Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Deaf

Meet Gavin! Gavin is a gorgeous, friendly and dog social 1 year old Cattle Dog/Lab mix from the San Bernadino City Shelter. Gavin is one lucky boy to be here at Central Coast Herding Dog Rescue, it took a village to get him here, but he is a great dog and totally worth the trouble! No one knew this handsome boy was deaf prior to his arrival, but he's such a great pup, we know someone special is going to want to add him to their family. Took us a minute to figure out that Gavin is deaf. This boy is so people oriented and likes to keep you happy, in one day he has already learned the hand signals for 'sit' and 'come.' He's exceptionally ... (Read More)smart, so we he will be trained on hand signals quickly! Gavin enjoys the company of both people and dogs. He bonds quickly with people and would probably do best with someone who is home a lot, or at least has another dog to keep him company. He's 100% dog social. He likes to play and romp around (as we first saw him do with his transporter's 12 lbs. terrier). Gavin is a special dog, ready to bring lots of joy to some lucky household. Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Meet Sammy and his happy smile! Sammy is a 12-14 year old, neutered male Queensland heeler who needs a new home. He was beloved by his elderly owners, who have both been moved into a nursing home. Sammy loves people and needs a new mom or dad who he can completely devote himself to. In typical heeler fashion--he just wants to be a 'velcro dog' and follow his person from room to room to keep them company. He was raised in a home without children or other pets. He is unsocialized with other dogs--he is not aggressive, but he needs to be in a one-dog household because he never learned how to follow the rules of a pack and his current owner must ... (Read More)give him up because of this. He is housebroken, crate trained, and is well behaved (knows sit, stay, come). He currently lives on a farm with livestock and has never tried to chase them, but once when he was younger he did chase a cat. However, he does not appear to have a strong hunting instinct. He is very healthy and is up to date on all his shots. He doesn't dig, but he does have separation anxiety and his current owner says he barks when left home alone. As an older gent, he is pretty mellow, but still needs some outdoor play time. Sammy needs a loving human to give him a new home for the rest of his life. Just look at that smile! (Less)

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Wyatt (Black and Tan Queensland Heeler) is 3.5 years old and weighs about 45 lbs. He was adopted by us as a rescue dog from the South Bay Purebred Rescue at 8 weeks old. He is our smartest dog and is well trained and loves to please his people too. He needs the same type of family...one where he will be exercised, played with and mentally stimulated a lot. He does ok with other dogs but tends to try and be Alpha until a true Alpha dog is present, and then he seems to submit. Wyatt is also an amazing dog and companion and extremely smart...he learns things with only one or two times of telling him. He is gentle and kind and with the ... (Read More)right people who will give him the time and exercise he needs, he will thrive. Wyatt chases cats for the same reason as Duke. He is very gentle with small children. Wyatt loves the beach, loves to play ball or fetch of any kind and consistently brings the toy back and is very patient and will wait for commands. He knows all commands and will sit, stay, and 'go to his couch', or 'go to bed', load up in a vehicle, come when called, and will not eat his food unless instructed to do so. Wyatt is more food driven but also is a people pleaser. Wyatt is neutered and up to date on all vaccines and receives monthly doses of Frontline and Heartguard. Wyatt is located in Prunedale, California. If you are interested in Wyatt, please contact Michelle DiTullio at ditullioma@gmail.com. (Less)

Duke (Black and White Queensland Heeler - one blue eye and one brown eye) is 7 years old, weighs about 45 lbs, and was adopted by us at 6 months from Animal Rescue of Tracy. He has been an amazing and wonderful dog and loves his people and loves other dogs. He tends to chase cats as we do not have any as pets. Duke would benefit from being in a home with other dogs and OR with people who will spend a lot of time with him. He is definitely a companion dog and likes to follow his people around wherever they go. Duke is wonderful and gentle with small children.     This adorable Queensland Heeler mix seems to have been dumped in our neighborhood. He showed up overnight; he has no microchip, and we've checked the 'lost' notices to no avail. We got him up-to-date on his vaccinations; he still needs to be neutered. We have two dogs already (one of whom is jealous of this little guy being around), so we need to help him find a good home. We've temporarily named him Thor. He gets along with our male dogs and with us - an adult man and woman. He did chase our cat, and she hasn't given him another chance to see if he'd behave with her. He really enjoys going for a walk and does well even off-leash ... (Read More)- sticking with us and coming back when called. Around the house he likes to follow his favorite person from room-to-room, then lay near their feet and just chill out. He likes to be petted and give occasional little non-slobbery kisses. Animal ID: RivRed2yFemaleMamasita (female)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected,
 Fearful/Anxious

Mamasita is a petite red Australian Cattle Dog. She was saved in her last hour before she was to be euthanized due to shelter deeming her 'not adoptable due to extremely fearful.' She has healed from some abscessed wounds on her hip and around her tail she had along with some bug bites and puncture wounds. When we saved her it appeared she had recently had puppies and that was not her first or second litter. She is awesome on leash - is auto-heel/epoxy velcrodog in areas where she feels safe and enjoys being a lap dog. Now an indoor dog, housetrained with a doggy door, very very quiet (not barky at all). Rides in the car quietly - prefers ... (Read More)the back seat. Gives great paw, has the cutest little paws! Comes running to a whistle and calling her nickname. Going with her foster mom to the pet store and Home Depot/Lowes etc is a new activity that is still very scary but she is really coming along. When she is unsure some words of confidence and some treats let her know she is making the right decisions and is a good girl. Still quite fearful around strangers, she warms up if you let her come to investigate the stranger on her own and will eventually give paw and sometimes a kiss. It helps if the stranger is handing her yummy treats! She is fine around the other dogs that aren't playful at her foster home- 13 yr female lab, 5 yr male ACD, 12 yr male ACD- and will be learning the younger dogs are ok to be around also. She is really blossoming into a very nice little red dog! (The picture is after sitting on the ground with her in front of the shelter for 45 minutes and just letting her decompress and letting her be and tossing a few random yummy treats - no pressure to do anything but relax and learn her foster mom is a safe place. She is best in a quieter home with older children. Her activity level is medium- low but she does get the happy zoomies when out for a walk around her property or a short jog with her foster mom. Such a happy girl! More pictures will be posted soon on Facebook - ACDRescueArmy and http://www.ACDRescueArmy.weebly.com (Less)

[Read About Natural Incontinence Care] We love Didi so much! She's sweet and cuddly - a real lover - but then also very energetic and playful... the dog of our dreams.. But we don't know what to do - we adopted her last week from North Central LA Animal Shelter and a few days later she suffered a partial rectal prolapse.. We took her in and got her stitched up, but today (5 days later) she has prolapsed again and will likely need surgery.. the bills have become more than we can handle and are not sure what to do. if there is someone out there who can her give the love and care she needs better than we can, we would give her up... though we ...     Holly is one of the sweetest dogs we have ever known. However, she is the Alpha Female and she likes what she knows. She is super protective and only trusts those she has spent a lot of time with. Holly has become defensive and aggressive in certain situations, and with a child on the way, we will be unable to trust her with visitors/nanny or our child. We have tried training and advice from a certified trainer but we are not capable of supplying her with the 'work' that she needs. Recently Holly has been asked to not return to her day care as there are only a couple of attendants who she responds appropriately to. Holly is super smart, ... (Read More)picking up any tricks with 'click/treat' training. She LOVES playing Frisbee, cuddling on the couch, and being close to her owners. This being our first dog, we did not know what we were getting into with this Queensland Heeler & Lab mix. We are hoping that she will do better where she can run around most of the day on some land, perhaps a farm. Holly does best with adults and we feel that a couple who can spend most of the day with her would be the best fit. Dog lovers that know the personalities of heelers are a must! We are not experts with Dogs at all, but will be willing to have detailed conversations with anyone interested in helping Holly live a long and happy life. Please Help find a home for Holly.     My husband took in this stray he found, in hopes of rehoming him but we have been unable to. We think he was abused before, but he is very sweet and gentle. He gets along with all of our dogs except for one so we've kept them separated completely. He's been friendly to all family, friends and kids who have come to our house. He can open certain door handles so it's better if you have round ones if you ever intend on putting him alone in a room. He loves to go for walks but isn't well trained on a harness.     Tulsa is a wonderful, athletic, and smart companion who loves her people as well as walks. Although she just turned 9, she shows no signs of slowing down, and loves to run around outside, play tug, or do tricks such as jumping through a hoop or over a stick. We adopted Tulsa 8 years ago from a rescue organization, and have had great adventures with her, including two cross-country moves. Unfortunately, we have a one-year-old baby and have not been able to make Tulsa's high energy compatible with our child's high energy, while still giving Tulsa the active lifestyle and loving attention she deserves. Tulsa is a wonderful dog, but needs ... (Read More)boundaries, as she had some aggression problems (primarily with other dogs, but with some strangers who tried to approach her) when she was about 3 years old. She does okay with some male dominant dogs, but not well with female dogs or small dogs. She has calmed down quite a bit over the years, and loves going on runs, hikes, or just cuddling on the couch with her people. She knows her commands (sit, stay, lie down, heel, shake, jump, roll over, pretty) and you can even train her to go potty in a specific area. She is crate trained and loves her crate. She has had no health problems and still has quite a bit of energy. She loves runs, but she is fine as long as she gets walks every day. Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Katie is a beautiful 2.5 - 3.5 year old German Pointer and Blue Heeler mix. She is a medium-sized dog, who is currently overweight at 60lbs, but should weigh about 50lbs when at a healthy weight. She is current on all vaccinations. Katie should not be around children (approximately under 13 years), should not be around cats, and should not be around small dogs. She would do well with another dog if she has a slow introduction - she is not the kind of dog who can run up to a strange dog and be happy, and she shows signs of aggression to new dogs. When meeting new people, Katie may bark and be fearful. If given a treat, she commits to ... (Read More)loving the new person. Katie is also fearful of quick movements and loud sounds (i.e. semi-trucks scare her a lot) She is a very, very smart dog and all of these problems could be easily addressed with some training. Here is the story of Katie: I went to the pound last October looking for a dog who would fit my lifestyle. After looking at many dogs, I walked passed her cage. She was curled up in the back of her cage and clearly depressed; she had no desire to see people. I walked by her cage again and she picked up her head a little and wagged her tail a little. I had the staff take her out of that cage, and met with her. That's when I learned that she had been transferred to this pound by a local high-kill shelter because her time there was up. And, she had been at this pound for a week and had gotten no attention - everyone seemed to walk right passed her. I asked the staff why this may be and they told me she was an 'undesirable' breed. Well, I had fallen in love. I was told she had just been spayed and would be fully recovered in three days, and right then and there, she came home with me! When I got home, I realized it was a very good thing she had gotten out of that pound - her spay wound was infected, open, and causing her to throw up from licking it. I took her to the vet ASAP, where I learned that she was allergic to stiches. And she had several more complications with the wound; it ended up taking about 5 months for her to fully recovery. Well, after she finally recovered, she became a totally different dog - happy, loving, joyful, and playful - everything a dog should be! But I realized I made a mistake, because she could never be happy living in the tiny apartment I rented. She deserves a family who has more time for her and a yard. With a little training, she could be the most lovable and wonderful dog anyone could ever want. She is so amazing and I wish I could keep her because I love her, but I know she will be much happier in a home more suited for her. So to all you dog lovers out there, please consider giving Katie a new home! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-07-21-00567Sutter (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Sutter is a true gentleman dog! He is a 7+ yr. old neutered male Catahoula and cattle dog mix. He is about as gentle and mellow a dog as you will ever find. He weighs 59 lbs. and is a low-medium energy dog. Sutter is not a dog that makes a lot of noise or announces himself to the world. He sits quietly, listens for direction, and hopes that someone, sometime, will see what a sweet dog he is. Sutter appears to be completely house trained - and crate trained, walking right into a crate with his hot dog treat. He is very easy to walk on leash. Sutter enjoys exploring in the yard. He has a very soft mouth and uses his tongue rather than his ... (Read More)teeth to take a treat. He gets along well with other dogs. He meets other dogs politely. When first meeting other dogs, if the other dog is energetically in his face, Sutter may grumble, or take a superior position over the dog to get it be less eager or less busy around him. After the introductions, Sutter is relaxed and enjoys the company of the other dog(s). At his short term foster home, he was fine and happy living with the dominant old female, the ball-crazy young male, and the insecure adult male dog. He is currently being fostered with a playful cattle dog, and when hanging out together, the two will lick each other's faces. At his current foster home, Sutter was interested in a bossy cat, who swatted at him several times. He wasn't happy with the cat, but merely barked his displeasure a few times to the aggressive cat - while keeping his distance. Until we rescued Sutter on July 19th, for the past 4 months, he had been living in a cage at the shelter. He was placed on the euthanasia list, and the volunteers, who all loved him, were frantically searching for a rescue to take him. He is a wonderful, easy going, boy, who is just happy to be with you and go for a nice walk. He will make someone a terrific, low maintenance companion. If you are interested in adopting Sutter, please complete our online adoption questionnaire. It provides us with your contact information, tells us a little about your situation and pet experience, and is part of our pre-approval process. You will find it on our website(hittgv.org), under the 'Adopt' tab, near the top of the page. Scroll down the page for the beginning of the form. Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

Nakota is a wonderful dog who needs a little more structure in his life when meeting new people. He gets worried living on a horse boarding facility because of all the activity. I rescued him from a man who was keeping him crated 22 out of 24 hours of the day. He bonds very strongly with his 'family' and welcomes outsiders after meeting them a few times. He is NEVER aggressive but does get nervous around strangers the first few times. Kota knows all of his basic commands and is learning more advanced commands because he is starting agility training. He walks on a loose leash with just a regular collar. He will follow you on horseback to go ... (Read More)trail riding. He gets along with EVERY dog on the face of this earth and has NO interest in chasing/killing/eating anything.. even tasty looking rabbits. He does excellent off-leash as well and will follow you on a bike, golf cart, quad etc. He rides in the car/truck like a champ.. gets in and immediately curls up and goes to sleep. He loves swimming, hiking, playing fetch (he brings the ball or stick back and drops it on command. He wont touch it while it's in your hand either), going to the dog park, going to the beach, and anything that involves exercise. He loves kids as well! Please understand his need for exercise. He is not a couch potato. He would be great for someone wanting an agility or fly-ball dog after he gains some confidence. Please have experience training a dog with nervousness around people (no touch, no talk, no eye contact). He is a really cool dog and needs an equally cool, fun, adventurous owner. If at any point you can not keep him for any reason, he will be returned to me. Please be SERIOUS about adopting him before you contact me! No one likes their time wasted, and neither do I. Prepare to drive to SOLVANG CA. This will not work if you live 3 states away and are not prepared to drive that far for a dog. Kota is approximately 4-5 years old and he is for an EXPERIENCED dog owner. (Less)

I have this dog almost 6 months, so he is probably at least 2 years old, from what the vet figures. I had him fixed and current vaccines because I have 2 dogs. I am an animal lover so I tried to fit him in here. I just do t have the time to work with him. He is high energy, unlike my dogs. He wants to play or be with a companion. He is a good watch dog. I need to find him a suitable home. I have cats also. He doesn't hurt them, but he barks and lunges at them in the window. My home is just not the place for him. I don't want to have to take him to a shelter so I am hoping he finds a home here.

Fargo is looking for an awesome home! Sweet boy - waggerific tail. Brings you his toys to throw for him. Takes treats gently. Dances for booty scratches. Gives kisses on the first date. Uses a doggy door. Walks on leash very nice. Wants to be your lap dog. Loves to play with hose water/sprinklers. Is used to being an inside dog with outside access to a backyard through a doggy door and sleeping with his person. He quickly warms up to nice adult strangers that let him come to them for treats, older children that have been taught how to interact with and treat dogs properly are ok but we would advise against younger children (or any that ... (Read More)run around and scream). He is fine hanging out with dogs after a slow introduction with rewards for good behavior but he's not ready to play chuckit with a group of dogs yet. His owner is unable to care for him any longer due to declining health but would like to keep in touch and get updates on how he is. His owner made a very difficult decision in the best interest of Fargo's future. Fargo is a great swimmer but would prefer to stay on land (we tried dock jumping). He loves lure coursing and Barn Hunt and fetching his ball. He can find all the balls other dogs have lost. (Less)

Meet Ranger. This handsome speckled boy is a 8 year old Australian Cattle Dog/Lab mix. Abandoned by his owner, he was saved by a good samaritan who helped to find a rescue for him. He is now looking for his forever home. Ranger is a healthy 79 pounds of speckles and wagging tail. He is good with other dogs, even little dogs, and sometimes wants to play. He also enjoys a good game of tag with his person, barking for more when you stop. He has the right amount of energy to be a nice walking companion. He will ask for your attention, too, if you are ignoring him. He very much wants to interact with his person. Ranger appreciates having his ... (Read More)rear end scratched just at the base of the tail. Some nice scratching and some dog cookies and this guy is your pal. Ranger walks nicely on a leash and rides politely in the car. He hasn't shown any food aggression and generally takes his treats gently. Ranger has already learned 'sit' and other basic obedience commands. He is currently attending public obedience classes and doing very well. He also enjoys regular walks. Ranger isn't a fan of being brushed. This and an interest in taking goodies off of the counter appear to be his only faults. Ideally, Ranger would get a home with a large, fenced yard. He loves to run around, especially if his people will run around in the yard with him. He seems to have low prey drive since he isn't interested in squirrels. That means that cats are probably just find in Ranger's company. He is house trained, uses the dog for, and settles nicely when invited in. Ranger is neutered, up to date on shots, and microchipped. He is ready for his home. Because of his size, toddlers and small kids are not a fit for him. Older kids are fine. A vet reference, personal references, and home visit are required as part of the adoption process. Send an e-mail and an adoption application will be sent to you to begin the process. Ranger is being fostered in Simi Valley. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting an Australian Cattle Dog in California
Australian Cattle Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. The Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most intelligent dog breeds, needing a lot of attention to stave off boredom. A neglected Australian Cattle Dog can become destructive. Australian Cattle Dogs have strong herding instincts and behave best when they have plenty of space and a job to do. Australian Cattle Dogs are well suited to farms and homes with large yards; they do not do well confined to an apartment or other small space. Australian Cattle Dogs are loyal and very obedient with attentive training. An Australian Cattle Dog tends not to do well with children unless it has known them since it was a puppy. Australian Cattle Dogs may be very close to their masters and reluctant to accept other people.
