Rescue Me ID: 14-07-23-00723Katie (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Very High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Katie is a beautiful 2.5 - 3.5 year old German Pointer and Blue Heeler mix. She is a medium-sized dog, who is currently overweight at 60lbs, but should weigh about 50lbs when at a healthy weight. She is current on all vaccinations. Katie should not be around children (approximately under 13 years), should not be around cats, and should not be around small dogs. She would do well with another dog if she has a slow introduction - she is not the kind of dog who can run up to a strange dog and be happy, and she shows signs of aggression to new dogs. When meeting new people, Katie may bark and be fearful. If given a treat, she commits to ... (Read More)loving the new person. Katie is also fearful of quick movements and loud sounds (i.e. semi-trucks scare her a lot) She is a very, very smart dog and all of these problems could be easily addressed with some training. Here is the story of Katie: I went to the pound last October looking for a dog who would fit my lifestyle. After looking at many dogs, I walked passed her cage. She was curled up in the back of her cage and clearly depressed; she had no desire to see people. I walked by her cage again and she picked up her head a little and wagged her tail a little. I had the staff take her out of that cage, and met with her. That's when I learned that she had been transferred to this pound by a local high-kill shelter because her time there was up. And, she had been at this pound for a week and had gotten no attention - everyone seemed to walk right passed her. I asked the staff why this may be and they told me she was an 'undesirable' breed. Well, I had fallen in love. I was told she had just been spayed and would be fully recovered in three days, and right then and there, she came home with me! When I got home, I realized it was a very good thing she had gotten out of that pound - her spay wound was infected, open, and causing her to throw up from licking it. I took her to the vet ASAP, where I learned that she was allergic to stiches. And she had several more complications with the wound; it ended up taking about 5 months for her to fully recovery. Well, after she finally recovered, she became a totally different dog - happy, loving, joyful, and playful - everything a dog should be! But I realized I made a mistake, because she could never be happy living in the tiny apartment I rented. She deserves a family who has more time for her and a yard. With a little training, she could be the most lovable and wonderful dog anyone could ever want. She is so amazing and I wish I could keep her because I love her, but I know she will be much happier in a home more suited for her. So to all you dog lovers out there, please consider giving Katie a new home! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-07-21-00580Liberty (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Liberty is our 4th of July rescue pup. Although he is his adult size at 48 lbs., he is still a silly pup. Our boy is a little overweight and ideally should be around 45 lbs. We estimate that he is about 1 year old. Liberty is extremely sweet and submissive, and loves all people and other dogs. He loves nothing more than to be with and play with his people and other dogs in his pack. His foster family has nicknamed him 'Bug,' because of his tendency to 'bug' those around him. As a goofy pup, he sometimes makes himself a pest to other dogs, following them around constantly and trying to get them to play. With people, he will let you know ... (Read More)that he would like some attention by gently poking your leg with his nose, and then giving you a happy smile and a wag. We have not seen 'Bug' with cats, but would guess that he would just want to play. There is not a mean bone in Liberty's body. Our boy is a bit timid, especially in strange new situations. We don't know his background before the shelter, but when he is exposed to new occurrences or situations that he is unsure about, he will flatten himself on the ground. Liberty 'Bug' will need someone who is patient and willing to spend the time to work with him to shape him into a happy and confident adult. He needs to learn about the world by going to lots of fun new places and experiences, to help build his confidence. Liberty very much wants to please and will be easy to train. He is completely house trained and knows how to use a dog door. He walks beautifully on a leash with limited correction. He sleeps in a crate, in the bedroom with his foster people and dogs, and will go into his crate for a nap. As he is still a pup, Liberty will need a consistent supply of chew toys so that he doesn't resort to your shoes and cords. He is a medium energy dog who would be happy with a daily long walk and to be by your side. If you are interested in adopting Liberty. please complete our online adoption questionnaire. It provides us with your contact information, tells us a little about your situation and pet experience, and is part of our pre-approval process. Rescue Me ID: 14-07-21-00572Ace (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Ace is a very well balanced dog. We estimate that he is around 3 years old. He is on the thin side and weighs about 53 lbs. His ideal weight may be 55 to 58 lbs. He loves people and receiving human attention, and is extremely very well mannered and calm. As with most cattle dogs, Ace wants to be with his person/people whenever possible. Wherever you are, he will be quietly resting under your desk or table, or under your chair. Ace is very attentive and loving with all people. He is submissive to humans, especially those who show leadership. Ace is very trusting of humans and even if painful has allowed people he barely know to handle ... (Read More)him. With other dogs, he is a leader who keeps the peace. If another dog demonstrates bad dog manners, will put another dog in its place, but he is NOT a bully. Ace gets along fabulously with another 'alpha' cattle dog male, and a well behaved border collie female, where he is being fostered. He came to us already neutered, but when outside he is still territorial and, if other dogs have been in an outside area, he will mark the perimeter of a yard. We believe he is crate trained, as he will go into one without a fuss, and enjoys being under cave-like covered spaces when resting. He walks BEAUTIFULLY on a leash. Ace is extremely observant and very smart! As a dog who will check-in; with his people on a regular basis, he is very easy to train and manage. We believe he already knows several basic commands. Ace is a medium energy dog, and he is NOT at all interested in playing ball. He would be fine with another well balanced and/or submissive dog, or as an only dog. Ace is a highly intelligent, thinking dog, we recommend that he live with a human who understands pack leadership. Everyone in our rescue who has met him, says that whoever adopts him will be a very lucky person. If you are interested in adopting Ace, please complete our online adoption questionnaire. It provides us with your contact information, tells us a little about your situation and pet experience, and is part of our pre-approval process. Rescue Me ID: 14-07-21-00567Sutter (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Sutter is a true gentleman dog! He is a 7+ yr. old neutered male Catahoula and cattle dog mix. He is about as gentle and mellow a dog as you will ever find. He weighs 59 lbs. and is a low-medium energy dog. Sutter is not a dog that makes a lot of noise or announces himself to the world. He sits quietly, listens for direction, and hopes that someone, sometime, will see what a sweet dog he is. Sutter appears to be completely house trained - and crate trained, walking right into a crate with his hot dog treat. He is very easy to walk on leash. Sutter enjoys exploring in the yard. He has a very soft mouth and uses his tongue rather than his ... (Read More)teeth to take a treat. He gets along well with other dogs. He meets other dogs politely. When first meeting other dogs, if the other dog is energetically in his face, Sutter may grumble, or take a superior position over the dog to get it be less eager or less busy around him. After the introductions, Sutter is relaxed and enjoys the company of the other dog(s). At his short term foster home, he was fine and happy living with the dominant old female, the ball-crazy young male, and the insecure adult male dog. He is currently being fostered with a playful cattle dog, and when hanging out together, the two will lick each other's faces. At his current foster home, Sutter was interested in a bossy cat, who swatted at him several times. He wasn't happy with the cat, but merely barked his displeasure a few times to the aggressive cat - while keeping his distance. Until we rescued Sutter on July 19th, for the past 4 months, he had been living in a cage at the shelter. He was placed on the euthanasia list, and the volunteers, who all loved him, were frantically searching for a rescue to take him. He is a wonderful, easy going, boy, who is just happy to be with you and go for a nice walk. He will make someone a terrific, low maintenance companion. If you are interested in adopting Sutter, please complete our online adoption questionnaire. It provides us with your contact information, tells us a little about your situation and pet experience, and is part of our pre-approval process. Rescue Me ID: 14-07-21-00559Shadow (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Shadow is a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed Australian cattle dog, who we worked everyday for 3-weeks, through convoluted red tape, to get him out of the shelter. Based on information from shelter volunteers, and knowing cattle dogs, we had a good feeling about this one! When we went to get him he had been in the shelter for 40 days. He was depressed and seemed to have given up hope of ever getting out. From the moment he was released, he was transformed into a very happy boy, freely giving kisses to anyone who greeted him. During his first night of freedom, he didn't sleep much, as he spent most of the night visiting his foster human and ... (Read More)licking her face to thank her for pulling him out of the shelter. An incredibly handsome guy, Shadow has a dark, medium length fur that is a soft mix of blue merle, gray and black with a tail that has to be seen to be believed! He is around 3 yrs. old and weighs around 45 lbs. It didn't take Shadow long to feel at home, and once he was comfortable he quickly showed his delightful personality! He loves his people and would never turn down the chance to get a hug or a belly rub. He also gets along fine with his canine foster sister. Shadow is a medium energy dog, and content to sit at your feet if you are otherwise occupied. Once in a while, he may remind you that he is there, with a little nudge asking for just one more rub behind the ears. One of Shadow's favorite things to do is roll around on his back while sighing contentedly. He loves his squeaky toys and will play catch for as long as your arm holds out! He appears to be fully housetrained, is a good eater, and is always up for a walk outside although he will need some additional training on leash walking. He has shown himself to be a sweet, calm, gentle dog. We weren't kidding when we said he was busy tailed - his tail is gorgeously long and bushy, approximately 4 inches in diameter. He will make someone a very devoted and loving companion. Please check back for more updates on our handsome boy! If you are interested in adopting Shadow, please complete our online adoption questionnaire. Health: Spayed

Georgie is a very sweet and smart BorderCollie/Cattle Dog mix around 6 years old. She is in need of a new home, as her owner needed to a move to a place without pets. She is an incredibly smart, energetic girl who loves to play ball, and go for long walks and hikes. She listens well, knows some hand signals and responds off leash well. Favorite things aside from playing and hiking are car rides, In-N-Out burger patties and doing tricks. She can shake, do 'bang' and play dead, hop up with her paws on your arm to gently take a treat, and of course sit, stay, and lay down. She has lived with two cats and actively played with one of them. Would ... (Read More)do best with older kids, as she tries to herd the little ones and they don't quite understand. Her owner had chickens for several years and she loved to watch over her flock. She is semi-crate-trained, but is OK in the house during the day without having to be crated; the crate is more just her bed space. She is currently in a foster home in Marin County, CA and is looking for a forever home ASAP, preferably where she gets to be an only dog. (Less)

Hope & Faith are one year old female pups of a Border Collie dad, Blue Healer mom. They are so smart and have trained well with our family. We live on an urban busy street where they have become very vocal at anything moving outside the gate. They love to run so we hope to find them a loving family/owner/trainers as they are very loyal, protective and attached to their people. They love to fetch and will play with other people. Ideally, you will give them a large yard to run & explore & neighbors who accept normal barking. Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hazel is a darling, sweet and lovable, 34 lb, cattle dog/pit bull mix. This petite 1 year old girl is chocolate brown with the white speckled pattern on her chest, belly and the tips of her feet. She is super affectionate and friendly. She's a great loose leash walker! And she would make a super agility dog! She is so athletic, agile, well-behaved and learns quickly. She loves plush toys, jumping and playing tug. She also likes kongs, treat balls, bully sticks. She is very strong for a little thing. Hazel is in obedience training and doing well. She is now in the habit of sitting and waiting at the door or in the car to go out. She also ... (Read More)can sit and wait for her food. So trainable. At night she sleeps on a dog bed on the floor at the foot of our bed but she is such a great snuggler I've spent the night curled up with her on our sofa bed. She currently lives with a 9 lb Chihuahua mix and they engage in great games of chase and nuzzling too. Sometimes Hazel doesn't know her own strength and she can get a little overpowering and mouthy so we are working on that. We can take food or toys from her mouth with no problem whatsoever. However sometimes she can be a little food aggressive with our small dog. This seems to be lessening as currently they have a pig's hoof they take turns nibbling on. Hazel is looking for a confident leader to help her overcome leash reactivity and learning to stay calm and submissive. Her current owners have been working with her and made good progress, however due to their current living situation, they can no longer keep her. She really has so much love to give and is a total sweetheart! Please consider giving her a forever home.     Say 'Hi' to Tessa! Tessa is a beautiful 5 year old, Queensland girl. Came to us shy and scared from the Orange Cove Shelter with her buddy Ted. She's the type of dog you wish could talk... what's her story? Spent her first day in the laundry room here hiding under a Kuranda bed. But this girl is resilient and wants to trust people! Took her out on her first pack walk, she's great on leash. She's curious about the other dogs, totally and friendly and appropriate. She actually can't wait to get off leash to go join in all the fun the rest of the pack is having! Tessa is appropriate and reserved with people. Will let you pet her, but needs ... Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

Nakota is a wonderful dog who needs a little more structure in his life when meeting new people. He gets worried living on a horse boarding facility because of all the activity. I rescued him from a man who was keeping him crated 22 out of 24 hours of the day. He bonds very strongly with his 'family' and welcomes outsiders after meeting them a few times. He is NEVER aggressive but does get nervous around strangers the first few times. Kota knows all of his basic commands and is learning more advanced commands because he is starting agility training. He walks on a loose leash with just a regular collar. He will follow you on horseback to go ... (Read More)trail riding. He gets along with EVERY dog on the face of this earth and has NO interest in chasing/killing/eating anything.. even tasty looking rabbits. He does excellent off-leash as well and will follow you on a bike, golf cart, quad etc. He rides in the car/truck like a champ.. gets in and immediately curls up and goes to sleep. He loves swimming, hiking, playing fetch (he brings the ball or stick back and drops it on command. He wont touch it while it's in your hand either), going to the dog park, going to the beach, and anything that involves exercise. He loves kids as well! Please understand his need for exercise. He is not a couch potato. He would be great for someone wanting an agility or fly-ball dog after he gains some confidence. Please have experience training a dog with nervousness around people (no touch, no talk, no eye contact). He is a really cool dog and needs an equally cool, fun, adventurous owner. If at any point you can not keep him for any reason, he will be returned to me. (Less)

I have this dog almost 6 months, so he is probably at least 2 years old, from what the vet figures. I had him fixed and current vaccines because I have 2 dogs. I am an animal lover so I tried to fit him in here. I just do t have the time to work with him. He is high energy, unlike my dogs. He wants to play or be with a companion. He is a good watch dog. I need to find him a suitable home. I have cats also. He doesn't hurt them, but he barks and lunges at them in the window. My home is just not the place for him. I don't want to have to take him to a shelter so I am hoping he finds a home here.

The drug addict human who lived there took us all to a supermarket to try & sell us to anyone who would give her a few dollars for us. Not a good situation for us. A good citizen GRFF volunteer rescued us from the market and we are now safe with our mom in a great foster home. We're still nursing, but we should be ready for adoption in a few weeks.     Avail 6/15/2014 Fargo is looking for an awesome home! Sweet boy - waggerific tail. Brings you his toys to throw for him. Takes treats gently. Dances for booty scratches. Gives kisses on the first date. Uses a doggy door. Walks on leash very nice. Wants to be your lap dog. Loves to play with hose water/sprinklers. Is used to being an inside dog with outside access to a backyard through a doggy door and sleeping with his person. He needs a decent amount of daily hard panting exercise - more than a 20-45 minute walk around the neighborhood. As long as he has his daily exercise he will be a good boy and not get into trouble. (A tired ... (Read More)dog is a good dog!) He quickly warms up to nice adult strangers, older children that have been taught how to interact with and treat dogs properly are ok but we would advise against younger children (or any that run around and scream - he gets overly excited and does not like the running and screaming and starts chasing/nipping). Has been with a BIG sister - Finnish Spitz/Shep mix - since he was found on the road injured at 3 mths. (Vet thinks he was tossed out of a car.) Owner is unable to care for him any longer due to declining health but would like to keep in touch and get updates on how he is. His owner made a very difficult decision in the best interest of Fargo's future. 2 yrs old, ACD x Dachshund, Intact (will be neutered ASAP), vaccinations current. Fargo will be learning more of the basics (not to chase/nip other dogs), some tricks, beginning agility and trying out dock diving. More eval coming, videos coming. (Less)

Meet Ranger. This handsome speckled boy is a 8 year old Australian Cattle Dog/Lab mix. Abandoned by his owner, he was saved by a good samaritan who helped to find a rescue for him. He is now looking for his forever home. Ranger is a healthy 79 pounds of speckles and wagging tail. He is good with other dogs, even little dogs, and sometimes wants to play. He also enjoys a good game of tag with his person, barking for more when you stop. He has the right amount of energy to be a nice walking companion. He hasn't shown any food aggression and generally takes his treats gently. Ranger has already learned 'sit' and other basic obedience commands. He is currently attending public obedience classes and doing very well. He also enjoys regular walks. Ranger isn't a fan of being brushed. This and an interest in taking goodies off of the counter appear to be his only faults. Ideally, Ranger would get a home with a large, fenced yard. He loves to run around, especially if his people will run around in the yard with him. He seems to have low prey drive since he isn't interested in squirrels. That means that cats are probably just find in Ranger's company. He is house trained and settles nicely when invited in. Ranger is neutered, up to date on shots, and microchipped. He is ready for his home. Because of his size, toddlers and small kids are not a fit for him. Older kids are fine. A vet reference, personal references, and home visit are required as part of the adoption process. Send an e-mail and an adoption application will be sent to you to begin the process. Ranger is being fostered in Simi Valley. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-05-24-00171Delilah (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

***This is a rescue dog that needs a home. Please do not flag! Her adoption allows for us to save another dog's life*** Say hey to Delilah! Delilah came in with her son, Sampson, a few months back. A couple more Desert Dogs. We can only work with them one by one. To prepare them for adoption, each has dedicated time, until ready. Then we move onto the next Desert Dog in need of rehabilitation. Dee was on the more aloof side coming in. With some really good in home socialization, she's doing very well. Just like the Desert Dogs that came before her. Delilah walks great on leash. She lets us pet her, and she doesn't seem to hate us too ... (Read More)much anymore! Really, she's relieved to have some balance and stability in her life. Not to mention unlimited water, food and other useful resources, heat when it's cold, shade when it's hot. It's the little things... when you're a Desert Dog. We now have Dee off leash and she's by our sides always. Having the time of her short life. You can see it in her face. She loves her pack too. Read up on her back ground: https://www.facebook.com/HelpStopDesertDogDeathCamp?ref=ts&fref=ts Delilah was a little tougher to approach at first, than some of the Desert Dogs that came before her. I believe she was an in charge kinda girl in her pack. She's in submission now. Doing amazingly well. She's accepting us and the program. Dee loves to go on her daily walks. The transformation is incredible. An interesting start here. She was boarded on 40 acres, with Bolt, and she got out of her yard one day. She stayed close, and joined us on our pack walks every day, off leash, she'd run with the privileged dogs, but wouldn't allow us to come close enough to catch her... for a week or so. However, we did catch her. We went back to basics and started her on leash. Recently we got that feeling, let her go. She does beautifully! Delilah sleeps on the bed at her fosters, with 2 humans and 2 other dogs. She's got great house manners, no destruction and housebroken. She's a pretty mellow girl, likes to relax on the couch or lay on the bed. Dee is beautiful, about 2 years old. She needs an adopter that is around a lot, and dedicated to furthering her socialization with people. She's great with all the other dogs already.     Meet Salt! Salt has made fast progress! She started off the year living as wild dog in the desert, emaciated, anti-social and beat up. Now, she's off-leash on pack walks, playing with other dogs and pups and loading back into the van when it is time to go. She even lets us pet her. She's a character--no a comedian, but she doesn't know it. She just wants to be her sassy-self, have fun with her dog friends and rough house. So amazing to see this girl blossom. Check out her video here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=1491919827690758. Salt is one of the last 2 Desert Dogs, trapped and brought directly to Central Coast Herding Dog ... (Read More)Rescue with her buddy Pepper. In foster, she has learned to appreciate the finer things that were not offered to her in her prior life (food, shelter, even a nice bed that her foster parents let her share). Salt is one of the more confident and curious Desert Dogs we have had the pleasure to rehabilitate. Upon meeting her foster dad for the first time she marched right over and sniffed him! Big deal for a dog that had had no human contact prior to arrival at CCHD. Salt is house-broken, dog social, non-destructive and rides nicely in the car. Looking for someone to keep your dog exercised? Salt will make sure to get their yaya's out! Salt is looking for humans that will show the patience and compassion to help her continue her socialization. Rescue Me ID: 14-05-14-00572Ulysses (male)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Handsome Ulysses has gorgeous blue eyes. We think he is 5 years old. He is on the taller side and weighs about 45 pounds. He is also crate trained and knows how to use a dog door. He is well-behaved with other dogs, and tolerates everything from grumpy old dogs, to yappy toy breeds, to loose dogs running at him in the park. He visits politely with other dogs, and knows how to listen even when he is interested in making a new friend. Ulysses likes to play fetch, he loves to bring back the toy and hear what a good boy he is. Ullie walks nicely on the leash and does not pull. He rides well in the car and doesn't mind walking through stores, ... (Read More)busy streets, and parking lots. Ullie is also wonderful with cats, he is very respectful and keeps his distance. He is somewhat curious about birds and turtles, but only wants a quick sniff. Ullie could live in a home with older children who are polite and dog savvy. Ullie had a sad background and can be timid, so no rambunctious kids for this guy. Ullie enjoys training time and is working on clicker basics. He knows how to sit and is working on stay, and down. He picks up new behaviors quickly and will be a lot of fun to train. He could be a fun beginner dog in obedience, agility, or just doing silly tricks. Training will require a gentle touch and positive reinforcement only. Since Ullie must have had rough treatment in the past, he does not appreciate a more traditional approach to training which can cause him to react. That said, he loves to be petted and to cuddle, his favorite place is right beside people. He follows his foster family around the house and is quick to flop down on the floor at their feet whenever they stop. He is truly looking to make a deep and life-long bond. Ulysses is ready for a new home. He is microchipped, dewormed, and fully vaccinated. A vet reference and home visit are required as part of the adoption process. He is being fostered in Santa Barbara. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting an Australian Cattle Dog in California
Australian Cattle Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. The Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most intelligent dog breeds, needing a lot of attention to stave off boredom. A neglected Australian Cattle Dog can become destructive. Australian Cattle Dogs have strong herding instincts and behave best when they have plenty of space and a job to do. Australian Cattle Dogs are well suited to farms and homes with large yards; they do not do well confined to an apartment or other small space. Australian Cattle Dogs are loyal and very obedient with attentive training. An Australian Cattle Dog tends not to do well with children unless it has known them since it was a puppy. Australian Cattle Dogs may be very close to their masters and reluctant to accept other people.

lnteresting Australian Cattle Dog Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Cattle Dogs were bred by 19th century Australian pioneers to herd cattle on large ranches. The Australian Cattle Dog nips at a cow's heels to keep it in line with the herd, and may apply this technique to its humans from time to time as well. Australian Cattle Dogs are descended from several different breeds, including Dalmatians and Smithfield Collies, which are now thought to be extinct.
