Rescue Me ID: 17-01-18-00005Ginny (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Male Dogs Only, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Ginny, a 4 year old Cattledog mix who weighs about 49 pounds. Ginny is a smartie pants. She knows sit, down, come, stay, wait, heel, and fetch. She do know other permission commands such as OK, release, and you're free. While she does once in a while get distracted by something exciting like a cat, she does all she can to be a very good listener. Ginny is house and crate trained. She sleeps in her crate at night. She does prefer to have outside access during the day, but only if the yard doesn't lead to fences with dogs on the other side. She can cause quite a stir barking at dogs on the other side of the fence. Ginny has lived ... (Read More)with large and small dogs. However, as is typical with the breed, she is bossy. She prefers a dog that lets her be the queen and isn't too excited or in her face. Another mellow dog, preferably a male, would be fine. Ginny loves her own people. As is typical of the breed, she does prefer polite introductions to new people. She is can also be protective of her home. So, a home that knows how to help a dog feel confident and ensures polite introductions is important for Ginny. That said, with her own people, she enjoys a game of fetch with a ball. She is a funny girl in that she will only fetch a ball. Apparently other toys or items like a stick aren't her thing. Just the ball. If you toss the ball in the pool, she will jump right in! Ginny is a dog who will thrive with an active person or family. She is nice on the leash and can get excited enough with the thought of an adventure to pull a bit. Reminders are helpful. She is also wonderful in the car. She has taken long road trips and is a very polite girl. Ginny is a special girl who just needs a situation that works for her, meaning a situation that knows how to manage a Cattledog who has the usual Cattledog quirks. She loves to follow the rules and loves obedience training. She also will appreciate being the only dog or having a male dog pal who lets her rule the roost. She loves belly rubs is very in tune with her person. %A0 Ginny is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. She is ready to meet qualified adopters in Southern CA. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 17-01-17-00554Zippity Do Dawg (female)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Male Dogs Only, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This beautiful girl is Zippity Do Dawg, or Zippy for short. She was born in March, 2012, so is 5 years old. For those of us with herding dog experience, we know that this is an ideal age for this breed. This darling, spayed female Australian Cattle Dog was saved in the nick of time from near death at a local shelter. She was adopted to a wonderful older lady who recently passed away. Now, she needs a new home. She prefers a home with adults or possibly with older kids. Zippy is 5 years old, approximately 35 pounds, and knows her basic obedience: sit, stay, leave it, and lay down. She is also house and crate trained. She has been snippy ... (Read More)in the past with other dogs in the household and other visiting dogs, especially other female dogs, so she is looking for a home where she is the only dog and she can be a total shadow to her person. If there is another dog, it should be a lower energy male who is polite. This sweet girl is all about love. She is a bit velcro and likes to snuggle on the couch with her person. She has an average to lower heeler energy level and loves to be with her people. However, if you turn on the sprinkler, she turns zippy and will jump in for action. If you turn on the hose, she loves to bite the water. Zippy rides nicely in the car, often sleeping until you get to your destination. She also walks nicely on a leash. Zippy is ready for her forever home. She is microchipped, spayed, heart worm negative, and fully vaccinated. A vet reference and home visit are required as part of the adoption process. Adoption is limited to Southern California. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 17-01-17-00544Molly (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

What a bundle of cuteness! This darling girl is Molly, a four month old mixed breed girl who may have some Cattledog in her. She may not. She is certainly cute and smart and speckled, though! She is currently 18 pounds and we think she will be a medium-sized dog. Molly is a very good puppy. She is already house trained and knows how to sit on command. She takes treats gently. She sleeps quietly all night on her dog bed next to her foster mom's bed. She is also a very social girl. She loves all dogs and has a great time at doggy day care where she has made friends with a Boston Terrier. She is a playful girl and would love to have a pal to ... (Read More)play with at home. So far, she is also good with cats. She would benefit from a cat who knows how to show a puppy what the cat-puppy boundaries are. Molly enjoys playing with people. She likes men, women, and kids, especially if they will play tug with her. She also fetches! Then, when playtime is over, Molly really likes to cuddle, whether with another dog or a person. Molly is a nice girl for adventures. She is nice on leash and polite in the car. She is also a nice girl in the house. She is still young, though, so she will need someone who can help keep her potty training going with consistency. She is only a pup and it's hard to hold a bladder when a dog is this young. She does go potty on command, so it is easy to keep Molly's learning on track. Molly is ready to have fun and be loved. In return, she promises to give her family tons of love and make sure life is fun. Molly is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. She is ready to meet potential adopters in the So Cal area. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 17-01-17-00540Sally (female)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

This beautiful girl is Sally, a one year old petite Australian Cattledog girl. She weighs about 35 pounds, but don't let her small size fool you. She is all Cattledog, with a big personality, and she is looking for a home who knows how to manage a girl with an opinion. Sally is just what you expect: smart. She already knows sit, lay down, off, load up (into the car), and crate (she will run right in!). She also knows to dance on her hind legs for a treat. She would love to keep learning. Sally is also a good house dog. She is good in the crate and will be quiet when there. She is mostly house trained but is still refusing to acknowledge ... (Read More)the doggie door. She can use some continued reinforcement there. Sally is finicky, as is typical with the breed. Once she has a polite introduction to other dogs, she is fine. She prefers dogs who aren't too pushy or boisterous. She lives with another Cattledog and adores him. So, she just isn't a dog park kind of gal. She is more about there people and a few select canine companions. She just needs someone who knows how to make polite introductions and work through any initial discomfort in that meeting. With people, Sally has been social. She likes men and women equally well and should be fine with older, polite kids. She is also a good traveller and loves car rides, hiking, and other similar adventures. She also loves to play fetch. She will even go lay down with it when she is tired and thinks that the game should be done. Sally's foster parents call her passionate. She loves fiercely, including cuddling, snuggling, and being a total shadow to her person. She prefers to sleep on the bed with her people, too. She also uses that same passion when meeting new dogs, hence the need for someone to manage how she meets new friends. She will benefit from a home who knows herding breeds, including how to manage their funny tendencies and their need for a lot of activity. Sally is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. She is ready to meet Cattledog-savvy adopters in the So Cal area. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

2 year old lab cattle dog mix. Great family dog and very smart. Gets along fine with our house cat. On walks will chase anything that moves. She has lived with other dogs no problem, but does not get along with dogs we meet on walks or at the dog park. she needs to be walked by a strong adult as she chases animals and will nip at strangers if not held firmly on her leash. We have chickens and guinea pigs and she leaves them alone. She is great at keeping raccoons and rats out of our yard. She is fine sleeping indoors or outdoors in nice weather.

Rescue Me ID: 17-01-10-00052ARYA *Courtesy Post* (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Arya is a 1 year old cattle dog and, we believe, smooth coat border collie mix, who weighs 43 lbs. She has a gorgeous shiny dark coat, almost like a baby seal. Everyone who has met Arya, has fallen in love with her, even non-dog people.%A0She is a great dog to have with you when dining outside. Arya is very friendly with people, and will sit quietly and watch the world go by. While we were outside at a restaurant, we saw her giving soft kisses to a toddler. This is the goodness that captured our hearts and soul as her foster parents. Arya is wonderful with both toddlers and older children as mentioned. She does not herd them, but enjoys ... (Read More)cuddling with them. When you gaze into her puppy eyes, you will see a sadness, from the abuse she suffered as a small pup. She was robbed of her puppyhood by the history of egregious abuse. Despite this, she remains a sweet, gentle soul. Arya has the text book cattle dog traits of being smart as a whip, very athletic, with a fairly strong drive, and willingness to please. She is a velcro dog who loves to be with her people. Arya is completely house trained, stays off furniture, rides nicely in cars, and knows how to use a doggie door. She loves watching TV, especially Sesame Street. Our girl is great when meeting new dogs. She attends daycare weekly at a beautiful kennel-free doggie ranch where all canine guest must pass a rigorous screening process. This has really helped her socialize with other dogs and learn how to fit into a pack. She is currently enrolled in Basic Obedience class. She learns commands very fast, within minutes or seconds. Arya would do well in a household with friendly, medium to large dogs, who are not seniors, have enough energy to interact with her, and will not be bowled over by her. In a multi-dog home, she can be competitive and wants to be the dominant dog. An example of this is when out for walks. If she is walking alone with you, she walks calmly and stays with you. However, if on a walk with other dogs, she will constantly try to race ahead and be in front. She is curious about cats when seen on walks, but loses interest as we walk forward. Arya does need about 1 or more hours of walking and/or active play or running to be happy and calm. A run or jog of 1.5 to 3 miles a day would provide her with the exercise she needs. If your schedule is busy, alternating a day with a run or other active exercise, with a day of just a shorter walk, would be ok for her, too, as long as you engage her in play on quieter days, such as tug-of-war, and give her a stuffed Kong to keep her occupied during down time.%A0 Arya's ideal home would be with people who have an active lifestyle and like to explore nature and the outdoors, and who have experience with and an understanding of the cattle dog nature. If you are interested in meeting Arya, please first complete our adoption form. At our website (hittgv.org), click on the Adopt button near the top of the page, to find the online Adoption Form. Rescue Me ID: 17-01-06-00568Snarfles (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

It doesn't get any sweeter than Snarfles. This darling little Cattledog mix found himself in a shelter with a seriously bad case of Secondary Acanthuses NIgricans (or for those of us non-medical types- long term neglect left his hair and skin in horrible shape). Now he is healing, his charming personality is coming out, and he is looking for a forever home who is willing to love him as his hair finishes growing in. Snarfles is between 5-6 years old and weighs about 33 pounds. He is a gentle, low key boy who is a social butterfly. He loves everyone that he meets: people, dogs, and cats. He even likes the vet! Snarfles is a very nice boy in ... (Read More)the house. He is house and crate trained. He adores people and loves to cuddle and be held. Heck, he is even looks dashing in a sweater. Don't let that calm demeanor fool you. He is a smartie pants. He knows his name and comes when called. He is working on sit and stay. As for food, that is his special pleasure. He will do anything for food. He can hear a treat bag open from the other side of the house and will bark to let you know that he wants one immediately! If you want a fun little buddy who will root for your sports team, hang out with you on the couch, and snack with you, this guy is your dog. That said, he is wonderful on leash and great in a car. So, when it's time to work off the calories from eating snacks, he is ready to keep you company on walks and hikes. Mostly, Snarfles is looking for an amazing home who will see the beauty in his heart. He adores attention and is almost surprised when he gets it. He blossoms more every day and will be a fantastic pal for someone. Snaffles is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

I am a gorgeous, sweet, friendly, happy, male, microchipped, young Australian Cattle Dog puppy looking for my forever loving home. I was born September 8th 2016. I am a happy dog, love to run and fetch and be closest to my family all day long - once I find them. I had a bad start into life, my former owner kept me outside as a yard dog and I have been neglected, and not taken care off. I was so thirsty that one day when I found liquid in the yard I tried to drink it to smooth my throat but it burnt so bad before I could swallow and caused chemical burn in my mouth and on my tongue. My rescue came straight for me on New Year's eve and took me ... (Read More)to Southern California Specialty Hospital in Irvine, where the kind Dr. and staff washed my mouth carefully and gave me pain medication and put me on IV fluids as I was dehydrated. They made me stay comfortably over night until I was released to my foster family to heal and enjoy a life and love and TLC and education. I am best suited with an active family, with a secure fenced yard to exercise in and drain my energy. I am a real candidate for a family/person who wants a buddy for hiking, walking, jogging. I am also a real candidate for agility and obedience. Right now I am in need of some training as I am still a puppy, to become the loyal family dog you are looking for. I am not a couch potato at all and physically and mentally best stimulated when I get work. I require regular daily exercise. I am considered a family dog so I am primary indoors. I am smart and intelligent, as my breed belongs to the easy trainable ones - however when there is something in for me - like a treat - I don't say no. My new parents should have breed experience. Enrolling me in a puppy kindergarten class is a great start. Inviting visitors over regularly, and taking me to busy parks, stores that allow dogs, and on leisurely strolls to meet neighbors will also help me polish my social skills. Yours with a happy tailwag! (Less)

She is a friendly girl and is ready to go anywhere her person goes, including out to lunch! Currently she is a fan of hanging out at Starbuck's with her foster ... (Read More)mom. She is polite in the car and is ready to go for a ride. Don't let her age fool you. This breed stays vibrant for a long time. She is plenty of dog to be a wonderful companion. She loves a good walk a few times a day and pulls on the leash since she is having such a good time. She is walking for 30 minutes a few times a day at the moment. Brandy is lovely with others. She is nice with other dogs and even good with cats. She is also polite in the house and is house trained. She will sit when asked, too. Brandi has received a clean bill of health and is in lovely shape. Brandi is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on shots. She is ready for her forever home in SoCal. Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This senior was picked up as a stray... even animal services in Ventura can't understand this one. The subject of the email that notified me of Edison's dilemma, said he was 'AMAZING', and I see why. Edison is absolutely adorable. The photo by the Christmas tree, he was actually surrounded by other dogs at an adoption event. Not phased one bit. I know this guy... not personally, I know who he is. He's smart, mature, knows what is ok and what isn't. He's good with all other animals. He's a Heeler! From Ventura County Animals services: 'He's incredibly smart, knows many commands -- including the high-five, as you can see. To meet this guy is ... (Read More)to fall in love!!!!' Edison is neutered, current on vaccinations and micro-chipped. He's 59 lb, but we'll be working on reducing that figure. Good food (less of it) and some exercise! He loves his pack walks and unbelievably, he swims in the cold creek! Great off or on leash and can get in and out of the van on his own. He sleeps outside or in, and knows how to use the dog door. But I think he learned that here. Edison tolerates the goofy youngsters but, at his age, he'd rather not if he doesn't have to. Likewise, he'd be better with older children. If you're looking for some cool senior company, think about Edison. I want 2017 to be a fantastic year for this good ol' boy! He has always been very submissive to people when inside, but when he's out and about his whole demeanor changes to this confident guy. I have never seen Milo act aggressively towards another dog, even when dogs have growled and snapped at him. He is also very good with my toddler which is a rare trait for the breed. Milo needs someone who can give him lots of exercise. His favorite activity is a game of fetch. He will keep going until his little legs are shaking. He is a good boy, and ... Rescue Me ID: 17-01-04-00449Whiskey (male)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Very High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Whiskey is a very active, 11 month old, 42 lb. cattle dog pup. He is a super playful and fun-loving guy, with a seemingly limitless capacity to play and race around.%A0He loves all variety of toys and is learning to play fetch. He is confident and curious about the world. Because he was not taken out or socialized much before we took him in, he a little cautious and protective when first encountering new things, people and other dogs. However, Whiskey's basic nature is a gentle, submissive dog, who is very friendly and wants to please his people. When he's chill, he is a sweet pup, who enjoys cuddling and giving kisses.%A0 Our guy fits ... (Read More)the classic description of his breed. Whiskey is a very high energy cattle dog, with a lot of stamina. He is a very smart, thinking dog, with the courageous, pushy, persistent quality that is needed to keep the cattle in line. He is strong and athletic, and enjoys being physical. Whiskey has much of what we love about this breed. He has an exuberant, silly nature, and a cattle dog's ability to make you laugh. He also very much wants to please his person, and is extremely loving with the human and canine members of his pack. Whiskey would be a great companion and helper with livestock, or some other daily physical activity. He could be a tireless sport dog for agility, fly ball, etc. Whiskey would love to be in a home with another dog for him to play with. Our boy is so full of puppy energy and loves playing with his canine foster sisters so much, that he can exhaust his playmates. Whiskey is a little mouthy, but he's learning.%A0When playing, he likes to give herding nips to other dogs, in a playful way. In a multi-dog household, Whiskey would need work to learn how to respect and be polite to the other dog(s). Currently, he is an adoring, but pesky little brother to his foster sister. He constantly pounces on her to engage her in play, or leaps on her as he races across the room to fetch a toy. Also, His Pushiness he will try to squeeze himself between his foster dad and his dog sister, while making comical howling sounds. Whiskey has been great with his foster's 11 year old nephew and 13 year old niece. He may be a little too active for young children and toddlers.%A0He also became best buddies with a small, 6 year old, male dog who stayed with them. Because of his rough sense of play, we do not recommend Whiskey for a home with cats. Like a small child Whiskey doesn't want the fun to end. If he is too rambunctious and his foster ushers him into his crate, he will complain with a bark or whine, before finally settling down. However, he will frequently choose go into his crate on his own, when he wants to nap or it's bedtime. Whiskey is mostly quiet, but he can also be vocal, expressing his moods with different sounds.%A0Our boy will often growl his discomfort about new things, which his foster believe will stop, as he learns the ways of the world around him.%A0He will use his cattle dog high pitched bark, when he wants to play. HIs foster is teaching Whiskey to have an inside voice.%A0 Before we rescued him, Whiskey was rapidly growing into a 'teenager' without knowing any rules or boundaries. He did know the basic commands: sit and down, when treats are involved, and come. Although Whiskey is just now beginning to learn proper behaviors in different situations, he can still be a wild child at times. His adopter(s) will need to continue the work we have begun, and be a patient, unwavering leader, who is up to the challenge of providing consistent guidance and training.%A0While Whiskey has a mind of his own, he is now starting to learn boundaries. He seems to be improving a little each day.%A0Once he understands the rules and learns manners, he will grow into a wonderful partner and loyal companion. As with many cattle dog pups, Whiskey is playful mouthy, but learning the proper limits of play. Whiskey is still in his youthful chewing stage, and will need a variety of chew toys to keep him busy during quiet time inside. As a curious, explorer, he will follow his nose and get into trash and things within his reach. Fortunately, he takes reprimands and corrections quite well from both his canine and human fosters. Whiskey does NOT guard food or resources (toys, treats, special person). When he knows he has done wrong, he becomes very submissive. It seems Whiskey was never exposed to the sights and sounds of a neighborhood. On his first few walks, he seemed quite insecure and defensive, growling, pulling and barking at nearly everything he encountered. He is now learning how to behave when encountering other dogs, and fast moving things, but is still very alert and tense when outside the safety and familiarity of the house.%A0He will need continued, regular, exposure to everyday life in order to gradually become more confident and calm on walks. Whiskey enjoys car rides, but continues to be alert and vocal about unfamiliar things outside. (Less)

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Seizures

[Read About Natural Seizure Care] This darling girl is Nettie. She is a Cattledog/Border Collie mix who was born into rescue. Because she is a special needs girl, she needs a special home. Nettie weight about 40 pounds and is a happy girl. She loves people and loves to play with other dogs. Nettie has lots of friends. She plays and runs around the yard with other dogs (see the video). She is also polite with cats. She is a very social girl with people, too. She is good in the car and is a favorite at the pet food store and vet's office. Nettie knows to go to her crate for bed-time. She also knows sit. She is house trained and appreciates a ... (Read More)schedule that allows her to go out a bit more frequently than some other dogs. Nettie's herding dog smarts are helping her to adjust to a case of epilepsy that came upon her as a younger puppy. With regular medication and comfort in her environment, Nettie's seizures have been under control. She seeks a home with people who are home more than not, like to have fun and cuddle on a very pretty and soft girl, and will keep up the structure that keeps her happy and healthy. She would also like a home where she can be on the furniture, since she does like to act like a mountain goat from time to time. With a face like that, who minds? Nettie is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped. She is ready to meet potential adoptive homes in SoCal. A home visit and a vet reference are required. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-12-06-00427GRACE (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Grace is a 2-3 year old, 38 lb., cattle dog/border collie mix, with a low to moderate energy level. She's extremely sweet and affectionate once she feels she can trust you. More than anything, she wants to be loved and close to her person. She'll jump up to hug and give you sweet kisses. Currently, everything around her is new and overwhelming to her. Grace is very shy, and extremely cautious and nervous when meeting new people. Grace's fosters have been working with her every day on training, and to socialize her. She is as smart as they come, loves her training sessions, and is fun to train. As a loving, eager to please girl, she a fast ... (Read More)learner, who has come very far in her training over the last eight weeks. She knows her name, sit, down, touch, jump, hi five and shake. Her recall is also good. In one night her fosters taught her to crawl, and to roll to her side to settle. Grace's training mostly takes place in the house, where she is most comfortable. She would benefit from work with a one on one trainer, and brain games. Grace is our Eliza Doolittle. She was found as a terrified stray, who avoided all creatures. Besides being initially fearful of unknown people, she seems to have had no prior training, and no social skills and likely no past interactions with other dogs. She is very awkward and stiff, as if unsure about how to behave with another dog. She tends to rush over to other dogs and freezes up; and when they move, she will immediately try to herd or control their movements. Grace does not know how to play with other dogs and is not interested in fetch or toys at all. She has only recently learned to play tug with her fosters. For fun, she enjoys her chewing items and receiving attention from her humans. When you cuddle with her, Grace melts in your arms and is big on giving kisses, and rolls over to ask for belly rubs. If you pull your hands away while petting her, she will begin to burrow into your arms or lap. She wants to be a lap dog! During most of the day, she is in the house where she is most relaxed and happy. Grace is calm in the house and crate. She is able to entertain herself with interactive food toys and marrow bones. However, she wants TONS of attention before she'll self entertain or settle. As she is feeling more secure, she is now settling much more quickly. For exercise, her fosters take Grace to an enclosed field to run around. Grace has made great strides, and can walk or play in a park for up to 30 minutes. At first, she would melt down after 10-15 minutes, from the cars, noise, people and dogs. Grace is completely housebroken. She may hold it for hours, if she is someplace where she is not comfortable. Grace is also getting more relaxed on car rides, since nearly all her rides have been to do fun things. We recommend that she ride in a crate when in the car. When meeting new people, Grace is quite cautious and will usually hide behind her person. She will warm up to you, if you go slow and give her space. People first meeting her should ignore her or toss treats from a distance. Grace is very sensitive to prolonged eye contact from new people. She will growl to communicate that she feels uneasy, but nothing more. Since Grace has a tough time meeting people in general, we do not recommend her for a home with children. Quick movements get her hackles up and she wants to chase. She reacts this way with squirrels and cats encountered on walks. We have a herding aptitude test scheduled for her. Grace walks fairly nicely on leash, until there is a trigger (seeing a cat, dogs walking on leash or barking behind fences). She will bark, pull, and lunge. Her fosters are working on this reactivity, and report that she is making good progress, with much less barking and pulling in these situations. We see Grace as basically a submissive dog. However, she is still socially awkward. Her fosters believe she will eventually be fine with other polite or disinterested, adult dogs, but to get there, all dog meetings must be positive experiences. Until she becomes more dog social, we don't recommend her in a home with other dogs, especially young energetic ones. In summary, Grace is a sweet, loving girl, who has endured extreme unknown trauma. She needs plenty of TLC, patience, reassurance, time, encouragement, and slow positive exposure to new things, to learn how to be happy and confident. Grace is making excellent progress with her fosters, but her adopter(s) will need to continue the work. She is NOT for a novice dog owner. Grace's fosters feel she would be be happy in a home with a small yard and a person who enjoys training activities. In the yard, she should not be left alone. If stressed, she may dig and attempt to escape. Grace's foster also does NOT recommend her for someone with an active (running, hiking) lifestyle, or who wants to take her everywhere with them. If you are interested in meeting Grace, please complete our adoption form at hittgv.org (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-11-27-00556Cisco (male)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Cisco is approximately 3 years old and weighs 45 lbs. He is a charming, incredibly loving, smart, silly, playful and sometimes pushy cattle dog, who adores human attention. Cisco's natural core personality is a submissive, goofy, impish guy with a fun loving sense of humor. He loves cuddling, and often wakes up his foster mom in the morning with a sweet cuddle and kisses. As a cattle dog, he quickly bonds with 'his' people and dogs and wants to be right next to them all the time. He is very responsive and super obedient, with an overwhelming desire to do the right thing and please. He is easy when handled 'ۥ and allows his fosters to ... (Read More)touch his ears, face, and paws easily. When petted, he relaxes and often lays down for belly rubs (which he loves). However, he is also a work in progress. Due to his unknown traumatic past, he can be extremely reactive when first encountering some dogs and people. Once he gets over his initial reactiveness and figures out that he is safe, he is fun and super loving with people and other dogs. For this reason, he is only available to adopters who have extensive experience working with reactive dogs. It is clear that before we rescued Cisco, he was never exposed to or learned things that most household dogs know from an early age. We do not believe he had ever been walked on leash before coming to us. He tends to wander from side to side, but is learning how to walk nicely on leash. He will tug hard when he reacts to another dog or sees a squirrel, but he is mostly gentle and easygoing on leash. Cisco, also did not know how to play with toys when we first rescued him, but now he has his favorites. Initially, he was nervous about getting in the car, but he has learned to enjoy car rides to fun destinations. He will ride nicely in the backseat or in the front as your co-pilot. Cisco has two HITTGV fosters working with him. As he is being exposed to positive and fun new experiences, and is learning new things, his fosters can see his confidence grow each day. After being reactive when he first met his fosters' dogs, and was nervous about his male foster, he settled in to great relationships with both foster people and their dogs. Cisco does have a difficult time when seeing some dogs and people during walks, and we have opted to use a soft muzzle for him, because in his panicked response to seeing unfamiliar dogs, he sometimes reacts by pulling and snapping indiscriminately, and may accidentally bite those standing nearest to him. His fosters are working with professional trainers, and are making progress in reducing Cisco's reactiveness. At his foster home, Cisco has shown great manners in the house (he's house trained). He is very observant, and a super smart, quick learner, and quickly learned several basic commands%BD%BD%BD'%BDsit, stay, off, leave it, etc. He now sits patiently before he gets his food and to have his leash put on. At mealtimes, once he's done eating, he waits politely for his foster sisters to finish eating before he goes over to lick and polish both their bowls to a high shine. He has a crate that he willingly goes into when told 'in your bed.' He will sometimes take naps in it on his own. He loves to engage his foster sisters in play with them, but he doesn't show any possessiveness over toys or other resources. He can be pushy with other dogs, but in a friendly, cattle dog way. He is mostly submissive with his foster sisters, but will sometimes take toys away from them. He would need to be paired with a happy, tolerant dog who wouldn't mind this, as he learns more manners. Our boy is full of personality. He has a cheerful and goofy sense of play. He enjoys both roughhousing and gentle play with each of his canine foster sisters. He loves wrestling and playing 'bitey face' with other dogs, and shows very good bite inhibition. He will sometimes playfully (not hard) grab their legs or tails in his mouth. He is a bit klutzy, and his comical nature, makes his fosters laugh throughout the day. Cisco enjoys carry his foster mom's socks around the house - he doesn't chew or destroy them, just likes to parade around with them. He requires daily exercise, but once he gets it, he is generally relaxed and calm for the rest of the day. He seems to have a little separation anxiety, as he does not like to be left alone. Cisco IS an adorable and loving young dog, with one major issue. He requires a patient and knowledgeable adopter who can gently train him, while building his trust and confidence, and discouraging his reactive tendencies. Every meeting with new dogs and people, needs to be a positive one, to help teach him that life is good and not to react to other dogs. If you are interested in meeting Cisco, Please first complete our adoption form. It is the first step of our adoption process. It is at our website: hittgv.org.     Meet Angus, a handsome, 7 year old Cattledog mix. He is a fun, active guy looking for a home where he can be an active partner. For those who know this breed, you will know that this is an ideal age. He is full of action but has none of the puppy craziness that lasts in Cattledogs for the first few years. Angus is polite and ready for adventure. Angus is smart, as you would expect with this breed, and has had some professional training. He is good on leash and rides nicely in the car. He is also crate trained and house trained. He would be a wonderful work-out buddy. He is all that you would anticipate. He is loyal and looks to his ... (Read More)person to engage with him. He does alert when someone comes to the house, so it is helpful if someone has breed experience to know how to thank him for alerting and then ask him to stand down. Angus is a social guy and enjoys companionship with his people. He is nice with men, women, and even children. He has been around horses and other dogs and does well. He is an affectionate guy who also loves to play. Squeaky toys are a big hit with him. Angus is ready for his forever home. Breed experience and a vet check are required to adopt Angus. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 16-11-20-00205Rojo (female)

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Rojo is a wonderful 9 month old red heeler mix. She was rescued from a kill shelter in San Antonio, and driven her back to California in late June of this year. She is quick as a whip - super smart, eager to please and loving. She was an ease to potty train, and learned her basic commands ( sit, stay, come, let's go, tap) in just one or two lessons. She knows 'in your house' for her kennel, and 'in your bed' for her crate. She is currently is working on her mat and muzzle training, and has learned to open the back door to let herself out for her business, Though she can very shy, and sometimes fearful of strangers -- she is incredibly ... (Read More)loving and loyal to 'her people', and is one of the most affectionate heelers we've known. Her energy level is good, but on the lower side for a ACD her age. Though she is playful, she spends a good deal of the day napping. When left alone uncrated for short periods of up to 3 hours, she displays no unusual or undesirable behavior (though she does appreciate a good chew toy/antler). She does display consistent fear of other dogs as well as aggressive resource guarding around food, and toys. She has been working with a trainer on her social fears, and is able to tolerate other dogs at a distance of 20 feet, It is recommended Rojo be placed in a single dog household. Rojo has very little experience with other pets, and with children. Rojo has displayed inconsistencies with her fear of people. She is often (but not always) fearful of strangers, and displays the greatest fear toward large bearded men, and women with loud pitchy voices. That being said, she does really well with after she feel safe around a new person - this often takes two calm and treat oriented visits for her to loos her inhibitions. It is assumed this pup had a difficult first 3 months as a stray on the streets of San Antonio, and displays fear reactions in over stimulating environments, She has been working with a trainer on integrating her into city life. She takes regular walks in safe areas to work on her fear of the unknown, and it seems she is making progress. That being said, we believe she will do much better in a less stressful/stimulating environment. She would also need to be placed in a household that is familiar with the cattle dog breed. Rojo has been spayed and is current on all of her medical needs. We are happy to arrange transportation for perspective adopters. Questions are welcome, We are willing to offer any information needed by prospective adopters to help ensure she has a happy, loving, and safe forever home.' (Less)

5 year old neutered male Queensland heeler mix that we are seeking a new home for. Looking for a loving home for this very smart, very loyal dog. Loves people but doesn't like our male jack Russell (this is why we are re-homing him). Would probably chase cats, so would be better in a home without cats or other dogs. Small children would not be a good match since he has a very strong herding instinct and would chase and likely knock them down. Needs lots of exexcise and gets anxious if not exercised enough.     This seriously handsome boy is Ollie, a one year old Australian Cattledog/German Shepherd mix. He is a handsome 50 pounds boy looking for a quiet yet active home. As you would expect, Ollie is a very smart boy. He knows his commands: down, stay, sit, and come. He also knows tricks! Crawl and spin. He has been started in agility, too. He loves to learn and train and enjoys focusing on the partnership with his person. Ollie is polite. He is house and crate trained. He is polite in the car and walks nicely on leash. Then, when the adventure and activity are over, he likes to cuddle on the couch with his person. Ollie is looking for a stable, quiet home who will be patient with him. He came from a tough situation as a pup, has made great progress, and is ready for a wonderful home. He starts out shy, then warms up. He is more shy with men, so would even like a home with a woman and perhaps a quieter guy. He also prefers to be the only pet in the house. If there is another quiet dog and the owner takes time with the introduction, he can be good with a dog sibling. Ollie is neutered, microchipped, up to date on his vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

High energy, lovable dog I rescued from the SPCA 3 months ago. She is an amazing cuddlier, house trained, and great with humans. She is also fine with dogs off leash outdoors, occasionally plays rough or aggressive with small reactive type dogs. However, she is very reactive on leash and despite intensive training for 3 months is unable o be near other dogs on the street or in an enclosed space with other dogs. These situations cause her to get very anxious and stressed and become aggressive. She has never marked or actually bitten another dog but makes alot of noise/growling/barking and pins the other dog. For this reason also I recommend ... (Read More)no small children in the house although she has been around children and very playful. I love her dearly and will only give her to another home that is rural or backyard and can reduce the stressful times she has to be around other dogs on leash (like she has to do in my city apartment). She also requires daily outdoor running and playing. She loves to fetch sticks, play tug o war, swim and is overall an extremely goofy, playful fun dog. Please only contact if serious and experienced dog owner. Contact me by email and I can respond with phone number. (Less)

Nina is a 7 year old cattle dog mix who is in foster care. She is a wonderful dog but her foster, and primary caregiver, a 73 year old gentleman who is quite active. And caring for her the past few months, can no longer. Prior to this time (6 years ago), Nina was taken in when it was discovered she'd been living in a cage at her veterinarian's office for a year. Nina began getting daily walks and continued to live at the vet hospital. After 6 months, a home was found for Nina. Recently, following the July 4th holiday, Nina's saviors found she'd been taken to the Carson Shelter. Her owners had divorced and Nina was traumatized and ... (Read More)began escaping from her new residence. They no longer wanted her. The original person who got her out of that cage at the vets is now who is 83 years old, bailed her out again and after a few months found the foster home she is in now. It was hoped this would be a forever home, but Nina's foster informed us recently that Nov 15th is the last day she can remain with them. Nina will not be put back in a cage! Spent too much of her life this way. She is a well-trained, wonderful dog! She loves life! She loves walks, hikes, car rides, or just being at home with her family. Nina loves children so she would be great with a family, or just one person. She is a young 7-8 year old -- Energetic & happy! She will a best friend for someone.     Special needs girl needs special home. Honey was found near death in a mud puddle in a field across from my home after her previous owner dumped her off to die.     Sweet Roxy is a cute, smart girl looking for a home. She is about 2 years old, UTD on vaccines and recently spayed. She gets along with others dogs, but can be dominant. Roxy just loves to play with the big dogs. Good with children. This little lady has great leash manners and would be a wonderful hiking partner. I think in an active, breed savvy home this little girl would flourish. Is there room in your heart and home for Sweet Roxy? Please contact: Linda. 775-530-1752. Loveygwiz@sbcglobal.net

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Named Lucky because he truly is, this guy is a 5 year old Australian Cattledog who weighs about 27 pounds. Lucky is the kind of dog whose love you earn and, when you do, he is your best friend forever. He has had a rough time of it and a good samaritan stepped in to help him. Lucky, indeed. Now, he is looking for a home who doesn't mind taking it just a bit slow at first. Simple little things make all of the difference to him, such as talking to him before coming up to him, so he knows you are coming his way. Gentle leadership will help him relax and become even more wonderful than he already is. His foster mom wishes that she had fewer ... (Read More)dogs, so she could keep him. Lucky is a typically Cattledog in that he sometimes wonders about bigger dogs. He likes small dogs and would be fine with another medium-larger dog who isn't interested in being number one. Lucky is a smart guy. He learned his name in under a week. We don't know what his name was before he came to us. Also, he is house trained. He knows his basic commands: sit, stay, quiet, and come. He is initially excited to go on an adventure, but stops pulling on the leash after just a bit. He will walk right at your side, ready for whatever fun is in store. He does love car rides. He thinks that he would like to help drive by sitting on your lap. So, he is learning to stay on his side and will benefit from a dog seatbelt or crate in the car. Mostly, Lucky is a guy who wants a committed relationship. He has a cute smile, missing one tooth. When happy, he will come up and put his head on your chest. If you lay down on the floor, he is likely to come up and lay curled up against your arm. Once he loves, he loves deeply. Lucky is neutered and is current on his rabies vaccination. He will be up to date on his other vaccinations and microchipped before adoption. Lucky is ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to our favorite rescue partners. (Less)

Anubis is an extremely loyal and loving dog. He'll bond with you and follow you everywhere. You won't need to worry about this one running off. You'll be part of his pack in no time. He's very obedient and really ready to please. He's trained to sit, stay, leave it, be quiet, lay down and high five. He's a little dog shy, but generally does well. He doesn't love big crowds, but does very well with people. He's 8-9 years old (I'm not sure because I adopted him) We love him and are sad to be looking for a home for him, but we have two other dogs and he guards food around dogs.     This beautiful and spunky six year old cattle dog/shepherd mix is Bella. Bella is incredibly loyal and attentive, and loves to show how well she can sit, share a paw, 'leave it' and lay down. She has been housebroken since she was very young and always lets someone know when she needs a potty break. Bella is also excellent on a leash and has a lot of energy so walks and jogs are her favorite activities. She is happiest around 'family', since she's a shy and anxious girl and being surrounded by new people is stressful for her. When she's feeling stressed or scared, Bella likes to seek out cozy tight spaces and will also bark when strangers ... (Read More)are around to protect her home and family, but she NEVER bites. She plays well with other dogs but has never spent much time with children.     Say 'hi' to Ted... quietly, he nervous! Ted has been here a while now, but oh, the progress! Looking normal much of the time now. Follows you everywhere off leash. Routine oriented. He's blowing me away. Longest I have ever had a foster, but the things he's taught me are invaluable! He's about 2, Queensland / Catahoula combo. Beautiful guy, one blue eye. Ted came here with his sister/mother, who knows, Tessa from the small Orange Cove Shelter, in July 2014. Sometimes I wish I knew a dog's story. How could they be SO shut down?! Ted was one of those dogs. He's fearful and under socialized. Been working with him, and experience has proven ... (Read More)that they are all reachable. The kind of progress I'm grateful for, he now instigates play with dogs, loves sleeping on a dog bed inside and knows how to navigate the dog door, and is housebroken. He's not terrified of me anymore! Eats grass on walks... walks on a leash. I can pet him... I'm tellin' ya, it's the little things that are enormous with some of these guys! Now when we walk, Ted is so close he bumps into the back of my legs, and I feel his breath on the back of my hand... Ted just needs a special adopter, one who might understand Ted is special. He could just be left alone to exist, but I would love to see him with someone that would touch him every day, take him on walks, expose him to things. This is when I've seen the most improvements. Exposure to everything! Immersion. Was a huge deal to even force him to sleep in a dog bed next to me! Once he did for a few days, he expected it! Routine is key! Dogs are incredible, you can reach them through routine. Still working and he has all the time he needs... She initially blended into our 'pack' of a male Boxer and a female Pitt mix while we looked for her owner(s). We made mistakes -- being naive about the attention needs and energy levels of not only her breed (we're going by 'looks' for breed) but of our two 'home dogs'. We did not 'drain' Rain's energy sufficiently to maintain balance in the 'pack'. Rain and the Pitt mix can not be alone with one another as they have fought. She does well with the Boxer. It's unclear if it's ... (Read More)because of being male or because of his non-alpha temperament. She has also played well with a male lab on a few occasions. We know she has growled and snarled at visitors, but it's also unclear if that comes from insecurity or from some negative experience she's had. Bottom line: We're sorry we can not keep her. If we didn't have two 'high energy' dogs, or just the Boxer, we DEFINITELY would keep Rain. We want her to find a safe, caring, balanced 'pack leader' who understands (better than we did) the need for exercise for her breed. Rain needs 'a job'. Our 'pack' needs stability returned. She rides EXTREMELY well in the cars. She tethers well when needed. Walks fairly well on lead. Comes when called better than any other dog we've had. She is SWEET and BRIGHT. Rain is a great little dog. (Less)

This little character is Fin, a 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier mix. At 22 pounds, he is a small guy with mass amounts of personality! Fin has learned a lot of house manners. He is house and crate trained. He knows sit and 'to your bed' when it's time for the crate. He is wonderful in the car and on leash. He learns so fast that he may have learned something new by the time you are reading this. He also LOVES his blankeys! He loves to bury himself in his blankets and pillows. He's also a goof - very wiggly and snuggly and affectionate once he gets to know you. Fin enjoys casual hikes or long strolls through the neighborhood. Once he gets to ... (Read More)know his person, he is even good off leash on a hike. Fin is a big guy in a small package. He needs a home where his people aren't pushovers. If he gets an inch, he will take a mile. Therefore, he is looking for a home that understands that some dogs feel best when they have a lot of structure. He also is looking for a home where he is a buddy rather than a teddy bear. He will do best hanging out with his person but not being cuddled and coddled. A home without kids is required. He lives with other animals and gets along well. Just like with people, he does best when his animal friends aren't pushovers. In order to help Fin be the best he can be, he has been enrolled in professional training where his obedience skills have been refined. He has received additional socialization with dogs and people, too. He will always be a one or two person kind of dog rather than the super social, love everyone kind of guy. If you want devoted, he is definitely that. HIs foster mom says that he has a way of becoming a part of your heart, so even with his need for structure, he is well worth it. He will come with a few sessions of training with his new person and current trainer so that his transition to a new home is smooth and effective. The training is included in his adoption fee. Fin is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to local rescues. Fin is a SoCal kind of guy and loves the weather here. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

lnteresting Australian Cattle Dog Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Cattle Dogs were bred by 19th century Australian pioneers to herd cattle on large ranches. Most Australian Cattle Dogs have a star-shaped marking on their foreheads called the Bentley Mark, after dog owner Thomas Bentley, whose purebred dog supposedly passed this mark on to all genuine Australian Cattle Dogs. Australian Cattle Dogs are excellent at catching frisbees. Australian Cattle Dogs are descended from several different breeds, including Dalmatians and Smithfield Collies, which are now thought to be extinct.
