Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults

Orchid is a three year old female Australian Cattle Dog. She is spayed and UTD on shots. She is great with kids and listens very well. Fully potty trained and asks for the door. No fault of her own, the other female in the house keeps attacking her and after many attempts to try and get them to get along the resident heeler isn't having it.

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

He's about 2 years old. Australian Cattle dog mix. I'm thinking part Lab. Larry was in the Hesperia Shelter. 'Stray'... I doubt it. Larry is a very nice and attentive dog... I just don;t think he's a wanderer, but he was not neutered until the other day, so it's possible he followed his nose... He obviously didn't have much experience with travel. Raeanne said he buried his head in the back seat of her car on his freedom ride! While the older gal, and the female pup were enjoying their travel! He did man up for his flight though! Was fantastic, and even easier when I put him in my van for the final leg home. Very sweet and balanced dog. ... (Read More)Larry is not even phased by being in this new place, cage free, and a bunch of other un-phased dogs. He fits! Larry can use some weight on him. I hear he was emaciated upon intake. Raeanne fattened him up some, but I'll keep working on that. He's kicking back with mostly males dogs and a couple females. So chill. Quiet, unassuming. I love Larry!     Ranger is a very well behaved dog when he is with adults. I have a seven year boy who is very hyper and ranger does not do good around him. So he must be in a household with no young children. He also does not do well with small animals however we have a hound mix and the two of them get along great. So he may be okay in a house with a larger dog.

My sweet Queensland Heeler needs a new home. She is 1.5 yrs, spayed, up-to-date vaccinations/Heartguard. She knows basic commands, lives inside (w/outside access) and is very affectionate and playful. She is easy to train, but definitely needs 'jobs' to do. She needs somebody who has the time and energy to dedicate to training and keeping her busy. She cannot go to a home with small animals or children as she does not do well with either. Small re-homing fee to ensure serious inquiries.

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Pilot is a very mellow, easy going guy in all situations, with all people and animals. We estimate that he is around 3 years old, and weighs 43-45 lbs. He appears to be a cattle dog, border collie mix, with some bull terrier thrown in. Pilot seems very careful and hesitant in new situations, and while he is quiet and gentle, he is also happy and social (once he has had time to know everyone is ok). We have only had Pilot for a few days. So far, he seems to be a moderate energy dog, who is very content to just sit beside or go for a walk with his person. He is an extremely observant and highly intelligent dog, who quietly watches and ... (Read More)evaluates everything around him. Although Pilot seems initially more comfortable when meeting women, than strange men, with a quiet, slow introduction, and some time to observe new people, he will warm up. Within an hour or so, he took to his foster dad, and having the velcro nature of a cattle dog, now follows him around whenever possible. Pilot is fine when left alone. When his foster dad returns home, although Pilot has the company of other dogs, he is excited and happy, coming up to lick his foster dad's hand, and running around in glee. Pilot demonstrates excellent body language around other dogs. While curious about other dogs, if he is unsure of new dogs who look at or approach him quickly, he will turn his head away to avoid their gaze, letting them know he is not a threat. He may hide behind the legs of his person if strange dogs quickly approach him to meet. It may take him several minutes to feel comfortable enough to return a sniff and slowly begin to interact with new dogs or people. Once he feels secure in a situation and with other dogs or people, he is happy, curious and interactive. He met and shown no interest in his foster's cat, and is doing fine living with several other dogs. His foster home has several dogs, Pilot especially likes an older, male, border collie. When the two get back together, after being away from each other, Pilot will run up to his border collie buddy, lick his face, follow him around, and make a gentle nuisance of himself. As Pilot becomes more comfortable, we should see more of his personality emerge. We have seen flashes of his true nature. He does enjoy playing ball, and seems to have a sense of humor! When being introduced to other dogs at his foster home, Pilot and I sat side by side in a room with exercise equipment. We both saw a tall mirror against the wall. I saw him looking into the mirror. I did a double-take, when I realized that he wasn't staring at himself, but was instead looking at me. As we sat facing the mirror, looking straight into each other's eyes, he had an amused smile on his face, as if he thought watching each other in the mirror was the coolest thing ever. Pilot is a very easy going and compliant guy. When his foster dad calls him, Pilot wags his stumpy tail. He also likes being brushed or petted. Pilot was still and sat quietly in the tub for his bath. When walking on leash he will follow your lead and never pulls. Even if he is reluctant to go where you are leading him, if he knows you, he will follow. Pilot also rides extremely well in a car, and sits very quietly in the back seat. He enjoys facing the window and watching the world go by. He seems to be housebroken and knows how to use a dog door. At bedtime, if you let him, he would love to sleep with you. Our boy also does something that may be a request for attention or support. When sitting with you, he will slowly lift up and offer you a front paw, while looking away from you. When he first came off of transport to us, Pilot seemed very apprehensive. To allow him to de-stress, I spent nearly 45 minutes sitting in the shade with him in a quiet area. He was so still and quiet, yet when he heard voices of passing families, he would perk up and strain to see them, and watch them intently until they disappeared. We are seeking people who can give Pilot the companionship, security, confidence, and loving happy, active life that he deserves. He is a brilliantly intelligent dog, who needs TLC, and people who will be his partners in life. If you are interested in meeting Pilot, we ask that you first complete our adoption questionnaire (online form or download a hard copy), which is the first step of our pre-adoption process. At our website (hittgv.org), please click on the Adopt tab near the top of the page, and scroll down to find the online Adoption Form. You can also email us at doghouse@hittgv.org if you have specific questions about Pilot or our process. (Less)

This beautiful pup has arrived. Good thing...you could see the stress on her face. She's decompressed now! Duchess is so balanced, she's already having fun! Pack walks, no problemo! She hops in and out of the van on command. No need for a leash either. I started her on one dragging, ... (Read More)she started to head away from me, didn't know her name yet, so I blasted my coaches whistle, the universal 'Come Here!' and she did. She always came when I called her after that. No need for that dragging leash. Duchess Loves the water and will dive in and go swimming on her own. It was so cool to see her having fun. We hiked around in the hills too. She loves nature. Duchess is polite in the yard and the house. She is not a barker. And knows how to use a dog door. She sleeps outside or in a kuranda bed inside if she wants to. I don't think she can believe where she has been transported to! And the best is yet to come, a home of her own is an attainable goal! Interested in meeting Duchess?     Magnus is a real Australian Cattledog ready for a real home, a home where his handsome, rugged good looks, full tail, and Cattledog quirks are appreciated. Magnus is 3 years old and weighs about 45 pounds. He found himself in jail and was pulled to safety just in the nick of time. Fortunately, he found himself in a Cattledog foster home where his charming personality has started to blossom. Magnus isn't just a handsome boy. He is smart, too. He knows sit, wait, shake, and is perfecting down. As a bit of a renaissance man, he is ready and able to learn more. Magnus is also polite in the house. He is house trained. He is good with most ... (Read More)dogs. He has been cautious around the cat, but what smart guy wouldn't be? Magnus appreciates adventure. He is good in the car and walks politely on leash. He would appreciate a good hike or something else equally outdoorsy. He shows interest in the ball and thinks that a good game of tug is fantastic. Magnus isn't a total tough guy. He is a great cuddler. He loves to snuggle and even sings a few tunes from time to time. However, he is definitely a Cattledog, so no small kids. He would appreciate a home who knows likes a few quirks. Magnus is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. He is ready for a forever home in Southern California. Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

How did such a pretty girl end up in the shelter? Bindi isn't sure and isn't letting that slow her down. This girl is a 6 month old Australian Cattledog looking for an active home. Bindi is a very friendly girl. She is a nice girl in her foster home, being polite with her foster siblings who are cats and dogs. She also enjoys time at doggy daycare where she burns off that puppy energy. She has also seen horses and seemed curious, but didn't seem concerned about them. Bindi is an active girl and is all puppy. She would love a home that is active and ready to keep her learning. She is good with men, women, and kids. However, because she is ... (Read More)an active cattledog and is a little bit of a nibbler, we don't think she would be a good fit with small kids. Bindi has those Cattledog smarts. She is quick to learn and very loyal. She is already housebroken. She is doing well in her crate and never cries. She sleeps through the night. She is also pretty quiet, though she does get excited when playing with other dogs and will get talkative then. Mostly, she really enjoys learning and wants to keep her mind active. Bindi would love to burn off some energy with an active person. She likes to play tug. She would appreciate jogging, hiking, or similar activities. She also LOVES water! She loves to splash around in her a kiddie pool and running through puddles. Bindi is spayed, current on her vaccinations, microchipped, and ready for her forever home. She is available for adoption in Southern CA. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

She is happiest around 'family', since she's a shy and anxious girl and being surrounded by new people is stressful for her. When she's feeling stressed or scared, Bella likes to seek out cozy tight spaces and will also bark when strangers ... (Read More)are around to protect her home and family, but she NEVER bites. She plays well with other dogs but has never spent much time with children. Her current owner is recently divorced and travels extensively for work in addition to being in school part-time, so Bella is home alone or boarded often and isn't getting the love and attention she needs and deserves.     This darling little spitfire is Nettie. She was born on April 3, 2016, and weighs 18 pounds as of July 1. Nettie is a fearless charmer. She will push you along via the back of your legs. This girl shows the mouthy tendencies of the breed and will be adored by someone who knows and loves Cattledogs. She is also a smart girl, so has also made good progress learning to redirect her mouthiness. She is great with my older dog (always wants to play) but will chase cats. She will need a secure yard to keep her safe. She would not be good with small children only because she gets excited and may knock them down. She's not mean or aggressive at all. We just don't have a job for her.     Hi! I am Duke! I am a pure-bred Australian Cattle Dog, am about two years old, and weigh about 55 pounds. I am told that I have perfect markings - I don't know what that means but people say I am a beautiful dog! I am an energetic boy that loves to play: I love to fetch balls, play with toys that make noise, and go for walks. I will fetch or play for as long as I can get someone to play with me. Belly rubs are pretty amazing too! I am very smart and know many commands such as sit, down, stay and drop when I have a ball. I love learning new things and I am learning to shake and to get my leash when I want to go for a walk. I am looking for a ...     We have been fostering Bella, a beautiful and affectionate two-year-old Australian cattle dog mix. She came to us from the San Francisco SPCA who brought her into the city from Stockton. Bella is alternately bored and over-stimulated by the demands of city life. She does better in a suburban environment, but will really thrive on a ranch or farm where she can be free to run and have the responsibility of patrolling a large area to keep its inhabitants safe from harm and gophers. Bella will do well in a home where there are people or animals to watch over. She is very protective and will bark aggressively at perceived threats, though she ... We will miss Bella terribly, but will love to see her thriving in a safe place where she can have a job and get the exercise she needs. Bella is spayed, house-broken, trained on the basics, microchipped, and up-to-date on all shots including optional leptospirosis. $150 rehoming fee includes: Collar, Leash, and no-pull harness Heartgard and Nexgard for next 4 months Food and treats Her bed and a few of her favorite toys (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-06-14-00740Koi (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Good/Great: Koi is an obedient loving animal. He follows commands such as: sit, stay, down, off, paw, roll over. He's house trained and managed to live in a 2 bedroom apartment over the last 2 years (he's 3 years old, the first year he lived in a house with a back yard). He loves to play fetch and if given the opportunity would do this all day. Walks very well on a leash with an occasional tug if he sees a cat or squirrel. He can jog well on a leash. He's never destroyed any of our belongings or our property, he sticks to chewing his own toys and will de-fluff any stuffed animal toy. He's been kind and patient with our 1.5 year old son. He ... (Read More)lets us know when he needs to go outside by coming up to us and staring us down. He rarely barks indoors, unless someone comes to the door (he will bark two-three times). He loves people once he gets to know them and can trust them. Bad: Koi has fearful anxiety initially with strangers that are not part of the 'pack' (that includes small children/toddlers and adults). This usually manifests as excessive barking when someone new initially walks in. We've addressed this by keeping him in a separate area where he can see and smell the stranger while he watches us interact with him/her. After about 5-10 minutes we let him back in and all he wants to do is play fetch. He has over the last 8 months sporadically lunged at strangers while we walk him and so we've resorted to putting a mussel on him when we take him on walks since this lunging is random and he doesn't show any warning signs or anxiety that we can see. He also has some fearful aggression towards unknown dogs. When Koi was about 8 month old we took him to a dog park where a pack of dogs all came to greet him too suddenly and corralled him into a corner with a couple of dogs lunging towards him. Since then, he's just become more and more anxious towards new dogs. Also we think because we've been less able to exercise him, this aggression/anxiety has worsened. It's strange because we also have a small fluffy dog whom he is very sweet and respectful towards. He's never bitten or or shown food, toy or bedding aggression towards her either. We unfortunately do not know people with stable dogs who we could work with to introduce Koi and help him work through this fear. In short, he needs daily exercise and someone who is willing to work with him with his stranger and dog anxiety. Ideally also a household with no children or at least an owner who is mindful about small children and toddlers and will put Koi away or remove him from this situation. Ugly: Over the last 2 months, Koi has managed to bite two separate people. In one situation, shortly before we placed the mussel, he was calmly sitting by my side when a strange woman came and started talking to our toddler. Our smaller dog began howling and barking at her. The woman then proceeded to pet our small dog which our small dog allowed. After our small dog stopped barking and the woman and I were making small talk, I moved my body slightly towards her and Koi lunged grabbing her arm. He didn't puncture skin but he did manage to bruise her arm. This is when we decided that his random lunging had gone too far and bought a mussel which we use when we walk with him. More recently, he also happened to lunge at a young 4 year old girl. At the time he was under the care of someone else who'd been exercising him daily for about 1 week. He had just come back from a 3 mile hike. He was sitting outside in the front lawn with some other adults, a neighbor came back with his daughter and not anticipating a reaction, this caregiver allowed the little girl to approach Koi too quickly or suddenly at which point he lunged towards the little girl and this time punctured the skin on her forearm. Again, Koi just doesn't trust strangers that easily. We're unsure where this insecurity comes from as we've never abused him or put him in a situation where he needed to show that he needed to defend himself with this kind of fearful aggression. There's no fees and we will give you all his belongings, vet records, including 5 months worth of flea/tick/worm prevention meds. We LOVE this dog and don't wish to euthanize him as he's an amazing and wonderful companion to our family (we've considered euthanasia if we cannot find another loving and patient home for him). But we just don't have the time and resources to work with him and his anxiety. Our work schedules sometimes keep us away from home for up to 10 hours during the workweek leaving only myself or my husband with two dogs and a toddler. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-06-14-00162Jack and Ernie (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

These two boys are devoted friends. For this reason we want to adopt them to a home that will welcome them together. Jack is a 6-7 year old Australian Cattle Dog. He's very shy at first but once he's comfortable he is very friendly and loyal and loving. Wherever you are you will find him as your shadow. He's housebroken and gets along well with other dogs once he's warmed up to them. He tends to do better with little dogs and dogs close to his size. He's never met a treat he didn't like and is very eager to learn and makes great eye contact when being talked to. He's not a big fan of balls or squeaky toys but he does like stuffing free ... (Read More)animals. He's a very sweet dog who is happiest being by your side. His absolute favorite thing to do is lay on the ground then flip over and rub his back while kicking his legs in the air. He loves children and if he feels there is something wrong he checks up on them and gives kisses to make them feel better. Jack will panic a little if you tug on his collar. I'm not sure what happened to him but I can assume someone yanked on it too rough and he does get a little scared if you grab his collar and will sit down and shake his head hard to get you to let go. For this reason he is walked on a harness. He walks great and when you stop walking he sits at your side. Jack did well at the groomers while getting his bath and nails clipped. And Ernie is Jacks' buddy. Ernie is roughly 5 years old and believed to be a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix but I would say he leans heavily towards the Chihuahua side. He has never met a toy that he doesn't like and could spend all day playing ball. He is just a very happy-go-lucky kind of dog. He's very friendly and he loves his friend Jack. Ernie is not a fan of tile floors but is slowly warming up to them so don't be alarmed if he refuses to walk on tile or hardwoods at first. Ernie does well getting his nails clipped but the quick is very long on his nails so his nails tend to always look a little longer than other dogs. He loves children as well and if allowed he will spend most of his time with kids either playing with them or laying on their bed with them. He loves to be petted and will jump into your lap but occasionally will try to jump up and kiss you. He thinks hands are toys and does tend to get a little playful nippy but responds well to verbal correction. Ernie loves playing with his foster sister who is a German Shepherd Husky mix. He holds his own quite well. Both dogs are crate trained and eat in their kennels otherwise Jack will eat Ernie's food. They would do best in a home without cats.     Say 'hi' to Ted... quietly, he nervous! Ted has been here a while now, but oh, the progress! Looking normal much of the time now. Follows you everywhere off leash. Routine oriented. He's blowing me away. Longest I have ever had a foster, but the things he's taught me are invaluable! He's about 2, Queensland / Catahoula combo. Beautiful guy, one blue eye. Ted came here with his sister/mother, who knows, Tessa from the small Orange Cove Shelter, in July 2014. Sometimes I wish I knew a dog's story. How could they be SO shut down?! Ted was one of those dogs. He's fearful and under socialized. Been working with him, and experience has proven ... (Read More)that they are all reachable. The kind of progress I'm grateful for, he now instigates play with dogs, loves sleeping on a dog bed inside and knows how to navigate the dog door, and is housebroken. He's not terrified of me anymore! Eats grass on walks... walks on a leash. I can pet him... I'm tellin' ya, it's the little things that are enormous with some of these guys! Now when we walk, Ted is so close he bumps into the back of my legs, and I feel his breath on the back of my hand... Ted just needs a special adopter, one who might understand Ted is special. He could just be left alone to exist, but I would love to see him with someone that would touch him every day, take him on walks, expose him to things. This is when I've seen the most improvements. Exposure to everything! Immersion. Was a huge deal to even force him to sleep in a dog bed next to me! Once he did for a few days, he expected it! Routine is key! Dogs are incredible, you can reach them through routine. Still working and he has all the time he needs...     Sandy is a sweet young girl who is eager to please. She can be a bit unsure at first but is friendly and responds quickly to some love. She loves to play fetch, and at her previous home she showed an interest in herding sheep and cattle, so she might enjoy life on your ranch. Since she's just a youngster (about 18 months old), she will do best in a home where she gets plenty of exercise for both her mind and body. Sandy is a high-energy girl who needs plenty of activity, both mental and physical (give this girl a JOB!). Come by the Ranch for a visit with this beauty and see if she's the one for you, or give us a call at 842-0829 for ... (Read More)more info. Rescue Ranch is open every day from 12pm-4pm. Sandy update 4/12: Rescue Ranch has a potential agility star -- 'Sandy' attended her first class at the Ranch yesterday and she is a natural. So smart! She caught on quickly and was oh-so-eager to do it again after being introduced to each obstacle. If you don't have any sheep or cattle for her to learn to herd, you could have a whole lot of fun learning agility with her. Originally labelled as 'shy', Sandy has quickly come out of her shell under the nurturing hands of the RR staff and volunteers. She's glad to see everyone -- such a sweet, happy girl. Sandy could use a little more obedience work, and with her boundless teenage energy, will need plenty of exercise. But we were all amazed at how quickly she figured out both the agility obstacles, and caught onto the rhythm of waiting her turn to play on them. (Less)

Rain 'found' us Aug. '15. For a week, whenever she caught sight of us she'd run and hide. She came to trust us, wag her tail, and gained a good amount of weight. She initially blended into our 'pack' of a male Boxer and a female Pitt mix while we looked for her owner(s). We made mistakes -- being naive about the attention needs and energy levels of not only her breed (we're going by 'looks' for breed) but of our two 'home dogs'. We did not 'drain' Rain's energy sufficiently to maintain balance in the 'pack'. Rain and the Pitt mix can not be alone with one another as they have fought. She does well with the Boxer. It's unclear if it's ... (Read More)because of being male or because of his non-alpha temperament. She has also played well with a male lab on a few occasions. We know she has growled and snarled at visitors, but it's also unclear if that comes from insecurity or from some negative experience she's had. Bottom line: We're sorry we can not keep her. If we didn't have two 'high energy' dogs, or just the Boxer, we DEFINITELY would keep Rain. We want her to find a safe, caring, balanced 'pack leader' who understands (better than we did) the need for exercise for her breed. Rain needs 'a job'. Our 'pack' needs stability returned. She rides EXTREMELY well in the cars. She tethers well when needed. Walks fairly well on lead. Comes when called better than any other dog we've had. She is SWEET and BRIGHT. Rain is a great little dog. (Less)

This little character is Fin, a 4 year old Australian Cattledog mix. At 22 pounds, he is a small guy with mass amounts of personality! Fin has learned a lot of house manners. He is house and crate trained. He knows sit and 'to your bed' when it's time for the crate. He is wonderful in the car and on leash. He learns so fast that he may have learned something new by the time you are reading this. He also LOVES his blankeys! He loves to bury himself in his blankets and pillows. He's also a goof - very wiggly and snuggly and affectionate once he gets to know you. Fin enjoys casual hikes or long strolls through the neighborhood. Once he gets to ... (Read More)know his person, he is even good off leash on a hike. Fin is a big guy in a small package. He needs a home where his people aren't pushovers. If he gets an inch, he will take a mile. Therefore, he is looking for a home that understands that some dogs feel best when they have a lot of structure. He also is looking for a home where he is a buddy rather than a teddy bear. He will do best hanging out with his person but not being cuddled and coddled. A home without kids is required. He lives with other animals and gets along well. Just like with people, he does best when his animal friends aren't pushovers. In order to help Fin be the best he can be, he has been enrolled in professional training where his obedience skills have been refined. He has received additional socialization with dogs and people, too. He will always be a one or two person kind of dog rather than the super social, love everyone kind of guy. If you want devoted, he is definitely that. HIs foster mom says that he has a way of becoming a part of your heart, so even with his need for structure, he is well worth it. He will come with a few sessions of training with his new person and current trainer so that his transition to a new home is smooth and effective. The training is included in his adoption fee. Fin is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to local rescues. Fin is a SoCal kind of guy and loves the weather here. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)
