is a bit timid, especially in strange new situations. We don't know his background before the shelter, but when he is exposed to new occurrences or situations that he is unsure about, he will flatten himself on the ground. Liberty 'Bug' will need someone who is patient and willing to spend the time to work with him to shape him into a happy and confident adult. He needs to learn about the world by going to lots of fun new places and experiences, to help build his confidence. Liberty very much wants to please and will be easy to train. He is completely house trained and knows how to use a dog door. He walks beautifully on a leash with limited correction. He sleeps in a crate, in the bedroom with his foster people and dogs, and will go into his crate for a nap. As he is still a pup, Liberty will need a consistent supply of chew toys so that he doesn't resort to your shoes and cords. He is a medium energy dog who would be happy with a daily long walk and to be by your side. If you are interested in adopting Liberty. please complete our online adoption questionnaire. It provides us with your contact information, tells us a little about your situation and pet experience, and is part of our pre-approval process. You will find it on our website (hittgv.org), under the 'Adopt' tab, near the top of the page. Scroll down the page for the beginning of the form.     Hazel is a darling, sweet and lovable, 34 lb, cattle dog/pit bull mix. This petite 1 year old girl is chocolate brown with the white speckled pattern on her chest, belly and the tips of her feet. She is super affectionate and friendly. She's a great loose leash walker! And she would make a super agility dog! She is so athletic, agile, well-behaved and learns quickly. She loves plush toys, jumping and playing tug. She also likes kongs, treat balls, bully sticks. She is very strong for a little thing. Hazel is in obedience training and doing well. She is now in the habit of sitting and waiting at the door or in the car to go out. She also ... (Read More)can sit and wait for her food. So trainable. At night she sleeps on a dog bed on the floor at the foot of our bed but she is such a great snuggler I've spent the night curled up with her on our sofa bed. She currently lives with a 9 lb Chihuahua mix and they engage in great games of chase and nuzzling too. Sometimes Hazel doesn't know her own strength and she can get a little overpowering and mouthy so we are working on that. We can take food or toys from her mouth with no problem whatsoever. However sometimes she can be a little food aggressive with our small dog. This seems to be lessening as currently they have a pig's hoof they take turns nibbling on. Hazel is looking for a confident leader to help her overcome leash reactivity and learning to stay calm and submissive. Her current owners have been working with her and made good progress, however due to their current living situation, they can no longer keep her. She really has so much love to give and is a total sweetheart! Please consider giving her a forever home. Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

Nakota is a wonderful dog who needs a little more structure in his life when meeting new people. He gets worried living on a horse boarding facility because of all the activity. I rescued him from a man who was keeping him crated 22 out of 24 hours of the day. He bonds very strongly with his 'family' and welcomes outsiders after meeting them a few times. He is NEVER aggressive but does get nervous around strangers the first few times. Kota knows all of his basic commands and is learning more advanced commands because he is starting agility training. He walks on a loose leash with just a regular collar. He will follow you on horseback to go ... (Read More)trail riding. He gets along with EVERY dog on the face of this earth and has NO interest in chasing/killing/eating anything.. even tasty looking rabbits. He does excellent off-leash as well and will follow you on a bike, golf cart, quad etc. He rides in the car/truck like a champ.. gets in and immediately curls up and goes to sleep. He loves swimming, hiking, playing fetch (he brings the ball or stick back and drops it on command. He wont touch it while it's in your hand either), going to the dog park, going to the beach, and anything that involves exercise. He loves kids as well! Please understand his need for exercise. He is not a couch potato. He would be great for someone wanting an agility or fly-ball dog after he gains some confidence. Please have experience training a dog with nervousness around people (no touch, no talk, no eye contact). He is a really cool dog and needs an equally cool, fun, adventurous owner. If at any point you can not keep him for any reason, he will be returned to me. Please be SERIOUS about adopting him before you contact me! No one likes their time wasted, and neither do I. Prepare to drive to SOLVANG CA. This will not work if you live 3 states away and are not prepared to drive that far for a dog. I am an animal lover so I tried to fit him in here. I just do t have the time to work with him. He is high energy, unlike my dogs. He wants to play or be with a companion. He is a good watch dog. I need to find him a suitable home. I have cats also. He doesn't hurt them, but he barks and lunges at them in the window. My home is just not the place for him. I don't want to have to take him to a shelter so I am hoping he finds a home here.

Avail 6/15/2014 Fargo is looking for an awesome home! Sweet boy - waggerific tail. Brings you his toys to throw for him. Takes treats gently. Dances for booty scratches. Gives kisses on the first date. Uses a doggy door. Walks on leash very nice. Wants to be your lap dog. Loves to play with hose water/sprinklers. Is used to being an inside dog with outside access to a backyard through a doggy door and sleeping with his person. He needs a decent amount of daily hard panting exercise - more than a 20-45 minute walk around the neighborhood. As long as he has his daily exercise he will be a good boy and not get into trouble. (A tired ... (Read More)dog is a good dog!) He quickly warms up to nice adult strangers, older children that have been taught how to interact with and treat dogs properly are ok but we would advise against younger children (or any that run around and scream - he gets overly excited and does not like the running and screaming and starts chasing/nipping). Has been with a BIG sister - Finnish Spitz/Shep mix - since he was found on the road injured at 3 mths. (Vet thinks he was tossed out of a car.) Owner is unable to care for him any longer due to declining health but would like to keep in touch and get updates on how he is. His owner made a very difficult decision in the best interest of Fargo's future. 2 yrs old, ACD x Dachshund, Intact (will be neutered ASAP), vaccinations current. Fargo will be learning more of the basics (not to chase/nip other dogs), some tricks, beginning agility and trying out dock diving. More eval coming, videos coming. (Less)

Meet Ranger. This handsome speckled boy is a 8 year old Australian Cattle Dog/Lab mix. Abandoned by his owner, he was saved by a good samaritan who helped to find a rescue for him. He is now looking for his forever home. Ranger is a healthy 79 pounds of speckles and wagging tail. He is good with other dogs, even little dogs, and sometimes wants to play. He also enjoys a good game of tag with his person, barking for more when you stop. He has the right amount of energy to be a nice walking companion. He will ask for your attention, too, if you are ignoring him. He very much wants to interact with his person. Ranger appreciates having his ... (Read More)rear end scratched just at the base of the tail. Some nice scratching and some dog cookies and this guy is your pal. Ranger walks nicely on a leash and rides politely in the car. He hasn't shown any food aggression and generally takes his treats gently. Ranger has already learned 'sit' and other basic obedience commands. He is currently attending public obedience classes and doing very well. He also enjoys regular walks. Ranger isn't a fan of being brushed. This and an interest in taking goodies off of the counter appear to be his only faults. Ideally, Ranger would get a home with a large, fenced yard. He loves to run around, especially if his people will run around in the yard with him. He seems to have low prey drive since he isn't interested in squirrels. That means that cats are probably just find in Ranger's company. He is house trained and settles nicely when invited in. Ranger is neutered, up to date on shots, and microchipped. He is ready for his home. Because of his size, toddlers and small kids are not a fit for him. Older kids are fine. A vet reference, personal references, and home visit are required as part of the adoption process. Send an e-mail and an adoption application will be sent to you to begin the process. Ranger is being fostered in Simi Valley. (Less)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Not Good with Cats

King is a very smart and athletic dog. He is crate-trained, house-trained and leash-trained. He knows all basic commands including 'sit', 'down', 'up' and 'shake'. Unfortunately I must move into a small apartment with no yard and will not have the time or space that King needs to live a good life. I would like to find someone who has the capacity and resources to continue training King and give him the home that he deserves. Ideally I would prefer someone who has experience with a cattle dog! He is a very loyal and protective dog. Please e-mail or call me for more information.

Meet Salt! Salt has made fast progress! She started off the year living as wild dog in the desert, emaciated, anti-social and beat up. Now, she's off-leash on pack walks, playing with other dogs and pups and loading back into the van when it is time to go. She even lets us pet her. She's a character--no a comedian, but she doesn't know it. She just wants to be her sassy-self, have fun with her dog friends and rough house. So amazing to see this girl blossom. Check out her video here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=1491919827690758. Salt is one of the last 2 Desert Dogs, trapped and brought directly to Central Coast Herding Dog ... (Read More)Rescue with her buddy Pepper. In foster, she has learned to appreciate the finer things that were not offered to her in her prior life (food, shelter, even a nice bed that her foster parents let her share). Salt is one of the more confident and curious Desert Dogs we have had the pleasure to rehabilitate. Upon meeting her foster dad for the first time she marched right over and sniffed him! Big deal for a dog that had had no human contact prior to arrival at CCHD. Salt is house-broken, dog social, non-destructive and rides nicely in the car. Looking for someone to keep your dog exercised? Salt will make sure to get their yaya's out!     Australian Cattle Dogs were bred by 19th century Australian pioneers to herd cattle on large ranches.
