Rescue Me ID: 15-08-27-00594Zeke (male)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

This is Zeke, a 7-8 year old Australian Cattledog who is lucky enough to still have his fabulous cattledog tail. He weighs about 40 pounds. Zeke is a very good boy looking for a best friend. His current people have some life changes that make it hard to keep Zeke. They want to find a great home for him. Zeke is a polite boy, house broken, and would like to hang out with you on the couch and watch television. He would also love to go on hikes and jogs, or anywhere you are going. He loves his people and likes to take part in whatever they have going on. He also likes to play with his people. A rousing game of fetch is a definite yes for ... (Read More)Zeke! He loves balls, bones, and a good game of tug-of-war. Zeke is a good boy on outings. He is also good with strangers. That said, we don't know how Zeke is around kids because he hasn't been around kids. Therefore, a home with smaller kids may not be a great fit. Older kids would likely be fine. Zeke could be a dog park superstar. He loves other dogs and wants to play with them. He will ride politely in the car on the way there and is a nice boy on leash, too. At one time, Zeke lived with a cat and they got along well. We think he would be fine with a new cat friend. In short, Zeke is wonderful. He knows how to settle down in the house but is always ready to go do something, too. He knows his commands: sit, down, no, and back off. He is a well balanced personality. Zeke is currently located in Simi Valley and he is ready for the right home. A home visit and vet reference are required. Please, no applications outside of Southern California. This guy is a California guy and likes the weather here. (Less)

1 1/2 yr. Queensland Heeler mix, rescue (Paso Robles) Here comes AZ! She was found hanging out at a truck stop / chili joint... sleeping behind a dumpster. She had been there a couple weeks. She's chilling with the new pack, and her traveling buddy,. phoenix from Parlier. We already know, she puts up with lots of jack Russell Terriers! And now, a crew of larger, herding dogs. Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Barley is a small 4 year old 'blue' Queensland healer with unique tricolor black and red coloration. She is playful, athletic, loyal, and loves to hike, fetch, swim, backpack, and catch Frisbees. She is of medium energy level and knows how to relax quietly as well as play hard. As with many healers, she can be fearful around new people and kids wanting to pet her. She has a very effective alarm bark but is otherwise on the quiet side. She's good at avoiding conflicts with people and pets, but would be most relaxed and best suited for someone who is active and without young kids, and who is familiar with the breed and the use of positive ... (Read More)training techniques. She has an obvious herding drive and has been around livestock and horses on occasion though she's never been taught or tested as a herder. She would also probably shine if introduced to agility. She is spayed, potty trained, good on and off leash, responds to basic commands, and is in excellent health. If you are interested in learning more about Barley and possibly meeting her, please contact Matt and Claire at 650-380-2965 or cchouinard9779@aol.com.     Gilbert loves cuddles! He melts in your lab and loves putting his head on your knee for some good old neck rubs. Gilbert loves people, kids, dogs, cats, you name it, he loves it. He is so sweet and silly. He is so excited whenever he sees you, he wiggles his entire little butt. Sometimes he is so excited that he wags himself in the face with his own tail. I adopted Gilbert through an adoption event at PetSmart, unfortunately, I live in a condo and it does not provide enough space for Gilbert.     A couple years old. Snoop was surrendered (I have to say dumped) at the Downey Shelter, his owners were moving. He didn't pass temperament test... because he was visibly upset and scared when he was brought into the kennels, chewed at the leash and balked... a natural reaction. This was a family dog that had no idea what was happening to him. He was in a loud scary place with strangers and the smell of fear, death and disease all around him. Sorry to drive it home, but this is the reality of what these dogs experience. If they have half a brain and some sensitivity, of course this is going to freak a dog out. It's like prison, except, ... (Read More)they are actually innocents. Somehow, he got the attention of a very concerned group of people, who beat me into submission, and Snoop was welcomed into Central Coast Herding Dog Rescue, even though he probably an Akita or Chow mix. He looks to have a little Aussie in him. Regardless, Snoop was saved, neutered, flown to Paso Robles (Thank you Pilots and Paws... but now, he has to put up with a bunch of fun dogs and some kids that love him. Poor guy. Snoop has adjusted beautifully and obviously ecstatic to be here. He's interested in engaging with us, and curious about the pack. He's social, and sweet, even playful now. He jumped up on me today! And I let him! Snoop is doing so well. I'm really glad he's here. He'll be great. Needs to put on a few pounds. You can't tell in the photos (big hair) but he probably quit eating when he was abandoned. He ate a cooked chicken breast from my fingers at the airport when I picked him up. Gentle as anything too. This beautiful guy is going to be fantastic and he'll have a second chance for a good life with a family that will love him the rest of his days.     This darling girl is Hanna, a very sweet lady who is looking for a fantastic forever home. Hanna is a 4-5 year old girl. She was found as a stray and has been a momma before. Now, she is ready to live life as a pampered pet to someone. Hanna is good with cats and small-medium dogs. She lives with two Chihuahuas, a cat, and a Cattledog in her current foster home. She has even been extra kind to the Cattledog who has a bad leg. That said, she may be snippy with larger dogs. We don't know if she simply doesn't love the larger dog she lives with or isn't into larger dogs. Either way, at the vet's office, she was very polite despite all of the ... (Read More)noise and commotion. She appears to be good with polite children, too. Hanna has shown that she is ready for some training. She has been doing great with her house training. She finds her bed and sleeps quietly at night. Hanna was obviously an outside dog but is quickly adapting to being a great family pet. As mentioned, she is learning to be polite in the house. She has also proven to be polite in the car. Mostly, Hanna is a wiggle butt, with a short tail, showing lots of happiness with her foster mom. She is not a barker unless there is a reason. She wiggles, whines, and cries when someone comes home. She craves petting, like head rubs and back scratching. Hanna is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. She resides in Southern CA and is ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. Out of area adopters will be happily referred to local rescues. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

She is a very sweet and loving dog who is active. She has silky shiny black hair. Josie loves running and we didn't have her herding sheep but we know she has the skills with the right owner to teach her, she always tried to herd our other dog a Shepard mix, it was so funny, she did great pushing him around and trying to put him in certain area. Josie loves people, but small hyper children make her anxious and you have to keep an eye on her. She is super sweet with our 9 yr. old, fetch the ball and gives many kisses. She doesn't like cats or is house trained. She is ok with some dogs but not with the dominant aggressive kind. We never ... She would do great with someone who loves training and teaching and has an area for her to run and play freely, best a ranch with people who knows how to train cattle dogs to herd.     Made it here in a day! Rooke is about 2 1/2 yrs old, and from Shafter, CA. Surrendered by his owner for... no reason. He passed all temperament tests at the shelter. He adores people. When he got here, he really didn't want a bunch of dogs in his face, and he just let them know to back up. Since the pack doesn't want to play with a dog that has no interest, quickly, Rooke was curious about the others, and viola, he is now a pack dog. He came on the walk with the dogs he rode here with, Vader and Chewey, along with the resident pack members. I let him ride shotgun so as not to overwhelm the boy, but on the ride back, he jumped in the back ... (Read More)of the van with the others. No problems. Just a bunch of cooled off, tired, quiet dogs. Rooke likes the water, and I'm not so sure he's ever even seen a body of water let alone been allowed to play and swim in it off leash! He did great. Typical heeler, no worries of him running off. Rooke hasn't come in the house yet, but once he figures out the dog door, he can have at it. A beautiful example of a pure bred Queensland Heeler, conformation, size, he's perfect! Rooke is a very respectful gentle boy, who would be fine with a family of a single person, loves to be with people. And he'd be fine with another dog too. These photos show him loving the open spaces, creek and pack! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1648907781991961.1073742178.1428374324045309&type=1&l=9068ba6733 Rooke's adoption fee is $250 to cover his neuter, current vaccinations, micro-chip registration and 45 days of health insurance. Rescue Me ID: 15-07-20-00370Mango (male)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Mango is a gorgeous 46 lb. hunk, who at 18 months old, still has a very puppy-like personality. He is very friendly with all people (men and women, alike), great with other dogs, and loves to play with everyone. He is very happy and enthusiastic, always wagging his tail. Mango loves water - in all ways. He loves the beach, a creek, jumping into a pool, water from a hose, etc. He also enjoys playing with stuffed toys, and does NOT destroy them. And, he is an absolute ball playing and fetching dog! Our boy has a very balanced and confident personality, and is neither dominant or submissive. He meets new people politely, and is not all ... (Read More)over you. Mango is very attentive, and is definitely a cuddler and a velcro dog, who loves human attention and being close to you. Depending on the amount of exercise he is given, Mango is a moderate to moderately high energy dog. He is extremely smart and learns very quickly. Mango knows several commands, including sit, stay, twist, twirl, spin, drop it, touch, gentle. As a very young cattle dog, he will need quite a bit of exercise and activity to occupy his busy brain, and is NOT a dog to be left alone for 8 hours each day. He would be a fantastic sport dog. He has done a little flyball. His love of playing in water, plus the fact that he is more motivated by a ball than food, makes him an ideal dog for splash ball! Mango is completely housebroken and is a perfect passenger in the back seat of a car. He walks well on leash, but if he has not had enough exercise, he may pull a bit. When on leash, if he sees other dogs he wants to meet, he will often pull and cry. If other dogs are in view, and you keep him walking at a brisk pace, he will usually be fine. Mango is very good with children. If children are running, he will begin to run after them, but if they stop or freeze, Mango will stop too. If they continue to run he may try to herd them, by pushing or bumping them. As mentioned, he loves playing with other dogs, and can be vocal when playing. Also, when he is feeling playful, and you are not paying attention, he may give a few barks to let you know it's time to play. Although we have not seen him with cats, we were told he wants to chase. Mango would be fine in a multi-dog household. However, in is desire for the attention of his people, he will sometimes try to hog the attention by squeezing himself between his person and another dog. (Less)

We are leaving the country and Rusty is difficult to find a home for. He is very loving with us most of the time, but he has a bit of an aggressive streak. He has nipped (bit once) a few people on his territory (never family). When we walk him, he does fine. He gets along with other dogs. When we got him as a puppy, we had a cat until the cat died when he was about a year and a half and he was fine. Stays on property, no problem. Spends lots of time in the house, all night with no problems. He did not grow up around children, so they make him nervous. If you know how to deal with aggressive behaviour, he can be a great dog.

My dog Scout needs a loving home. She is a 61 lb lab/australian cattle dog mix. 3 years old. To be totally honest, she recently had an incident with a family member's chihuahua, so that is why I need to give her up. I absolutely love this dog. She is my greatest friend, and I will be heartbroken to leave her. She is SO sweet and snuggly. She's a bit timid and will make you work for her love, but once you get it, she's your total companion. She knows 'sit,' 'down,' and even 'pound it!' I'd like to find a single person, couple, or family with older kids who would be willing to work with her minor aggression. All she needs is a couple ... (Read More)sessions with a trainer. She's not good with little dogs, but plays great with big dogs at the dog park. She's been to college and even has an instagram. It is so painful for me to do this, so please serious inquiries. I need to ensure she goes to a good home, so I'd like to do a house visit. Free to a good home. ALSO-she is spayed and up to date on all her shots. Please email or text with any questions! (Less)

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Copper is a good boy. He is mostly an outside dog, but has been in the house multiple times without an accident. He sits and walks on a leash. He is not a barker, although he will bark when needed. He needs a new home due to job loss, a yard is no longer an option. Copper gets along with smaller dogs, but needs some socialization with big dogs. He has not been around cats or livestock. Copper is not shy, but like all Cattle Dogs may be wary with strangers until he gets to know you. Please give him a chance.

Denga is Portuguese slang for young woman with many desires. She is obedient, watchful and calm. She got along well with my miniature dachshund. She belongs to a neighbor who inherited her from her late brother. Mary wants to go back home to Brazil, but to her, her brother's dog is like his child and so she wants to find a good home for her. Denga does have a habit of sort of nibbling the edge of furniture, but I couldn't find any damage. (A couch cover does its job.) (Mary doesn't have a computer, so I am relaying messages to her.)

Bea is an amazing dog. She loves chasing balls and running in fields. She is a great little explorer. She is wicked smart and has basic training. She has shown some food aggression, mostly towards other dogs; for this reason I think she'd be best suited to a single dog household. She loves people and is very well socialized. I love this dog but she does not get along with a rescue I took on. She could also use more space and stimulation than what I can offer. Please let me know if you have any questions about her!

Australian Cattle Dog    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Very High Energy
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Arthritis, Fearful/Anxious

Sheila has been with us since she was about 12 weeks old. After adopting her and getting her used to us, she revealed herself as very nervous and high-strung. At first, she would show submissive behavior all the time, even to cats. She is still submissive to certain new adults she meets and to larger, confident dogs. But, she is aggressive towards submissive (especially smaller) dogs. She had surgery a few years ago to correct a coronoid process in her right elbow. She has arthritis still, but it doesn't bother her unless she is allowed to play rough with other dogs for long periods. She is fine with running and has a strong chase instinct. ... (Read More) We recommend that she not be trusted with children as she doesn't like to be hugged and gets nervous with a lot of commotion. She would do best with a strong, male master who can be with her most of the time and can show her who is boss. She would do well on a ranch or a big property but would need to get used to being around horses and livestock. (Less)

W have a beautiful dog, who has been in our lives for 5 years. Having recently lost our dog of 15.5 years, we adopted Cali from the SPCA as she charmed us with her exuberance and interaction. And she was beautiful - a cross between a cattle dog and a corgi, long legs, alert eyes and ears, bushy tail and a spotted red and white coat. She made friends with the neighbor dogs - there is even a video on youtube of her playing tether ball with her friend Poppy. She had a yard to play in, a 'puppy empowerment portal' (doggie door) to get there, trails to hike nearby and clean streets to walk on leash. We have divorced - very amicably - and ... (Read More)have just sold our house and will be moving out in May. We had a friend who had just lost his dog and he graciously took Cali in while we prepped the house. And he fell in love with her. But he lives in the city - in a not so clean section of Oakland. Now, when Cali walks, she is fixated on finding scraps of food on the route. Nearby parks are littered with chicken bones, so rather than playing, she spends her time hunting bones. His house has a studio downstairs where people often come to play music. Her protective nature gets the better of her and she has to spend a lot of time upstairs, cut off from the action downstairs. My ex and I will also be moving to the city. The three of us have done a lot of soul searching and have come to the conclusion that we cannot keep Cali. It is simply not fair to her. She deserves to be in an area where she can run and play and not be distracted by junk on the sidewalk or in the park grass. She is too smart and energetic to be kept cooped up. Cali's good traits: She is beautiful. Folks always say she looks like a fox. She is loyal. She loves the people she knows and follows us all around. She is good on trails and doesn't run off. She is good with other dogs at the beach, on trails, at doggy day care when she goes. She is SMART! One can actually see the wheels turn in her head. She learns tricks in about 30 minutes. She had an opportunity to try out an agility course and mastered 3 activities in an hour! The trainer was impressed. She is active. She loves hiking, the beach, playing ball, and playing tetherball. She LOVES being chased with a toy in her mouth, by dogs or by people. She is protective of her peeps and her territory (the house, yard and car). She is incredibly exuberant when you come home and loves to lick you. No dog is perfect and Cali is no exception. Her protective nature can get the best of her. Once she becomes used to a place (3-6 months), she believes it is her job to protect it from visitors and other dogs. Once she becomes used to someone - usually because they work with her by feeding her and walking her - they are welcomed into the pack. A home with constant coming and going of people for rehearsal is not for her. She gets along well with other dogs on neutral territory and on their turf. She doesn't like them inside her home, although she has friends she doesn't mind hanging with in her yard. She is SUPER SMART! She learns things quickly. With that smartness comes a bit of wllfulness and mischievousness - but that happens when she is bored. When she is bored, she plays games to alleviate that boredom - such as learning how to open trash cans and spilling the contents on the kitchen floor. Or opening the tall cabinet and removing key food items: loaves of bread, a bag of flour, a box of rice. Sometimes she eats these, other times, she just moves them to other areas so that you know she was there. Cali needs a real job. She needs space to be active. She needs to be mentally challenged. She wants nothing more than to please and can be such a very loving dog. She needs an assertive pack, as she is most at ease when there is structure. We are looking for the right person or persons and the right environment for her (Less)

This darling girl is Bella. She is a spayed 4 year old Australian Cattledog who is looking for a great home. Bella is about 35 pounds and wears her fabulous cattledog tail with style. Currently Bella lives outside most of the time. However, she is ready to join you in the house and be your best pal. She is house trained already. True to her breed, Bella is a smart girl. She knows many commands: sit, down, stay, off, no, go ahead, and drop it. If you ask, she will even give you a High Five! Bella isn't so sure of little kids but she does love someone who will play a rousing game of fetch with her. Fetch is her favorite activity in the ... (Read More)whole, wide world. Currently Bella pulls a bit on leash. Perhaps that is because she is looking for an active home that will help her burn off some of that cattledog energy. An obedience refresher will help her a lot, too. She loves to learn and is ready to be a best pal. Bella is generally good with other dogs. She has been polite at the dog beach, though she does like a proper introduction as is typical of the breed. As for cats, she was mildly interested when she saw one as a puppy but hasn't had a chance to make any cat friendships since. Bella is ready to meet potential adopters in Southern CA. She currently lives in Orange County. Adopters north of Santa Barbara will be happily referred to our more northern rescue partners. A home visit and vet reference are required. (Less)

The more you tell her, the more she learns. Currently Whinnie lives with four other Cattledogs and a few cats. She is good with dogs her size and larger. She is a bit shy at first, but warms up to her pals after just a little while. After she has made friends, she will play a little bit one-on-one. ... While she is a home body, she will politely accompany her person on a trip as needed. She is also a polite girl in the house, already potty trained and crate trained.     Say 'hi' to Ted... quietly, he's nervous! Ted came here with his sister/mother, who knows, Tessa from the small Orange Cove Shelter. Sometimes you wish you knew a dog's story. How could they be SO messed up?! Ted is one of those dogs. He's fearful and under socialized. Been working with him, and experience has proven that they are all reachable. The kind of progress I'm grateful for, he sniffs other dogs, comes in to sleep on a dog bed of his own volition, housebroken, not terrified of me anymore, eats grass on walks... walks on a leash. I can touch him... I'm tellin' ya, it's the little things that are enormous with some of these guys! ... (Read More) Ted needs a special adopter, one who might understand what Ted is going through. He could just be left alone to exist, but I would love to see him with someone that would touch him every day, take him on walks, expose him to things. This is when I've seen the most improvements. Exposure to everything! Immersion. Was a huge deal to even force him to sleep in a dog bed next to me! Once he did for a few days, he expected it! Routine is key! Dogs are incredible, you can reach them through routine. Still working and he has all the time he needs...     COURTESY POST: Miles is a happy pit-bull terrier and Queensland Heeler mix about 5 years old. He is healthy, with no medical issues except he is overweight and could stand to lose a few. He is extremely friendly to men and women, but would do best in a home without young children, as he gets nervous around younger ones who pull his tail, etc. Older children would be fine. He has loves to chase moving things such as cars, running horses, swings, runners, running cats, so would only do well in a home with cats that are used to dogs and would not run from him. Given a proper introduction Miles loves to play with other dogs. However, he will not ... (Read More)share his resources like bones, food, or tennis balls with another dog. He is an extreme ball dog and water dog (LOVES the water!). He rides well in the car or truck. He is fantastic in the house (housebroken, no separation anxiety, non-destructive). Recalls verbally on and off leash under any circumstance. Pulls on a leash with a normal collar, but cruise control on a pinch collar. He is OK with horses, but would chase them if they ran. He exhibits the traits of a Heeler more than the other things he is mixed with, especially the nipping, chasing thing. Currently living outside in a 10 x 10 ft kennel, but typically has the full run of the entire property during the day. During cold or stormy nights, he sleeps inside the house. If you are interested in meeting Miles contact his current foster at sunchaser2213@aol.com (Less)

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Draco has been with us for about 3 months. He came from the shelter and was a bit of a handful but settled in quickly to his new kennel. He has been attending the Sunday Emily Fraser-Thomson classes and he's been doing pretty well, he still has lessons to learn but he's a real smart boy. He does real well with other dogs as long as they also want to run and play. He has been told no by a few dogs and he has listened... Draco is a good boy and is ready to move into a foster or adoptive home. He is playful, friendly and affectionate and is an active dog. He will do best in a home that is the same. Such a good boy.

Australian Cattle Dog Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults

Deuce is a friendly 10 year old bull terrier mix. He weighs only 45 pounds and is perfectly healthy.. Deuce is a sweetheart who loves people. He's very loving, devoted, and eager to please! He's completely house trained, knows how to use he doggie door, and walks nicely on a leash. He's neutered, current on vaccinations and microchipped. His family has moved, and can no longer keep him. We didn't want Deuce to end up in the shelter, so we said we would find him a new home. We're boarding Deuce at the vets office until we can find a foster or permanent home. He'd love a home with a yard to run and play! Deuce is a big happy goofball that ... (Read More)would make a great addition to the right home! He loves to play with his toys, or have you throw the ball for him. Deuce would be best as an only dog. Sadly, Deuce had a very rough start in life. When he was just a puppy, some cruel person kicked him in the head, and then dumped him at a high kill shelter. Deuce has an adorable tilt to his head because of that injury, and specialists say there's nothing that can be done. Deuce really deserves a wonderful family of his own! He'll repay you with lots of love and devotion! If you'd like to meet Deuce, please call 310-283-8947 or complete our online adoption application found on dexterfoundation.com If you can't adopt Deuce, can you at least foster him temporarily? Living in a cage at the vet's office is not a good place to be :( We're only adopting out to the Southern California area. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting an Australian Cattle Dog in California
Australian Cattle Dogs can make good pets in California if they match your IifestyIe. The Australian Cattle Dog is one of the most intelligent dog breeds, needing a lot of attention to stave off boredom. A neglected Australian Cattle Dog can become destructive. Australian Cattle Dogs have strong herding instincts and behave best when they have plenty of space and a job to do. Australian Cattle Dogs are well suited to farms and homes with large yards; they do not do well confined to an apartment or other small space. Australian Cattle Dogs are loyal and very obedient with attentive training. An Australian Cattle Dog tends not to do well with children unless it has known them since it was a puppy. Australian Cattle Dog
lnteresting Australian Cattle Dog Trivia Low-Cost California Spay & Neuter Clinics
Australian Cattle Dogs were bred by 19th century Australian pioneers to herd cattle on large ranches. Most Australian Cattle Dogs have a star-shaped marking on their foreheads called the Bentley Mark, after dog owner Thomas Bentley, whose purebred dog supposedly passed this mark on to all genuine Australian Cattle Dogs. Australian Cattle Dogs are descended from several different breeds, including Dalmatians and Smithfield Collies, which are now thought to be extinct.
