My husband raised Queensland Heelers in Oregon and he said with a little bit of training Lo would be a great dog. The BEST thing...he has a tail. Very unusual, most people dock their tails. Rescue Me ID: 16-05-18-00646Inga (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Incontinent

[Read About Natural Incontinence Care] Lovely Inga is a 6-7 year old Australian Cattledog mix who is wonderful with people and kids aged 5 and up, but nervous around infants. Therefore, she is looking for a new home. Inga is such a great dog. She is ready to step into your life easily and make it that much better. She is a smart girl and knows all of her basic commands? sit, stay, go to bed, leave it (most of the time), sit pretty, Ok (as a release word), up (for when she is lying down in the way and you need her to move). She has a nice recall, coming when you call her name. She was earning her way to a trick dog certification but her person ... (Read More)didn't have the time to finish it. She was also learning agility and achieved her novice title. Inga is a polite house member. When food drops on the floor, she doesn't immediately jump on it. She waits. She knows, once shown, not to enter the kitchen or garage. She learns boundaries and sticks to them. She also waits for permission rather than just jumping on the couch. Inga is house and crate trained. She knows what a leash is. Sometimes she will pull, but a minor correction reminds her to be polite. She is also good in the car, settling down after a bit. She is ready for adventures out and about! Inga is good with adults, men and women, and kids above the age of five. She simply gets nervous with toddlers who are learning to walk and grab at dogs and other things. She has enjoyed the company of school age kids. She is very nice with the two autistic young boys that come to visit the family often. She is also good with other dogs of all sizes. She tends to be submissive. Inga is a very special girl. She is affectionate, loyal, and wants to be someone's best friend. Belly rubs and sleeping in bed with you are some of her favorite things. She likes to play in the water and sometimes sticks her paws in the water bowl. Inga is looking for a home who will appreciate her special qualities and her one special need. She can be incontinent, but a twice daily dose of an inexpensive medication (Proin) keeps her from having any accidents. It's easy to administer and is not expensive. Inga currently weighs about 60 pounds. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. She currently lives in the Los Angeles area. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to local rescues. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-05-14-00379Posey (male)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Not Good with Cats
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hello there, I am desperately looking for a foster or permanent home for Posey, a young male Queensland Heeler. People with cattle dog experience only. I live in Berkeley and regularly take in foster dogs from the Milo Foundation. Since the end of January I have been fostering an almost 2 year old male cattle dog, Posey, and he is a difficult case. I won't be able to foster him any longer since I will be traveling to Germany to see my mother in 10 days and the way he is behaving right now he is not adoptable to just anyone yet. Bringing him back to a kennel at Milo's is not an option either. He was so stressed and unhappy there and in ... (Read More)complete shut down. I was hoping to find a cattle dog savvy person who would be willing to foster and work with him so that at some point he will be ready to find his forever home. We even have reached the point where we have been discussing euthanasia since we are running out of options. I love him dearly and can't even imagine giving up on him but I don't know what to do. Here is his story: His previous owner surrendered him telling the Milo Foundation that he was kept in an empty house all by himself for several months. His people came by once a day to feed him. First he stayed there with his sister who then got stolen from the property. Before the family moved out of that house and left the dogs behind he lived with a married couple and their 10 year old daughter. The first 2 weeks I had him he was the perfect dog besides some isolated attempts to nip at ankles (but he also had a severe case of kennel cough and felt quite sick) and got adopted quickly by a family of 4. The first week went well but then he bonded strongly with one of the adults, tolerated the other adult but turned against the 2 teenagers in the household. He bit the teenage daughter (no blood but bruises) and they had to keep him away from the kids since he growled and barked each time he saw them. The same with visitors coming to the house. So I got him back. With me and my dog he is the sweetest guy, affectionate and loving, so smart and obedient, no handling issues, no guarding behavior; he trusts me completely but his fear aggression and stranger/danger behavior has gotten worse. Not well socialized as a puppy he is very insecure and chooses fight over flight when he is scared. On leash he freaks out and tries to bite people who get too close to us. I got him used to a muzzle to be on the safe side since I am sure that he actually would bite. I regularly took him on group walks with 2 other women and their dogs and off leash he is doing much better and I could take off the muzzle. However, as soon as he feels threatened or insecure he would go for these women's ankles or chins. His bite inhibition is not good at all. And since he hardly gives any visible signs of being stressed his biting attempts can be quite unpredictable. We made some progress here in my back yard. He now accepts that there are neighbors and I can call him off when he starts to bark at them through the fence but on hikes he is not improving. There is just too much going on where I live. At home he is a delight. Great house manners, so smart, such a fast learner. I can leave him alone for several hours, with my dog or all by himself, he loves to play fetch (rather obsessively), he is 100% housebroken, zero accidents. What he would need now is a quiet home and environment (where I live there are people, dogs and cars everywhere) and someone who is experienced with cattle dogs. Someone who can keep him under his threshold so that he doesn't have to freak out several times a day. Someone who can teach him to trust more than one person and that he doesn't need to protect his human. I really hope you can help him. He is a great sweet dog who deserves a chance and I am at the end of my rope. He stole my heart and I can't let him die. Thank you for your time! I appreciate it. Barbara (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-05-14-00248Ziggy (female)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

It's Ziggy! She is a 34 pound, 1.5 year old Australian Cattledog who is looking for a forever home. Ziggy is a very good girl. She is house and crate trained. She is polite in the car, so is a wonderful girl for going on adventures. Ziggy knows a lot. She knows sit, stay, down, stay, come, heel, leave it, 'get in the crate,' and 'get busy' which is her command to go potty. She also knows how to heel, though she can use some extra work here. Ziggy is typical Cattledog, meaning that she is quirky. People who like this breed like the quirks. She will catch a tennis ball in mid air, but won't always give it back to you. She also loves to ... (Read More)play soccer. She will push it back to you, often while carrying that tennis ball that she would not let go of, and wants you to kick the soccer ball back to you. If you don't want to play soccer, it's fine. She will play her own game. Ziggy is loving with a family, though she is too much dog for a kid that is younger than junior high. She will give kisses if you let her. That said, as is normal for the breed, she will also guard the yard. So, if you have a gardener, you will need to put her away while the gardener is there. She is definitely a herding dog. She will herd you down the hallway and sometimes will nip at heels. She would like to herd the dog she lives with, too. Ziggy is good with other dogs but is initially slow to warm up. Again, as is typical with the breed, she requires a polite introduction and a dog who knows how to read her cues. She is likely best with another Cattledog, likely a male. She can be intimidating to smaller dogs because of her herding instincts. Ziggy is looking for an active home and would really blossom in a home that knows the breed. She would love to have someone keep both her body and mind busy. Hiking is a favorite past time for her. She is also a velcro dog, so she follows her person everywhere in the house. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. She currently lives in the Los Angeles area. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to local rescues. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Miss Minnie Pearl, a real pearl of a girl. She is a 4 year old pixie, weighing 29 pounds, and full of love with her long, cattledog tail. Don't let her smaller stature fool you. She is ready for an active home. Minnie is looking for a person who appreciates her love of fetching and will join in the fun. In fact, one could call Minnie a toy hoarder. She takes very good care of them and does not pull the stuffing out of her toys like some dogs do. She has been known to carry a toy with her around the house, holding it in her mouth as she walks along. Minnie Pearl currently lives with other dogs and likes them. Like all ladies, she ... (Read More)simply prefers a polite introduction upon meeting. With a few dogs, she will even play. A submissive or neutral dog would be a lovely companion for her. Miss Minnie Pearl is a very polite girl. She knows sit, wait, and off. She also walks nicely on a leash and rides politely in the car. She is ready for a person who wants to go places and take her along. Minnis is a sponge when it comes to learning. She is very interested in learning and would really blossom with additional training or even someone who wants to take her to flyball or agility. Minnie really focuses on her person. She is ready to make a deep bond and be someone's very best pal. That said, with her activity level, Minnie is not a fit for a home with kids under junior high age. Minnie is a lovely house pal. She is house trained and, if you ask, will go into her crate where she remains quietly until it is time to get out. Minnie Pearl is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. She is being fostered in the Inland Empire.     We have had Chewy since she was a puppy. She is completely house trained. She gets along with her adopted sister most of the time but has attacked her on a few occasions. We have cats that Chewy just lives to chase. I think Chewy would do really well on a ranch with maybe a female owner. She shows aggression toward strangers. Is a great watch dog.     Meet Sadie and Woofers, who, sadly, were brought to the shelter after their beloved owner was placed in hospice care. They are now looking for a new home to park their dog beds and live out their golden years. Sadie is a lovely Australian Shepherd mix about 8 years old, and Woofers is a handsome Queensland Heeler about 10 years old. They are very bonded and look out for each other. Both are easygoing, housetrained, cratetrained, not destructive, and are very affectionate, they love hugs and kisses. They are still quite active but mellow. When they first arrived at their foster home they were a bit overweight, but have now slimmed down and ... (Read More)really love going for walks and car rides. They've also both tested well with other dogs, but are over their rough and tumble days so would prefer to spend their time with other low-key, friendly dogs like themselves.     This fun, outdoorsy guy is Charlie. He is a 9 year old Australian Cattledog/Kelpie mix. For those of you who know the breed, this is a perfect age! He is active and is looking for adventure. Charlie is a very smart guy. He knows sit, down, stay, come, heel, and place. He also knows tricks like shake, up, and roll-over. He is nice on a leash and loves to go where his person is going. After he gets to know his person, he is even good off leash, though he can sometimes get distracted when there are good smells. Charlie is a polite boy. He is house trained and doesn't mind being in his crate at night to sleep. He is good in the car and gets ... (Read More)jazzed if he is traveling to go on a hike. He especially loves to run in the water and fetch a stick. He doesn't always bring it back, but he sure has a great time. Just watch his video. Charlie is nice with other dogs. With some, he will bark at them. However, when he does, it's just barking. Often he finds that he wants to play with the new dogs he meets. He is also good with cats if the introduction is slow and thoughtful. He just likes to meet feline friends carefully. Charlie is a total character, which the best dogs are. When he wants to ask for something to eat or to go for a walk, he will tell you with funny little moaning noises. He also shows his love by licking faces, but he will respect if you ask him not to. Charlie's only challenge is that he will sometimes really like a new place, so he may want to mark it. That said, it's very easy to make sure this doesn't happen. When he goes to a new place, a quick walk around the new home on leash so he can check it out will keep him from marking it. Charlie is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Adopters north of Santa Barbara will be happily referred to our more northern rescue partners. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-03-21-00556Curry (male)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

UPDATED DESCRIPTION! Curry is 3 years old and is a small, stocky guy who weighs a solid 40 lbs. When we rescued Curry, it was apparent that he had known only neglect and cruelty. He was not socialized with humans and was terrified of meeting new people and being put in new situations. During his time with us, Curry has been blossoming into a smart, playful cattle dog, who wants to please, and adores petting and belly rubs. Once he gets over his initial fear and anxiety around new people and situations, he is a mellow, good natured guy, and super sweet, velcro dog, who loves to cuddle and go for walks. He is a happy guy on his walks and does ... (Read More)very well on leash. He also is good in the car, and likes going for rides. His fosters have worked with him to help build his confidence on walks and in social interactions with humans and dogs. He is extremely observant and super intelligent. He is a thinking dog, who watches and figures things out very quickly. His current foster is training him daily, teaching him the basics of sit, stay, come, leave it, and (of course) 'cuddle time!' Now that his foster sisters have shown him how to play with toys and with other dogs, he is learning the doggy social skills he should have been taught as a puppy. He has become much more confident on walks, too. Although he loves his play time and walks, Curry is a moderate energy guy, who is quiet and calm hanging out in the house. He is house trained and is currently living in a house with an elderly cat. Curry is being introduced to the cat gradually and has shown lots of curiosity, but little to no prey drive. We believe that with proper training he could be safe around cats, chickens, livestock, etc. Curry is very much a blank slate who wants you to teach him how to be a good boy. It seems Curry is making up for the loss of his puppyhood. He loves the security of having an older sister and a leader to follow. Curry needs to have another dog companion as his own 'seeing eye dog' to help him evaluate a situation, and realize that it is okay and nothing bad will happen to him. He cuddles with his foster sisters and gives them kisses. He doesn't compete for food or resources. He would be best in a household matched with a confident, balanced, yet energetic and playful dog who can 'show him the ropes.' He takes correction well from his alpha sister. Sometimes he will comply with her correction, but give her a few barks to tell her she wasn't nice to him. He will also need people who are willing to continue teaching him - in a way that does not trigger his fears - manners, routines, and confidence. If he does something he shouldn't and is told to stop, he takes it well and stops immediately. Although he is gaining confidence every day, he will continue to be very cautious and afraid in new situations, Curry will require an adopter who has the dedication to continue his socialization and training. We are seeking a very special home for Curry, with herding dog experience, and as mentioned above, at least one other dog, who is happy, friendly and playful. It may take a little time, patience and TLC to see the real Curry blossom in a new home. It may take him several meetings and several days with potential adopters, for Curry to begin to trust a new person. We discussed his fear with a trainer, who said that it could take a very long time before Curry begins to generalize that people are okay. For these reasons, we need to be fairly sure that a given new situation and people are completely right for Curry. Please begin our process by completing our adoption questionnaire (online form or download a hard copy). At our website (hittgv.org), click on the Adopt tab near the top of the page, and scroll down to find the online Adoption Form. You can also email us at doghouse@hittgv.org if you have specific questions about Curry or our process. (Less)

Rain 'found' us Aug. '15. For a week, whenever she caught sight of us she'd run and hide. She came to trust us, wag her tail, and gained a good amount of weight. She initially blended into our 'pack' of a male Boxer and a female Pitt mix while we looked for her owner(s). We made mistakes -- being naive about the attention needs and energy levels of not only her breed (we're going by 'looks' for breed) but of our two 'home dogs'. We did not 'drain' Rain's energy sufficiently to maintain balance in the 'pack'. Rain and the Pitt mix can not be alone with one another as they have fought. She does well with the Boxer. It's unclear if it's ... (Read More)because of being male or because of his non-alpha temperament. She has also played well with a male lab on a few occasions. We know she has growled and snarled at visitors, but it's also unclear if that comes from insecurity or from some negative experience she's had. Bottom line: We're sorry we can not keep her. If we didn't have two 'high energy' dogs, or just the Boxer, we DEFINITELY would keep Rain. We want her to find a safe, caring, balanced 'pack leader' who understands (better than we did) the need for exercise for her breed. Rain needs 'a job'. Our 'pack' needs stability returned. She rides EXTREMELY well in the cars. She tethers well when needed. Walks fairly well on lead. Comes when called better than any other dog we've had. She is SWEET and BRIGHT. Rain is a great little dog. (Less)

This little character is Fin, a 4 year old Australian Cattledog mix. At 22 pounds, he is a small guy with mass amounts of personality! Fin has learned a lot of house manners. He is house and crate trained. He knows sit and 'to your bed' when it's time for the crate. He is wonderful in the car and on leash. He learns so fast that he may have learned something new by the time you are reading this. He also LOVES his blankeys! He loves to bury himself in his blankets and pillows. He's also a goof - very wiggly and snuggly and affectionate once he gets to know you. Fin enjoys casual hikes or long strolls through the neighborhood. Once he gets to ... (Read More)know his person, he is even good off leash on a hike. Fin is a big guy in a small package. He needs a home where his people aren't pushovers. If he gets an inch, he will take a mile. Therefore, he is looking for a home that understands that some dogs feel best when they have a lot of structure. He also is looking for a home where he is a buddy rather than a teddy bear. He will do best hanging out with his person but not being cuddled and coddled. A home without kids is required. He lives with other animals and gets along well. Just like with people, he does best when his animal friends aren't pushovers. In order to help Fin be the best he can be, he has been enrolled in professional training where his obedience skills have been refined. He has received additional socialization with dogs and people, too. He will always be a one or two person kind of dog rather than the super social, love everyone kind of guy. If you want devoted, he is definitely that. HIs foster mom says that he has a way of becoming a part of your heart, so even with his need for structure, he is well worth it. He will come with a few sessions of training with his new person and current trainer so that his transition to a new home is smooth and effective. The training is included in his adoption fee. Fin is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to local rescues. Fin is a SoCal kind of guy and loves the weather here. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Howdy, I'm Rose! I love people; especially ones that brush me, give me biscuits, and take me for walks on my leash. I absolutely adore showing off my backyard sprinting skills, and will do fancy spins when requested and then present you with a goofy grin! I'm also extremely content to just hang out by your side and watch what you are doing. Honestly, I'm not a pup anymore and a few good laps around the yard gets my jollies out. I'm not into playing games, I just like being a companion. I get along with all the people and dogs I have met here; but my foster Mom thinks I was a hunter's dog or a farm girl, so small prey like kitties and I don't ... (Read More)mix. I do need a secure yard because when opportunity knocks I'm going to go a sniffin'! I walk well on leash, am content to relax in my kennel, and know many basic commands. I LOVE THE DOG PARK! I'm always the best dog, mind my own business, just enjoying all the space to sniff and people and dogs to meet and greet. I need a house with a soft bed, yummy treats, and people who like nuzzles! It's lonely being an outside dog here, my foster mom tries to make sure I have a companion with me to keep me company throughout the day and I do get to kennel up inside at night for bed, but I don't get to hang out with the family inside because they have indoor kitties. I dream of having a home where I can live out my days being right by your side and making you smile every time I flash you my goofy grin. Rose is up to date on her shots, is licensed in Kern County, and is micro chipped. She recently had her teeth cleaned, she has a prepaid year at Banfield Pet Hospital. The YouTube video is of Rose sharing her food with our little dog Lilly, Rose is so sweet! If you, or someone you know, would like to give this special girl a forever home, please contact me! (661) 412-3179 or kayk79@gmail.com PLEASE - ROSE needs and deserves a forever home where she can always come inside and lay by your feet while you watch TV, or hang out by your side while you putter around in the backyard. She really loves just hanging out with you. She's not one to chase a ball, I throw one for her and she looks at me like, 'Yeah, and now what?' Instead she just likes to run Indy 500 laps around the yard stopping each lap to lick my hand and say 'Hi' then after about 4 laps she just sits next to me and enjoys watching the world go by. I currently cannot walk her very long - and she LOVES walks! I was in a SEVERE automobile accident 2 years ago and fractured my pelvis. Then shattered a finger breaking up a fight between another rescue and my other dog. My daughter is now pregnant and we really need to rehome Rose as we just don't have the room, time or finances for her any longer. My heart breaks because I feel like I am the worst foster mom to this wonderful sweet girl - so please, let's find Rose a forever home! (Less)

Australian Cattle Dog
lnteresting Australian Cattle Dog Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Cattle Dogs were bred by 19th century Australian pioneers to herd cattle on large ranches. Most Australian Cattle Dogs have a star-shaped marking on their foreheads called the Bentley Mark, after dog owner Thomas Bentley, whose purebred dog supposedly passed this mark on to all genuine Australian Cattle Dogs. Australian Cattle Dogs are excellent at catching frisbees. The Australian Cattle Dog nips at a cow's heels to keep it in line with the herd, and may apply this technique to its humans from time to time as well.
