This is the kind of save that just makes you go Ahhhh;. Stuart is one of 2 newly aquainted buddies slated, for euthanasia in Riverside. Downtrodden in the shelter, both appeared to be seniors... not so much now! Stuart and Bailey haunted Raeann Murphy. Who in turn haunted me! They are hanging out in Huntington Beach looking for their respective homes, now under Central Coast Herding Dog rescue. Stuart is perfect. The gray on his face and body is from Heeler blue tick coloring, not age. He has double dew claws on his back feet, which the shelter actually noted as little 'masses'! Kinda funny... Stu he is absolutely gorgeous! Happy and ... (Read More)gentle and seems to be in perfect condition, great teeth, eyes look good, needs to put on a couple more pounds, and his coat is beautiful. Stuart is house trained, leash trained, great with other dogs, loves to play but is actually very calm, He has now decided, he loves to get hugs! At first he was a little iffy on the whole hug thing, a little undignified maybe? Now, he waits for them lol! I can see why the staff at Riverside were desperate to get him out of the shelter. Even the vet staff were a bit emotional when they heard he was getting out. Stuart is lovely Photos updated at: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1777497049133033.1073742348.1428374324045309&type=1&l=2c7d0a2c48 Adoption fee is $150, to cover vetting, transportation, micro-chip + registration.     This classic Blue Heeler is here. He is little!! Maybe 25 lbs tops... He was a stray with a couple siblings. He was caught by Kalyn's husband, brought home, neutered, vaccinated, and now, micro-chipped too. He's proven to be fine around cats.     Arlo wound up in the shelter with who we believe to be his brother, we named him Woody. He'll be be here soon. Arlo is very small, about 23 lbs... been seeing some tiny heelers in lately. Arlo walks on leash, but it's still new to him. He'll be fine. Was not at ease with all the new faces. Solved that right away, lots of private rooms here. And while I did a 3 dog intake, I let Arlo chill in his own suite with a big bowl of food and a gallon of fresh water. Once I has the others in the yard, I opened Arlo's kennel run. Took some photos, and some other pack members meandered in and out. Arlo let them know if anyone got too close for ... (Read More)comfort, and these dogs are very well balance, they just move on to someone more social. And Arlo relaxed. He knows, he has a safe haven if the dogs are too scary. But he is now walking around and checking things out. He's probably only been with his brother for the couple years of his life. Although, they do not appear to lean on each other as allies, they can and probably will be adopted separately. He knows, he has a safe haven if the dogs are too scary. Rescue Me ID: 16-08-18-00438Augie (male)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Augie is a 15-18 months old, 41 pound boy, who is very friendly, full of life and kisses. He meets everyone with a tail wag, and has a very happy disposition. He is a moderate energy guy, but as a young dog, he needs daily exercise. Augie wants to play and walk first thing in the morning. Once he has had his morning exercise, he is mellow for the rest of the day and content to hang out with his people. He does, however, have youthful exuberance and if you are up for it, he is always up for playing or a hike or some exercise. Augie is a 'Velcro,' or maybe a super glue dog, who wants to be with his person or his pack more than anything. In the ... (Read More)sweetest, most loving way, he wants to sit by your side every chance he gets. He also enjoys snuggling on the couch with his person. Augie loves his walks! When the leashes come out, he runs to the door and sits calmly waiting to be leashed. He may tug a little a first because he's so excited to get out in the world, but he quickly settles into a nice pace by your side. Augie is very responsive to cues from both humans and other dogs. If told Leave It, he will do so immediately. He knows Sit, frequently comes when called, and is learning to take treats gently. He sometimes jumps up on people and counters and is being taught 'Off!' Augie is a quick and eager learner. Augie is a quiet boy who rarely barks--even when the other dogs are barking. So far, his foster mom has only heard him bark a couple of times when someone has come to the door. He is very well mannered in the house, and hangs out quietly. He has met some dogs very nicely, both male and female, but may not like every dog he meets. Augie gets very excited about meeting other dogs he sees. He is very balanced, and not naturally a dominant dog. Will not challenge another more dominant dog. However, if an unknown dog is acting up, by barking or lunging behavior, Augie will respond the same way. If another is fine, he is fine. He seems to take his cues from the energy of the other dog. He liked his foster sister (an female ACD) at their very first meeting. Augie loves playing tug-of-war and hanging out with his foster sister. We think he would do well with a mellow, easy going, or playful dog. He would also be fine as an only dog. He enjoys playing with toys. There may be a scuffle for a toy if playing fetch with one ball and two dogs. We have not seen him interact with small children, but with older kids, he is friendly and polite. He has a high prey drive and would not do well in a household with cats. Augie enjoys car rides, and needs more rides to fun destinations. Augie was rescued after a month in a shelter kennel. As a result, he does not like being kenneled or crated. His foster mom is working on crate training him with positive reinforcement. If another dog approaches his food or a toy he has, he does sometimes give a little warning growl, but his foster mom has been working with him and seen improvement. Augie has shown some herding tendencies. He sometimes nips at other dogs' heels and is gently mouthy, sometimes taking his foster mom's foot or arm into his mouth to play, Augie has the potential to be the perfect pet. We are seeking adopters who will continue teaching him boundaries, appropriate behavior, and giving him more exposure to new things in the world. If you are interested in meeting and possibly adopting Augie, we ask that you first complete our adoption questionnaire, which is the first step of our adoption process. Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Those amazing ears belong to super cute Okra! She turned 11 weeks old as of 8/17/2017 and should be a medium-sized dog. Her mom is a purebred red Cattledog and, based on how these puppies are turning out, there is a possibility that their daddy was a Cattledog, too. That said, Okra is all that a Cattledog person loves. She is whip smart. She is super cute. She is a bit devilish. What's not to love? Okra is initially sensitive when new people show up. She cries out of you sneak up on her! As is usual for a Cattledog, she likes to know what is going on around her. So, slower introductions are better for Okra. With a nice introduction, she is ... (Read More)good with men, women, and even quieter kids. Okra is a silly girl. She loves to play with other dogs. Even though she is a pretty little girl, she is rough and tumble, too! She loves a good game with her Cattledog siblings and her mom. With people, she already enjoys a rousing game of fetch. She would love to continue that in her new home. Okra is all that a Cattledog lover enjoys in the breed. She would love a home who knows what to do with a smart, fun Cattledog pup and is interested in doing some training to help Okra be all that she can be. Okra is current on her vaccinations, microchipped, and is scheduled for her spay in order to be ready for her forever home. She is available for adoption in Southern CA. She is also nice with other dogs and cats. Seriously, she is everything nice. Likewise, she will enjoy a home where the other inhabitants, especially the dog inhabitants are also nice. Mellower and fun dogs are right up her alley and she would like to play with a dog like that. Tillie would love a home where ... (Read More)love is in the air. She will be a straight A student in obedience class and will enjoy going on adventures with her people. At the end of the day, Tillie is going to make someone a fantastic best friend. She is really dedicated to her person and is very much a velcro dog. She is easy to correct and looking to please. Tillie is spayed, current on her vaccinations, microchipped, and ready for her forever home. She is available for adoption in Southern CA. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-08-17-00545Nani (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

We named our newest girl, Nani (pronounced Nah-Nee), which in Hawaiian means pretty or enjoyable - and that is exactly what she is. Nani is about a year old and weighs around 38 lbs. We believe she is a mix of Australian kelpie and cattle dog. She has a soft, very loving, and submissive personality. She bonds quickly and will follow her person from room to room. Nani is easy and sweet with well behaved children, warms up to women quickly, but is initially a bit hesitant when meeting new men. For a young dog, she is a moderate energy girl, although she does have her bursts of happy, youthful energy, when she playfully runs like the wind. ... (Read More)Nani is a joy to have as a companion. She loves to be near her person, give kisses and roll over for petting and one-on-one time. If you are busy, she will lay quietly nearby waiting for whatever is next. When you look at her or give her attention, her tail will reply with a low, happy wag. As a basically submissive girl, Nani meets other dogs her size or bigger, with respect, although she seems a bit nervous. She gets along well with other calm and friendly dogs, and even tries to make friends with dogs who ignore her. Our girl has a very warm and caring heart. After two days at her new foster home, the other dogs are tolerating, but avoiding Nani. Even so, on day two, when on a walk, her senior canine foster sister tired and stopped suddenly to lay down and rest, twice; and each time Nani showed concern and returned to her to nuzzle her, as if to ask if she was alright. She has also invited her older foster sister to play, but to no avail. Because of the way she wants to befriend the older dogs in her foster home, we believe that Nani would love to have another dog around her size or larger as a playmate. She very much wants to please, and is always ready to cuddle or interact with her human(s). Nani isn't sure of herself and doesn't know if she is always welcome. Sometimes she will sit quietly and wait to be invited to join you, and other times when she cannot contain the happy puppy in her, she will leap up to sit by you on the couch or bed and shower you with kisses. Most of the time, Nani is calm and well mannered, quietly hanging out in the house. However, when she is excited and wants to show how much she loves you, she will need to learn that she should not leap up on people and furniture to get close to you. Nani is very observant and bright, and learns quickly. She watches her person's face for cues, and her ears are like very expressive flags, moving up and down with her worried or happy thoughts. She is also extremely quiet and the only times she has let out one or two barks was if she is startled by someone approaching or believes an intruder is approaching the house or room. If she is startled and barks, and is told to stop, she complies immediately. On leash, Nani needs some practice. We believe she hasn't been out on walks, and everything is new to her. As a result, she tends to wander from side to side and stop, depending on what she sees and smells. Otherwise she walks nicely and does NOT pull. Although she is unsure of where she is being taken with each car ride, she rides quietly in the car, and watches the scenery go by. So far, Nani seems to be housebroken. Barely out of puppyhood, Nani has already been uprooted from at least two homes and found herself in the shelter several times. She is currently a bit cautious during the first few seconds/minutes in a new situation or when being driven someplace. Also, she will not do her business during leash walks. She will wait until she returns home to go on familiar property, where she feels comfortable. We were told, third-hand, that this dog has high prey drive and should not be in a household with cats, and that she did not do well with a small dog. So far, we have not seen her with either of these, and cannot verify whether this is true. We will update this description as we learn more about Nani. If you are interested in meeting and potentially adopting Nani, we ask that you first complete our adoption questionnaire, which is the first step of our pre-adoption process. Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Named Lucky because he truly is, this guy is a 5 year old Australian Cattledog who weighs about 27 pounds. Lucky is the kind of dog whose love you earn and, when you do, he is your best friend forever. He has had a rough time of it and a good samaritan stepped in to help him. Lucky, indeed. Now, he is looking for a home who doesn't mind taking it just a bit slow at first. Simple little things make all of the difference to him, such as talking to him before coming up to him, so he knows you are coming his way. Gentle leadership will help him relax and become even more wonderful than he already is. His foster mom wishes that she had fewer ... (Read More)dogs, so she could keep him. Lucky is a typically Cattledog in that he sometimes wonders about bigger dogs. He likes small dogs and would be fine with another medium-larger dog who isn't interested in being number one. Lucky is a smart guy. He learned his name in under a week. We don't know what his name was before he came to us. Also, he is house trained. He knows his basic commands: sit, stay, quiet, and come. He is initially excited to go on an adventure, but stops pulling on the leash after just a bit. He will walk right at your side, ready for whatever fun is in store. He does love car rides. He thinks that he would like to help drive by sitting on your lap. So, he is learning to stay on his side and will benefit from a dog seatbelt or crate in the car. Mostly, Lucky is a guy who wants a committed relationship. He has a cute smile, missing one tooth. When happy, he will come up and put his head on your chest. If you lay down on the floor, he is likely to come up and lay curled up against your arm. Once he loves, he loves deeply. Lucky is neutered and is current on his rabies vaccination. He will be up to date on his other vaccinations and microchipped before adoption. Lucky is ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to our favorite rescue partners. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-08-10-00587Astro (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Astro is a gorgeous, neutered 15-18 month old, 51 lb. cattle dog, with a bit of Aussie shepherd. He has excellent conformation, and his coat markings are a work of modern art. Astro is an outgoing and curious boy, with a moderate energy level. He is great when meeting all adults, children, farm animals, horses and other dogs. He will chase cats that run, but we think that he could live with cats, if introductions are slow and managed. More than anything, Astro wants to find his own person to bond closely with and to be with whenever he can. While he is a very alert, observant and inquisitive cattle dog, he is also easy going, and loves ... (Read More)sitting at his person's feet or placing his head in his human's lap for petting and close personal time. His favorite time of the day is snuggle time in the bed, if you are okay with that. He shows affection with nuzzling and very sweet, gentle puppy chews. Our boy meets other dogs in a very curious, friendly, relaxed way, with tail wags. He adores playing with other dogs. However, in a multi-dog household, it must be made clear to him that he must learn to share his person. For this reason, Astro will need a person who is experienced with this breed and who will be a clear leader to him. If not, Astro will try to make decisions and run the household for you. Astro isn't very interested in toys or treats. His rewards are interacting with people and other dogs. If another dog is not friendly or snaps at him, he will jump back or run. He may also stand a few feet away and bark at them several times to let them know that they weren't nice to him. If a dog is truly threatening, he will avoid them. Astro is a mostly a very quiet boy, but he may bark at passing bicycles. He will bark when crated initially, but settles in nicely. It is clear to us that Astro is one of the best examples of a cattle dog. He is a thinking dog with brilliant intelligence and the ability to puzzle through situations. He has such a velcro nature, that the people who found and fostered him never had him on leash. He would follow them everywhere and wait for them. Astro very much wants to please, but also has a mind of his own, with a sense of right and wrong and will let you know what he thinks. He is as close as you can get to a human child in a dog's body. One thing - Astro is nearly totally deaf. He has learned some hand signals and is very eager to learn more. It is such a shame that this amazing boy, with so much heart, personality, love, brains and a great temperament, was never taught anything before he was found stray. Astro is a quick learner, and now starting to learn basic commands, manners and boundaries. He redirects very easily, with a quick hand signal for 'No' and he will stop any inappropriate action. After being redirected 2-3 times, he will stop any further attempts. For several reasons, we believe that Astro was mostly an outside dog. He loves hanging out outside or inside, as long as he is with his person. Astro will walk by your side without a leash. He is just beginning to learn how to walk on leash, and will sometimes pull for several minutes, in excited anticipation of an adventure. While he seems house trained, our fosters are taking him out frequently as a reminder to go outside. Astro needs to be restrained when riding in a car. He wants to lay beside you or place his head on your lap as you drive. In summary, as a cattle dog, Astro's personality is one of the finest and truest examples of the brains and heart of the Australian cattle dog breed. Our boy has a lot of love, and bonds as fast as super glue. He needs some work to catch up on training he should have received as a puppy. We are seeking adopter(s) who can see the incredible potential in Astro, and who will return all the love in his heart, and are willing to polish this diamond in the rough, into the gem that he is. We encourage any adopter to learn about training a deaf dog and the special attention they require. If you are interested in meeting Astro, we ask that you first complete our adoption questionnaire (online form or download a hard copy), which is the first step of our pre-adoption process. Rescue Me ID: 16-07-29-00088Remi (female)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Remi is a super sweet natured, happy, friendly, and loving girl. She weighs 39 lbs. and we estimate she is 15-18 months old. For a young cattle dog, Remi is very calm and only a moderate energy girl. While she likes to play a bit with her little sister and the other family dogs, Remi's favorite activity is hanging out with, and being beside her human. She enjoys meeting new people, and is very friendly and social with them. Her foster mom says that Remi is a 'total love bug.' Like her more timid sister (Cedar), Remi enjoys cuddling and would love to be in your lap. At her foster home, Remi is great with everyone, mom, dad, their toddler. ... (Read More)She is good with the other dogs, but she prefers spending time with her people. Remi adores the family toddler and gives him kisses throughout the day. She also enjoys showing her foster dad how much she loves him. If the other dogs are trying to interact with her and she is not interested, she will give a soft grumble to let them know she wants to be left alone. It is only communication, and she never escalates further. When seeing the resident cat, she ignored him. We feel sure that Remi and her sister had been outside only dogs, before coming to their foster home. While Remi probably also had very limited experience with anything outside of their original yard, before arriving at her current foster home, she seems more social, outgoing and willing to enter new situations than her timid younger sister. Remi walks fairly nicely on leash; and when off leash, she will walk at your side. She is doing well with her potty training, by being let outside every few hours, but it's a work in progress. Both Remi and her sister, love being inside the house, and will not go outside unless their foster mom goes out with them. Once outside, they will follow her around and play with the other dog. Similar to her sister, Remi is very quiet, and seldom barks. She is also just beginning to learn how to be a dog, and discovering dog toys. She has made a few mistakes, thinking that similarly sized household items are toys (i.e. TV remote, etc.) and began chewing or playing with them. Once told no, Remi will drop it, walk away, and not return to it. She was not previously introduced to balls, and has no interest in chasing them. Remi is NOT nippy, and has NOT shown any strong herding tendencies. Her strongest cattle dog personality trait is her velcro nature. Remi is a very good eater, and could benefit from a little weight loss. During meals, when she has finished her food, if nearby, she will move into her sister's food bowl. Her fosters are managing this, to prevent her from eating double portions. Remi has no food or resource guarding/aggression. Her foster can reach into her bowl while she is eating. While Remi is a very happy and social girl, who very much wants to please, as with her more timid sister, if voices get raised or she hears any yelling, Remi will also become fearful. In the same way as her sister, Remi is constantly afraid that she may be in trouble all the time for doing something wrong. Remi would love to go where ever her person goes. If her human leaves the house, she will whine her sadness for several minutes, and may paw at the door a little, in an attempt to get her to return or to try and follow. It would be ideal if Remi's person, worked from home or could bring her to work, or is retired. Remi would not do well in a situation where she was left alone for most of the day. She is not crate trained and does not like going into a crate. Remi probably was never in a car before. She is fearful of getting into a vehicle, and will get motion sickness on long rides. Her foster mom is working with her, and learning to ride in a vehicle is a work in progress. If you are interested in meeting Remi, we ask that you first complete our adoption questionnaire (online form or download a hard copy), which is the first step of our pre-adoption process. Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

My sweet Queensland Heeler needs a new home. She is 1.5 yrs, spayed, up-to-date vaccinations/Heartguard. She knows basic commands, lives inside (w/outside access) and is very affectionate and playful. She is easy to train, but definitely needs 'jobs' to do. She needs somebody who has the time and energy to dedicate to training and keeping her busy. She cannot go to a home with small animals or children as she does not do well with either. Small re-homing fee to ensure serious inquiries.

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Magnus is a real Australian Cattledog ready for a real home, a home where his handsome, rugged good looks, full tail, and Cattledog quirks are appreciated. Magnus is 3 years old and weighs about 45 pounds. He found himself in jail and was pulled to safety just in the nick of time. Fortunately, he found himself in a Cattledog foster home where his charming personality has started to blossom. Magnus isn't just a handsome boy. He is smart, too. He knows sit, wait, shake, and is perfecting down. As a bit of a renaissance man, he is ready and able to learn more. Magnus is also polite in the house. He is house trained. He is good with most ... (Read More)dogs, but thinks of small dogs as play things, so only medium or large dogs for this guy. He has been cautious around the cat, but what smart guy wouldn't be? Magnus appreciates adventure. He is good in the car and walks politely on leash. He would appreciate a good hike or something else equally outdoorsy. He shows interest in the ball and thinks that a good game of tug is fantastic. Magnus isn't a total tough guy. He is a great cuddler. He loves to snuggle and even sings a few tunes from time to time. However, he is definitely a Cattledog, so no small kids. He would appreciate a home who knows likes a few quirks. He needs a home who knows how to manage his prey drive. He also needs work on leash reactivity, so a home that would enjoy training and possible engaging a trainer would be ideal. Magnus is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. He is ready for a forever home in Southern California. A home visit and vet reference are required to adopt Magnus. (Less)

This beautiful and spunky six year old cattle dog/shepherd mix is Bella. Bella is incredibly loyal and attentive, and loves to show how well she can sit, share a paw, 'leave it' and lay down. She has been housebroken since she was very young and always lets someone know when she needs a potty break. Bella is also excellent on a leash and has a lot of energy so walks and jogs are her favorite activities. She is happiest around 'family', since she's a shy and anxious girl and being surrounded by new people is stressful for her. When she's feeling stressed or scared, Bella likes to seek out cozy tight spaces and will also bark when strangers ... (Read More)are around to protect her home and family, but she NEVER bites. She plays well with other dogs but has never spent much time with children.     We have been fostering Bella, a beautiful and affectionate two-year-old Australian cattle dog mix. She came to us from the San Francisco SPCA who brought her into the city from Stockton. Bella is alternately bored and over-stimulated by the demands of city life. She does better in a suburban environment, but will really thrive on a ranch or farm where she can be free to run and have the responsibility of patrolling a large area to keep its inhabitants safe from harm and gophers. Bella will do well in a home where there are people or animals to watch over. She is very protective and will bark aggressively at perceived threats, though she ... Rescue Me ID: 16-06-14-00740Koi (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Good/Great: Koi is an obedient loving animal. He follows commands such as: sit, stay, down, off, paw, roll over. He's house trained and managed to live in a 2 bedroom apartment over the last 2 years (he's 3 years old, the first year he lived in a house with a back yard). He loves to play fetch and if given the opportunity would do this all day. Walks very well on a leash with an occasional tug if he sees a cat or squirrel. He can jog well on a leash. He's never destroyed any of our belongings or our property, he sticks to chewing his own toys and will de-fluff any stuffed animal toy. He's been kind and patient with our 1.5 year old son. He ... (Read More)lets us know when he needs to go outside by coming up to us and staring us down. He rarely barks indoors, unless someone comes to the door (he will bark two-three times). He loves people once he gets to know them and can trust them. Bad: Koi has fearful anxiety initially with strangers that are not part of the 'pack' (that includes small children/toddlers and adults). This usually manifests as excessive barking when someone new initially walks in. We've addressed this by keeping him in a separate area where he can see and smell the stranger while he watches us interact with him/her. After about 5-10 minutes we let him back in and all he wants to do is play fetch. He has over the last 8 months sporadically lunged at strangers while we walk him and so we've resorted to putting a mussel on him when we take him on walks since this lunging is random and he doesn't show any warning signs or anxiety that we can see. He also has some fearful aggression towards unknown dogs. When Koi was about 8 month old we took him to a dog park where a pack of dogs all came to greet him too suddenly and corralled him into a corner with a couple of dogs lunging towards him. Since then, he's just become more and more anxious towards new dogs. Also we think because we've been less able to exercise him, this aggression/anxiety has worsened. It's strange because we also have a small fluffy dog whom he is very sweet and respectful towards. He's never bitten or or shown food, toy or bedding aggression towards her either. We unfortunately do not know people with stable dogs who we could work with to introduce Koi and help him work through this fear. In short, he needs daily exercise and someone who is willing to work with him with his stranger and dog anxiety. Ideally also a household with no children or at least an owner who is mindful about small children and toddlers and will put Koi away or remove him from this situation. Ugly: Over the last 2 months, Koi has managed to bite two separate people. In one situation, shortly before we placed the mussel, he was calmly sitting by my side when a strange woman came and started talking to our toddler. Our smaller dog began howling and barking at her. The woman then proceeded to pet our small dog which our small dog allowed. After our small dog stopped barking and the woman and I were making small talk, I moved my body slightly towards her and Koi lunged grabbing her arm. He didn't puncture skin but he did manage to bruise her arm. This is when we decided that his random lunging had gone too far and bought a mussel which we use when we walk with him. More recently, he also happened to lunge at a young 4 year old girl. At the time he was under the care of someone else who'd been exercising him daily for about 1 week. He had just come back from a 3 mile hike. He was sitting outside in the front lawn with some other adults, a neighbor came back with his daughter and not anticipating a reaction, this caregiver allowed the little girl to approach Koi too quickly or suddenly at which point he lunged towards the little girl and this time punctured the skin on her forearm. Again, Koi just doesn't trust strangers that easily. We're unsure where this insecurity comes from as we've never abused him or put him in a situation where he needed to show that he needed to defend himself with this kind of fearful aggression. There's no fees and we will give you all his belongings, vet records, including 5 months worth of flea/tick/worm prevention meds. We LOVE this dog and don't wish to euthanize him as he's an amazing and wonderful companion to our family (we've considered euthanasia if we cannot find another loving and patient home for him). But we just don't have the time and resources to work with him and his anxiety. Our work schedules sometimes keep us away from home for up to 10 hours during the workweek leaving only myself or my husband with two dogs and a toddler. (Less)

He's very shy at first but once he's comfortable he is very friendly and loyal and loving. Wherever you are you will find him as your shadow. He's housebroken and gets along well with other dogs once he's warmed up to them. He tends to do better with little dogs and dogs close to his size. He's never met a treat he didn't like and is very eager to learn and makes great eye contact when being talked to. He's not a big fan of balls or squeaky toys but he does like stuffing free ... (Read More)animals. He's a very sweet dog who is happiest being by your side. His absolute favorite thing to do is lay on the ground then flip over and rub his back while kicking his legs in the air. He loves children and if he feels there is something wrong he checks up on them and gives kisses to make them feel better. Jack will panic a little if you tug on his collar. I'm not sure what happened to him but I can assume someone yanked on it too rough and he does get a little scared if you grab his collar and will sit down and shake his head hard to get you to let go. For this reason he is walked on a harness. He walks great and when you stop walking he sits at your side. Jack did well at the groomers while getting his bath and nails clipped. And Ernie is Jacks' buddy. Ernie is roughly 5 years old and believed to be a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix but I would say he leans heavily towards the Chihuahua side. He has never met a toy that he doesn't like and could spend all day playing ball. He is just a very happy-go-lucky kind of dog. He's very friendly and he loves his friend Jack. Ernie is not a fan of tile floors but is slowly warming up to them so don't be alarmed if he refuses to walk on tile or hardwoods at first. Ernie does well getting his nails clipped but the quick is very long on his nails so his nails tend to always look a little longer than other dogs. He loves children as well and if allowed he will spend most of his time with kids either playing with them or laying on their bed with them. He loves to be petted and will jump into your lap but occasionally will try to jump up and kiss you. He thinks hands are toys and does tend to get a little playful nippy but responds well to verbal correction. Ernie loves playing with his foster sister who is a German Shepherd Husky mix. He holds his own quite well. Both dogs are crate trained and eat in their kennels otherwise Jack will eat Ernie's food. They would do best in a home without cats.     He looks like the real deal, but he is half the size! This is Mickey, a Mini Australian Cattledog. This little guy is 1 year old and weighs about 20 pounds. Mickey is ready for a home that wants to give him some basic training and exercise. He hasn't had a chance to learn about the leash or any of his basic commands, but he is ready and willing.     Say 'hi' to Ted... quietly, he nervous! Ted has been here a while now, but oh, the progress! Looking normal much of the time now. Follows you everywhere off leash. Routine oriented. He's blowing me away. Longest I have ever had a foster, but the things he's taught me are invaluable! He's about 2, Queensland / Catahoula combo. Beautiful guy, one blue eye. Ted came here with his sister/mother, who knows, Tessa from the small Orange Cove Shelter, in July 2014. Sometimes I wish I knew a dog's story. How could they be SO shut down?! Ted was one of those dogs. He's fearful and under socialized. Been working with him, and experience has proven ... (Read More)that they are all reachable. The kind of progress I'm grateful for, he now instigates play with dogs, loves sleeping on a dog bed inside and knows how to navigate the dog door, and is housebroken. He's not terrified of me anymore! Eats grass on walks... walks on a leash. I can pet him... I'm tellin' ya, it's the little things that are enormous with some of these guys! Now when we walk, Ted is so close he bumps into the back of my legs, and I feel his breath on the back of my hand... Ted just needs a special adopter, one who might understand Ted is special. He could just be left alone to exist, but I would love to see him with someone that would touch him every day, take him on walks, expose him to things. This is when I've seen the most improvements. Exposure to everything! Immersion. Was a huge deal to even force him to sleep in a dog bed next to me! Once he did for a few days, he expected it! Routine is key! Dogs are incredible, you can reach them through routine. Still working and he has all the time he needs...     Meet Miss Minnie Pearl, a real pearl of a girl. She is a 4 year old pixie, weighing 29 pounds, and full of love with her long, cattledog tail. Don't let her smaller stature fool you. She is ready for an active home. Minnie is looking for a person who appreciates her love of fetching and will join in the fun. In fact, one could call Minnie a toy hoarder. She takes very good care of them and does not pull the stuffing out of her toys like some dogs do. She has been known to carry a toy with her around the house, holding it in her mouth as she walks along. Minnie Pearl currently lives with other dogs and likes them. Like all ladies, she ... (Read More)simply prefers a polite introduction upon meeting. With a few dogs, she will even play. A submissive or neutral dog would be a lovely companion for her. Miss Minnie Pearl is a very polite girl. She knows sit, wait, and off. She also walks nicely on a leash and rides politely in the car. She is ready for a person who wants to go places and take her along. Minnis is a sponge when it comes to learning. She is very interested in learning and would really blossom with additional training or even someone who wants to take her to flyball or agility. Minnie really focuses on her person. She is ready to make a deep bond and be someone's very best pal. That said, with her activity level, Minnie is not a fit for a home with kids under junior high age. Minnie is a lovely house pal. She is house trained and, if you ask, will go into her crate where she remains quietly until it is time to get out.     Rain 'found' us Aug. '15. For a week, whenever she caught sight of us she'd run and hide. She came to trust us, wag her tail, and gained a good amount of weight. She initially blended into our 'pack' of a male Boxer and a female Pitt mix while we looked for her owner(s). We made mistakes -- being naive about the attention needs and energy levels of not only her breed (we're going by 'looks' for breed) but of our two 'home dogs'. We did not 'drain' Rain's energy sufficiently to maintain balance in the 'pack'. Rain and the Pitt mix can not be alone with one another as they have fought. She does well with the Boxer. It's unclear if it's ... (Read More)because of being male or because of his non-alpha temperament. She has also played well with a male lab on a few occasions. We know she has growled and snarled at visitors, but it's also unclear if that comes from insecurity or from some negative experience she's had. Bottom line: We're sorry we can not keep her. If we didn't have two 'high energy' dogs, or just the Boxer, we DEFINITELY would keep Rain. We want her to find a safe, caring, balanced 'pack leader' who understands (better than we did) the need for exercise for her breed. Rain needs 'a job'. Our 'pack' needs stability returned. She rides EXTREMELY well in the cars. She tethers well when needed. Walks fairly well on lead. Comes when called better than any other dog we've had. She is SWEET and BRIGHT. Rain is a great little dog. (Less)

Just like with people, he does best when his animal friends aren't pushovers. In order to help Fin be the best he can be, he has been enrolled in professional training where his obedience skills have been refined. He has received additional socialization with dogs and people, too. He will always be a one or two person kind of dog rather than the super social, love everyone kind of guy. If you want devoted, he is definitely that. HIs foster mom says that he has a way of becoming a part of your heart, so even with his need for structure, he is well worth it. He will come with a few sessions of training with his new person and current trainer so that his transition to a new home is smooth and effective. The training is included in his adoption fee. Fin is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to local rescues. Fin is a SoCal kind of guy and loves the weather here. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Australian Cattle Dogs have strong herding instincts and behave best when they have plenty of space and a job to do. lnteresting Australian Cattle Dog Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Cattle Dogs were bred by 19th century Australian pioneers to herd cattle on large ranches. The Australian Cattle Dog nips at a cow's heels to keep it in line with the herd, and may apply this technique to its humans from time to time as well.
